I am at a great loss here. If the EBV tier is not the source of the symptoms, then what is? Something must cause these virus-like symptoms in an up and down pattern. If it is such a weak virus, why does it cause such debilitating symptoms. Dr. Stoll would you please explain this to me?

Hi Pat
I don't understand either and I have searched and read every post on EBV here and still don't understand. I think when I was told I had EBV I felt "great" at last I know what is causing my symptoms and I can relax now but when I came here Iall I keep reading is that it isn't the virus that is causing my symptoms but something else. Now I feel back at square one again and stressed as I am unsure about what I have.
Am I being really thick!!!!!! I am so sorry

Pat,
This is an exerpt from Chapter 7 of my book.
You see a stagnant pond of water swarming with mosquitoes. Did the mosquitoes cause the pond to stagnate or were the mosquitoes drawn to the static water? This is not a trick question. "It’s obvious" you say "it’s the latter. Mosquitoes can’t cause water to stagnate" you say and you are right.
We know that while mosquitoes are everywhere they need water to lay their eggs. Are the mosquitoes actually lured from distant places (with the stagnant pond acting as a mosquito magnet) or are we simply witnessing the fact that the few mosquitoes that happened to be in close proximity to the pond are much more successful breeding there?
The same questions need to be addressed concerning the relationship between opportunistic micro-organisms and human disease. Are these micro-organisms the true source of disease or does their presence (in large numbers) really signal that the tissues were already somehow ‘stagnant’? Remember this is the same question that was so hotly debated by Louis Pasteur and his peers. The ‘stagnant water’ of their discussions was the ‘terrain’ of the body.
This question has been totally neglected if not completely forgotten. Researchers routinely build the framework for studies without giving any consideration to the status of the immunity (or ‘terrain’) of their patients.
Dr. Walt Stoll gives a simple yet comprehensive perspective into the importance of immunity in his book SAVING YOURSELF FROM THE DISEASE CARE CRISIS. In it he describes a study where a large number of laboratory rats were injected with rabies virus. The great majority of the rats quickly became rabid and died. There was a surprise however. Some of the rats survived, seemingly unaffected, remaining in good health long after the other animals had perished.
The health of the animals prior to the experiment seemed to be the same. Researchers assumed that if there where differences in immunity they would be insignificant. They were not. Small variations in immunity proved so critical that it literally meant the difference between life and death. For the living animals the key variable was not the injection of rabies virus but rather the high hurdle created by the status of their immunity. It was the key variable for the dead animals as well.
Months later the surviving rats were exposed to a variety of stressors (loud noises, temperature extremes, starvation, etc.). They soon succumbed to rabies and died. It was apparent that the surviving rats possessed a greater reserve of immunity (to deal with the rabies virus) than the other rats. It was equally evident that once these reserves were exhausted (by stress) the rabies virus was no longer innocuous but instead deadly.
Mononucleosis (commonly referred to as mono or ‘kissing disease’) is associated with the presence of EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus). Unlike rabies, EBV is a very weak virus. It has little chance of creating problems unless the immune function of the host is fairly low. Since it is a virus, and no drugs are effective in killing viruses, doctors really have no pharmaceutical weapons to offer. They must rely completely on the natural immunity of the patient to rein the virus back under control. They give a deceptively simple prescription – complete bed rest until symptoms resolve (usually about 6 weeks).
By avoiding stress through bed rest patients can usually increase their immunological reserves enough to push Epstein-Barr virus back into dormancy. However once this virus is contracted the host will continue to carry it for the rest of their life. If immunity drops sufficiently in the future this virus can multiply rapidly and become active.
In effect a person with Epstein-Barr virus will never be completely ‘cured’ since the virus cannot be entirely eradicated. This does not mean that the patient cannot become asymptomatic (without any symptoms) of mononucleosis. Most do. In fact if they maintain sufficiently high immunity

I need you to proof read and make suggestions for my new edition of MY book due to come out next year. I need to incorporate some of your clarity of explanations.

Dear Steph,
I don't think this poor understanding has anything to do with your being "thick". I think it is a function of my trying to do too much with too little. So many people have been trying to learn how to look at EBV in a more comprehensive way that I have tried to explain it by doing all the work myself. That is NOT possible for a concept so different than conventional medicine (used to dealing with simple concepts) has sold to the unsuspecting public.
Many people criticize me for recommending my book when the only time I do so is because it takes more understanding than I can present in any reasonable time here on the BB. They are so used to being exploited that they do not understand when someone truly is donating their time to help.
Robert MeFerran posted a wonderful note 4/20/98, about this, that just might straighten out your thinking without doing the only thing I know to help you----perhaps what I should recommend to everyone wanting to understand this concept so as to not have so many people frustrated--: Read a copy of my book (link below) AND then, if you want to understand it at a deeper level, read a copy of "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier.
THEN, if you have more questions, write again. As you get well, share your experiences with the BB participants. SOME, people will just do what you did without needing to understand it. I, personally, think it is better to understand but I do not care how I care that people get well.
THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT LEARNING & DOING WILL ALWAYS RESOLVE THIS CONDITION. The only problem is geteting the person to learn enough about it that they will DO it.
I responded to several others with similar confusions today. You migth get more information by reading them too.

Dr. Louis Pasteur become famous for his work in developing what today is termed the germ theory. As you might know, prior to Pasteur’s discovery doctors did not wash their hands before performing such tasks as surgery or the delivery of babies. Infections seemed an unpredictably fickle part of doing these procedures, probably brought on by demons and devils. Aided by the invention of the microscope, Pasteur was able to see a world teeming with micro-organisms and make the key connection to infectious disease.
Since Pasteur’s discovery medical science has focused the great majority of it’s energies in defining the vast array of microscopic organisms that interact with humans. Once these ‘bugs’ were isolated attention turned to creating antibiotic pharmaceuticals to help rid us of these invaders. The quest has continued to this day and unfortunately, in the process, dwarfed the badly needed research to understand the flip side of the coin.
The synthesis of these vaccines and antibiotics has undoubtedly been of major importance. However the overwhelming focus of exclusively treating the micro-organism has led to an out of balance view of our world.
The adaptive or natural resistance of the animal (or host) were considered static and unchanging (or at least unchangeable). Laboratory research was much easier if medicine could make the (false) assumption that the immunological status of the animal was constant (a perfect control) while testing the effectiveness of various antibiotic drugs. For all intensive purposes, medical research neglected what was at least half of the picture.
If the importance of the natural resistance of the host (in this case human beings) hasn’t occurred to you yet you’ve probably fallen into the same trap as most of our modern medical practitioners. It’s the erroneous belief that we can defend ourselves from any infectious invader, if we just have the right antibiotic.
You will find your physician can talk at length about any type of microbe and the proper antibiotic to treat it. Odds are excellent that if a patient has a malady their doctor ‘will have a pill for it’. But, if you ask what you can do to help boost your innate immunity, a deathly silence will follow. Physicians have next to no training in this matter and their patients have suffered for it. Pasteur, who devoted his entire life to understanding germs, admitted late in life that he had only ‘worked one side of the street’.
Let me point out that Pasteur was the first to declare that disease was caused by microscopic germs. Being the first he was sharply criticized by many of his enemies for failing to recognize the importance of the 'terrain' (the soil in which disease develops). They accused him of being too one-sidedly preoccupied with the apparent cause of disease: the microbe itself. There were, in fact, many debates about this between Pasteur and his great contemporary, Claude Bernard.
The former insisted on the importance of the disease-producer, the latter on that of the body's own resistance and equilibrium. Yet Pasteur's work on immunity and what was induced by applying serums and vaccines showed that he did recognize the importance of the soil (the immunological abilities of the host). Pasteur attached so much importance to this point that on his deathbed he said to Professor A. Re’non who caring for him:
"Bernard avait raison. Le germe n'est rien, c'est le terrain qui est tout." ("Bernard was right. The microbe is nothing, the soil is everything.")
As age draws us closer to a natural death, it becomes obvious that our natural immunological resistance is ‘everything’. It is the true warrior and it has been all along. Antibiotics, vaccines and the like certainly have their place, but best used only to fill in the gaps.
The next time you visit the physician that diagnosed your EBV you might want to ask him the following questions. The quality of the answers will give you some insight into the probability of you

You've sure got that right! Dead silence when you ask them anything about nutrition. My endocrinologist (ex) couldn't even tell me what foods might cause inflamation. When I mentioned night shades, he didn't know what I was talking about. It makes me wonder if they ever read anything new, other than drug propaganda. I so often feel inadequate to understand the technical and scientific aspects of much of the material I've been reading to try to understand how my body works. If I had their background and techical understanding, I'd really have a handle on so much more. What a waste of good minds. The very ones who have it in their power to help us, won't. Very discouraging! At least much of my 'brain fog' has dissappeared with the little bit that I do grasp about diet and nutrition. Tha's a blessing!

Nancy,
The pendulum IS swinging but unfortunately it's swinging toward too many alternative/holistic wannabees that talk the talk but can't walk the walk.
What I am talking about here is that too many of the non-allopathic physicians still look to herbal, homeopathic and other remedies without first asking the question "Why did this patient become sick in the first place?"
The result is the same that we have seen with allopathic medicine -- patients that come back to be given more and different herbal/homeopathic or dietary supplement recommendations. After a few months of getting marginal results they end up looking for another doc -- and so it goes.
Dr. Stoll and I both believe that the financial weight of the Disease Care Crisis will ultimately cause the collapse of our current system. Unfortunately I don't see any other existing paradigm that will deliver the results that we will need.
Hope I don't sound too pessimistic. I just think that while the changes to the system might be revolutionary, the needed changes in the mind of patients will be evolutionary......

Dear Janet,
Get the biopsy.
However, the odds are that your nodes are enlarging only because you have been operating so close to the reserves of your immunity that regular sized nodes couldn't do the job anymore. In that case the biopsy will show just "reactive hyperplasia". Pray that this is so since at this stage, things are a lot easier to reverse.
Even if this best case scenario is what is going on, you MUST get busy improving your general immunity! Hodgkins, lymphoma, lymphatic leukemia (the 3 most common critically dangerous things that could cause this--
ruling these out is the reason for the biopsy) are just much later stages of this same process.
There are many resources in my book (link on this page) about what is known about how an individual CAN improve his/her immunity. A simple wellness program (on the homepage of this 'site) would be a powerful place to start. However, at the stage you are describing, you really need to become an expert in this right away.
Write if you have more questions.

I am 43 years old and have EBV. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with "mono" and recovered very slowly. I regained only about 75% of my energy. I still have symptoms of tiredness and slight nausea. I cannot seem to rebuild my muscle. I was a runner (15 miles a week) prior to mono, but now cannot continue. When I try to run, it knocks me back down....causing severe fatigue and rubber legs. Do you feel my persistance with excercise is causing a slow recovery? Any advise would be helpful.
Thanks....Diana

Dear Jessica,
Have you been watching the national news this week? Forty years after I began preaching this to my patients, they finally are getting it out to the public: ANTIBIOTICS DO NOTHING AGAINST VIRUSES! However, they DO destroy the normal bacteria in the gut (which are one of our most potent immunological defences). If anything, antibiotics delay resolution of viral conditions. WHY are you on antibiotics?
Also, anti-inflammatories increase leaky gut syndrome, a much more likely cause of your symptoms than the EBV.
I would suggest you start by using the search feature provided with this BB & read everything you can find about EBV & Chronic Epstein Barr Virus.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.
YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE NOT BEING CAUSED BY THE VIRUS. They are being caused by what is causing your suscepibility to the virus. Just because your blood titer for EBV is up does not mean that the EBV is causing your symptoms--it is NOT. Ten to fifteen years form now, the medical profession will look back on this diagnosis with embarassment. It is a FAD diagnosis offered by physicians with only superficial understanding of the process (if that).

Both the EBV AND the CFS are FAD diagnoses that will no longer be used in a few years when finally physicians catch on to what is really causing the symptoms. They both are caused by the same basic mechanisms. If you do not hear the "message" your body mind is sending this time, it will have to shout louder.

Dear Diana,
The FIRST time you have EBV (mono) you can have symptoms from it. However, NEVER thereafter. When you have a high current titer of EBV in your blood, AND have symptoms, your symptoms are due to tthe causes for your susceptibility to the virus and NOT to the virus. When those causes are dealt with, the titer will still be up but the symptoms will be gone. HOW DO THESE INTENTIONALLY IGNORANT PHYSICIANS EXPLAIN THAT?
Ten to fifteen years from now, no one will diagnose Chronic EBV. Right now, it is a FAD diagnosis that serves no purpose except to put a name on how the person feels so as to get them out of the office.
Use the search feature provided with this BB & read everything you can find aobut EBV & Chronic Epstein Barr Virus. THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Dr. Stoll, I may have misled you by saying I was diagnosed with EBV. My physician did blood work when I went back to him and told him I am not recovering fully from the "MONO". He then told me that the only thing that shows is the EBV but could not find anything else wrong. He is now referring me to an Infectious Disease Dr with the advise "if anything can be done, he can do it". I have a positive attitude and insist I will overcome this. Dear Ron,
It is not a coincidence that you do not mention the most important single thing you could be doing: the regular practice of an effective skilled relaxation technique. A common observation, by holostic medical practitioners, has been that the most important thing for anyone to do is nearly always the very last thing that they are willing to do.
There are 3 things that make up ANY basic wellness program (which is the most important thing anyone can do to prevent & reverse any chronic condition). They are: diet, exercise and skilled relaxation. If one is worth 3 points of benefit, two are worth 9 points and three are worth 27 points. Each approach magnifies the effects of any other approach.
This has been carefully described on this BB many times & my book goes into greater depth as well (link below). Use the search feature for this BB & read everything you can find about EBV. Go to the homepage (link on this page) & read anything that has to do with wellness, stress and relaxation.

I wish I could be so confident about the ability of the "infectious disease doc". The vast majority of these docs hew tightly to the allopathic paradigm. If s/he can find another organism "infecting" you he may be able to help you. However, he likely will not be sophisticated enough to look behind your present symptoms as to WHY you are "not recovering from the mono as you should". THAT is where you need to be focusing your efforts---not on finding another disease to treat.
My book should at least give you a different way of looking at the WHY of your present condition.

YOU are going to have to learn something about this and it is going to take a significant amount of your energy to do so. There are MANY resources for you to do so, I would have to type several books for you here on the BB to save you from looking up the suggestions I have given everybody.
Learning about it is a LOT less effort than doing what needs to be done to resolve it. Until you are williig to put even that much effort into it, you shouldn't bother since you would never do the work needed to reverse it.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
I apologize for referring to you by your first name in my previous message, but I am completely new to this site, and knew not whom I was addressing. Please excuse my ignorance - I did not mean to be disrespectful.
I followed your advice and read a great deal on this site about EBV/CFS. I think I now understand what you meant by your response to my question. It's interesting to note that most of the people who have written have experienced the same frustrations that I have. I have complained to the medical profession that I know my immune system is shot, and I wanted to know what I could do to improve it; thus, the tests.
I am experiencing the same fatigue as many of the others, along with fibromyalgia, anemia, and candidiasis. I have swelling on my neck near the thyroid,so thyroid testing was done, along with many other blood tests. I was told that my thyroid tests were "normal", but I tested positive for the EBV. I am also to have an ultrasound on my thyroid to determine the cause of the swelling. I take many supplements, but I don't think I am absorbing them. When I attempt to exercise, or when I climb a flight of steps, I get palpitations and my legs burn as though they are "on fire." I know that I am not getting enough rest due to the demands of my job and other responsibilities, although I have been making a conscious effort to improve this. I also experience swelling in my legs.
I was told by 2 doctors to "take a good multiple vitamin and rest." I am very much interested in ordering your book, as I know there has to be a better way to live. I have gained much more help and relief from a very understanding chiropractor who prefers a more natural approach to healing. I can't stand feeling the way I do because I have a new granddaughter and I want to enjoy her along with many other things. Any other insight would be very much appreciated. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share my frustrations.

Put your mind at ease. You must be psychic! The fact is that I ALWAYS refused to wear a white coat, encouraged ALL of my patients to call me Walt and never allowed a desk to become between me & the patient. There are already too many barriers between the doc & the person needing help to let these "forms" come between them. There are several large sections in my book to help people be better consumers of ANY kind of medical care.
At least the 2 docs who allowed themselves to say the word vitamins are far ahead of their colleagues who are still being taught that vitamins just make expensive urine. However, it would be illuminating for you to be a little fly on the wall while someone, knowledgable about what they said, tried to have a conversation about it. This is only the most simplistic level possible. WHAT IS A "GOOD" VITAMIN? WHAT IS THEIR DEFINITION OF "REST"?
You really DO need to read a copy of my book. THEN, if you have questions, at least you will know what to ask & MUCH better understand the answers.
EVERYTHING you have mentioned is caused by the same mechanisms. They ALL will clear up when those basic mechanisms are dealt with.

Dear Dr Stoll
I suffered a throat infection whilst holidaying in the Carribean. 3 months later I am still suffering not from a sore throat but from swollen neck glands, neck tenderness, fatique, depression at times and flu like symptoms that come and go.
Hey guess what after seeing over 6 different specialists finally one diagnosed me with Epstein barr. I had never even heard of it before but I am really confused
some say
1/ EBV is the same as glandular fever ( I was tested for glandular fever and it was negative but I was positive when tested for EBV - so how can they be the same disease? are they the same?
others say
2/ EBV sufferers are more likely to get burkitt's lymphoma or hodgkins (this freaks me out somewhat!) is this true?
the rest say
3/ EBV is the same as chronic fatigue syndrome/post viral. Is this true?
I am very confused doctor about this disease i know nothing about. I do smoke and drink quite a bit but mainly at weekends. i am 28, due to be married in Sept, live quite a racey lifestyle and have a baby daughter aged one. I have always been somewhat of a weight fanatic so don't eat as well as I should but I am not anorexic just not a big eater.
I am currently taking Echinacea and acidophillus pills and Vitamin C daily - oh and my aunt is also making me take royal jelly. Should I be popping so many different meds? I am and so is my family a bit all over the place re this strange disease.
I will read your book but could you answer my initial questions listed above and explain a little about what I am dealing with. Do I really have to change my diet and lifestyle now in order to get better?
Thank you. Sorry this is so long.Got so many questions I want to ask you though

Perhaps if your doc was honest enough to charge her patients a reasonable fee for telephone consultations, she would be more likely to return calls & not be so "inaccessible". Any doc that is inaccessible is not someone I would go to.
Surely, you have paid her enough that she should answer your reasonable request for a definition of "Diffuse Lymphadenopathy". All this is is a medical jargon saying that you have lymph nodes that are enlarged in many places in your body. You already KNEW that but by our making it seem technical by giving it a medical name.......
Again, I am betting that your biopsy report will come back as "reactive hyperplasia". All THIS means is that your lumph nodes are enlarging to make up for an immunlolgical short-fall.

Dear Dr.Stoll,
Hello, Dr.Stoll. My name is Attle. I study the environmental technology in Hong Kong Technology College.
In this week, I should prepare a presentation of microbiology. The topic is the 'Epstein Barr virus' which is caused the Nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In the presentation, I need some information about the topic such as the cause, process, formation, structure, effect and cure method.
Do.Stoll, would you mind helping me to solve my problems? I wish you giving me a responsible as soon as possible. Thank you very much.
I have done a search and read all posts and archives re Epstein-barr virus. Here is my story and why I am confused.
I am 28 yrs old and all my life have had very large tonsils. I have suffered several bouts of tonsilitis throughout my life which has always been easily cleared up from a 5 day course of penicillin or erithrymicin. Earlier this year I was holidaying abroad and caught a viral throat infection. It was a totally different kind of throat infection as I KNOW the difference between tonsilitis and what I suffered on this holiday. Because of my history of tonsilitis the doctor put me on a course of erithrymicin. It did nothing so he then put me on a stronger antibiotic and a larger dose. 10 days later my sore throat got better. BUT ever since this Viral throat infection I have never bounced back. I still have swollen neck glands, neck pain and nose congestion. I don't suffer from chronic fatigue as I don't feel all that tired or ill but simply have persistent swollen neck glands and neck pain. I had a blood test taken and it showed negative for glandular fever. I had an epstein barr blood test done and it showed positive (weakly positive whatever that means). So I am told by my doc I have epstein barr virus. My glands are not painful except at the base of my neck sometimes but very much swollen. 3 months have gone by and I have been taking vitamin C, Echinacea, acidophillus and Garlic and Royal Jelly. I have been trying to relax more, taken up swimming and vistiting a steam room 3 times a week. I feel better on and off but all my glands are still swollen and are bothering me because I keep touching and feeling them -
Since I was told I had EBV (a disease I had never heard of before) I have also been told it can trigger off cancer especially Lymphatic cancer. So I now worry I have lymph cancer. Surprise surprise.
I hear what you say loud and clear that this disease does not exist so what I understand is the throat infection knocked me for six and the 2 courses of antibiotics knocked my immune system even more and now I am in poor health when before I was absolutely fine.
So therefore did this huge dose of antibiotics cause the onset of symptoms?
Can you also explain what elevation of titers mean? Could I not have EBV and my titers be raised because the original viral throat infection is still in my system? Or do I have to face the fact that the viral throat infection has given me EBV and now in order to get well I must change my lifestyle or remain sick. I don't seem to suffer nearly as much as the majority of EBV sufferers who post here and also not many mention that swollen glands are apart of their symptoms.
Have I been misdiagnosed maybe to shut me up or can EBV cause both mild and horrific symptoms. This is where I am confused. I would like to get your book if I accept I have this problem but I live in the UK. Sorry this is so long but I did not get all the answers I am looking for by searching your site.
Thankyou and I am fascinated by your opinions and knowledge and am keen to learn and educate myself.

Dear Attle,
The questions you have asked are ones that would be best answered in your medical school library.
However, the questions that you should be asking are the opns that Louis Pasteur finally came to grips with on his death bed. He finally realized that the organisms he had spent his entire life studying as causes of disease were MUCH less important than the natural resistance of the organism (human being) to the infesting organism.
That IS the solution to this problem as well. NO ONE with a healthy immune system can "get" EBV. In MY experience, NONE of the symptoms currently ascribed to EBV are due to the virus but are due to the REASONS the person has an elevated blood titer of EBV. !0-15 years from now, NO responsible clinician will make this spurrious diagnosis any more.
If you want to make your instructors sit up & take notice, use the search feature for this BB & read everything you can find about EBV & Chronic Epstein Barr Virus.
Follow up on the references & you will get at least the thoughtful instructors to pay attention. You have a better chance in Hong Kong because you are closer to traditional medicine than we poor people trapped in the narrow thinking of the conventional medical monopoly here in the USA.

Dr. Stoll - I saw the oncologist today. He took a history, reviewed my previous tests and examined me. He could not find a single swollen lymph node and therefore said he didn't have anything that needed to be biopsied. He said that he didn't see anything that looked suspicious to him, but............to be on the safe side, he ordered more blood work to be done and a CT Scan of my chest and abdomen just to make absolutely sure, he wasn't missing anything.
What do you think of this?
Thanks,
Janet
I was just diagnosed with epstein bar virus, but when I asked my dr. what to do about it, she said treat the symptoms.
Next to feeling sometimes exhausted and most of the time tired. I always have incredible joint pains, and suffer depression
on the real bad days. I ran a low grade fever 101 for about 2 months and now on occassion still have either a 96 temp or above
100. What is going on. I'm taking Naprosin for the joint pain but it has little or no effect.
Do you have any idea or suggestions of what to do.
Thank you
Hi
Thanks for your reply below. Since then I have read up everything in the archived section about it here. i still have a question and hope you can explain or put my mind at rest. Ivisited the online Merck manual and read that EBV is closely associated to 2 cancers nasopharangeal and Burkitts lymphoma. Does this mean if one suffers from EBV they are at risk from getting cancer? It also says EBV causes mono which I knew already. so EBV causes both mono and cancer as far as I have learnt.
This REALLY worries me having been diagnosed with EBV. yes I am going to change my lifestyle and read your book. I intend to call you and pay by CC so you can direct it too England for me.
Thank you once again Doctor
BTW the doctors here have failed to mention the cancer connection to EBV to me. Is that because they don't want me to worry or because the chances are so slim of developing cancer they didn't think it was worth discussing.?

Dear Stephanie,
Sorry you are still confused.
Briefly--------------mainly because this is the third note I have tried to send you today. Our ISP is having trouble & after I got your long note ready to send--the last 2 times--I was cut off & the note was entirely lost. I just tried again to do some of the other notes & succeeded so I am going to try you again. As you might think, I am gun-shy now so I will try to keep this short.
Once you get my book, you will have a lot better appreciation of what we have been dicsussing in the archives on this BB. Also, in the back of my book is a reference to a book that would lead you through this at a deeper level. It was written about you & you will recognize yourself in it: "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier. I am sure that it is available in your bookstores.
I am NOT saying that this condition does not exist. As a matter of fact, your initial infection was typical of EBV in its role as the cause of mononucleosis. What I DO say is that your symptoms are NOT due to the virus any more. They are due to the causes behind the virus.
Only making wellness be a serious hobby will you be able to put this part of your life behind you. The exact protocols & references are also in the back of my book.
International purchases are a little more complex since my (800) number doesn't cross international borders. You will have to call me at home (850) 747-8669 and I will have to handle the order myself. If you get my answering service it means I am on the computer or away from the house or busy on another line. Leave your shipping address, phone number & email address (in case I have trouble with the order) and your Visa, MasterCard or Discover # (be sure to include the expiration date). This is most convenient since credit cards DO cross international borders AND take care of the exchange rate.
I need to charge $2 extra for S&H for international shipping. The domestic charge for one copy is $9.95 +$3.05 S&H. This is standard book rate which can take 2 months for delivery. The only other way our Post Office ships stuff is air mail and that costs $5 extra.
WOW! It looks like I got the essentials on without being kicked off. I better send it before I lose this one too.

The reason your doc says the only thing you can do is "treat the symptoms" is that the allopathic paradigm has no concept for looking at the causes.
This FAD diagnosis is totally unnecessary. NONE of these symptoms are due to the EBV. Conventional physicians should be ashamed of themselves for such intentional ignorance

Dear Imogen,
ANYONE who maintains a high EBV titer in the blood does so BECAUSE their immunity is struggling. People with a borderline immune system tend to get cancer and the kind of cancers they would tend to get are those that have been noticed to be more common with an EBV diagnosis. BIG SURPRIZE! I can hardly stand supposedly educated professionals making their living thinking with such a simplistic paradigm.
I wouldn't worry about the cancer connection since, if you learn how to improve your immune system you will no longer have the EBV either. Your docs are probably trying to save explanation time by off-putting mentioning it to you. Just think how many questions you would have if they DID mention it. They would be late to seeing their next patient.
It is charitable for you to assume that they are trying to spare your feelings even though that might be the reason they give themselves and probably DOES enter into the equation. HOWEVER, I think the patient deserves to know ALL the facts since they are the ones who have to live it.
The best time to try to catch me at home is from noon to 5 PM Central Daylight Time. I have no idea how that translateds to your time.
I am looking forward to your return to health & wellness.

While you are waiting for Dr. Stoll to answer, click on "Ask Dr. Stoll" above and read what you can on the bulletin board about EBV. Also, click on the "search" button that is on the bulletin board and put "bulletin board archives" into the search engine you find there. Everything said on the board about your problem is stored there.
Hope this is helpful,

Dear Dot,
I have shipped many of my books to people in Australia.
The first thing for you to tell your friend is that the virus is NOT the cause of ANY of her symptoms. The causes of her EBV titer are the causes of her symptoms. Of course, this will just confuse her since we all would like to believe that our doctors would have explained that to us long before 10 years had gone by.
First, I would suggest she use the search feature for this BB & read everything she can find about EBV and Chronic Epstein Barr Virus. If she has no internet connection, you could copy it & send it to her via snail-mail or by email.
Once she has read all that, she at least would have been exposed to WHY she has been feeling the way she does. She will rrecognize the truth of this from her own experiences. THEN, if she is interested in understanding this in depth, she should read one of the books I reference in the back of my book: "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier.
I would be happy to answer her questions once she has at least that much information under her belt. This is a FAD diagnosis and her symptoms are totally unnecessary.

I came to this site to learn about the symptoms of EBV which I have recently been diagnosed with. Apart from swollen glands in my neck and jaw regions my symptoms seem very mild in comparison to others. Since being diagnosed with EBV I am taking echinacea to boost my immune system. I seem to have nasal congestion and generally feeling stuffed up which has been going on for months. I also some days feel like I am about to get a sore throat and when I look it's red with the odd tiny ulcer but I go to bed early and the next day fewel fine. this happens every week or so - so are these symptoms of EBV feeling like you are about to come down with something weekly and a stuffy nose. Because I have been diagnosed 3/4 months ago with EBV I don't bother going to the docs anymore when I feel under the weather but my Dad is concerned that I have had nasal congestion and quite big swollen jaw glands for the last 2 months at least. I tell him it's just symptoms of EBV but he is not convinced. Should I make an appointment to see the doc (who I know will jsut send me away once he knows i am EBV positive)? The trouble is how much can one put down to EBV and how do we know if it might now be something more serious?
I have read your archived message by doing a search but there is little re symptoms of EBV. I would like to read a list of all possible EBV symptoms as I cannot even find a book that does this
Thankyou Dr Stoll
Hello Walt Stoll
I have this "totally unecessary condition" which you refer to as EBV. I was told I contracted this virus in the tropics - If this is an unecessary conditon how come it knocks one for six. Now I was/am a healthy person always have been - I don't smoke am of standard weight work out, eat well and am not a very stressed person just willful being a Leo! I have never allowed this virus to wear me down so I live with mild symptoms and accept it. I am still a happy person but a happy person who has accepted that he does not feel 100%. that will teach me to go travelling in the tropics where one is at risk of catching all sorts of things. Anyway I still socialise and get on with my life and half my friends don't know I suffer from a virus as I don't talk about it - I listen to my body and when it says I am tired I relax and have an early night.
I couldn't be more healthy or more relaxed BUT I have to aknowledge that I have a virus in me that I caught which was extremely bad luck and life goes on. It is not fair for you to say only an unhealthy person gets EBV this totally unnecessary condition. that does not make sense. IT IS A CONDITION, a condition I live with and accept` I don't feel terrible all the time at all but am aware that I am not 100% like I used to be but I still make sure I lead the same healthy lifestyle except maybe taking more vitamin supplements than I used to,
Sure if I smoked 100 cigarettes a day and ate unhealthily and took little exercise and had a stressful job then fine I could understand you preaching change your lifestyle and learn to relax and this totally unecessary condition will go. BUT sorry up until I contracted this TOTALLY UNECESSARY CONDITION I was as fit as a fiddle.
Therefore I don't understand what you are going on about at all

Taking Vitamin C to bowel tolerance is one very important thing you can do, as well as garlic and acidophilis for controlling Candida. I.V Hydrogen Peroxide works well as well. Don't EVER give up until you find a doctor who will help you. Start by a Net Search for ACAM. GOOD LUCK!

I hope you understood from all those posts you read that your symptoms are NOT due to the EBV but due to the causes of your elevated titer. When you get rid of the causes, your symptoms will go away and about 6 months later the titer will start going down.
I hope you will use the references mentioned so many times in the posts you read so you will learn WHY you have this & how to start reversing the causes.
As you get well, please share your experiences with us here on this BB. The notes today (4/20/98) make it clear to me that there are still a lot of confused people out there.

Dear Tom,
I hope you are as indignant as you sound. Perhaps it will give you the energy it will take to correct many of your poorly understood conceptions.
NO PERFECTLY HEALTHY PERSON CAN "CATCH" EBV. Even Pasteur said as much on his deathbed.
I am not going to try to "educate" you about WHY you are in the fix you are in. Only YOU can do that. What I CAN do is offer you sufficient resources to educate youself. You have a long way to go. If you are so smart, why are you sick? Perhaps the incentive of how you feel will get you to expend the energy it will take. Who knows?
First, there is a book written about you that you would enjoy having on your shelves if only to brag to your friends that "this book was written about me". Read the most recent edition of "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Ken Pelletier, PhD. THEN, if you understand your condition well enough to be ready to do something about this "unnecessary condition" you would profit by reading my book (link below).
As you get well, you could help a lot of other "skeptics" get better too by sharing your experiences. Your alternative to the above is to live the rest of your life as you feel now; only there will be other things break down from the very causes you have not dealt with so you feel about as good now as you ever will.
I am not here to make you like me.

Thanks, Laura.
You can even get MORE benefits from your vitamin C (with less dosage) by using ESTERIFIED vitamin C. This patented form of vitamin C is more expensive but is at least 4 times as effective per dose. SO, if it doesn't cost more than 4 times as much, you would be saving money with the ESTERIFIED.
Also, if you use bowel tolerance as a criterion for dosage, you will be able to take twice as much of the esterified when you only need about 1/4 as much.
I hope this is making sense to you. If you have questions please write.

Dear Dr. Stoll:
I have been seeing a neurologist in Boston for some time and was diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy. I told him on my last visit of 3/2 that I have burning throughut my whole body. He suggested that symptom I described is a virus of some sort so the next day I had an appt. with my oncologist and he did some blood tests. You see in l996 I had non-hodgkins lymphoma and was treated with CHOP chemo. All is well with that now. I have had 3 other types of cancer over the past 22 years.
To make a long story short I just received a call from the secretary to the oncologist who said the doctor said blood tests showed PAST traces of Mono or Epstein Barr but all seems OK now.
Do you know if this could be because of the recent lymphoma and why I am experiencing this burning and lack of the energy I used to have. After going into remission I was able to return to work for about 10 months. During that time this cervical radiculopathy thing came up and took over my life. I have chronic pain in my left shoulder, burning down my left leg and as of recent weeks burning in my whole body.
I guess my question is: was the mono or epstein-barr virus caused by the non hodgkins lymphoma or could it have some kind of connection?
Thank you for listening.
I was diagnosed with this today. Can someone please explain to me what it's all about? My Dr. has me on Famvir and a bunch of vitamins, as well as a daily exercise routine. Has anyone here taken Famvir? If so, how's it working for you?

Naomi,
Yes, my response to Tom was a harsh one. It was not a hurried reply. I thought long and hard to be sure that I wrote what I meant, and I meant what I wrote. He seems resigned to stay stuck where he is. Yes, I am being judgmental and arrogant. What’s your point? If you call me a name my opinion is invalid? It was, after all, only my view.
Tom is a big boy. He can take it. He probably thinks I'm something else, but I doubt he thinks I’m cruel.
You know, your doctor may be right, luck may have had a hand in contracting EBV. Many of us were UNLUCKY in that we didn’t know we were compromising our immune systems. I don't think the message is that it is "nobody's fault but your own" for contracting EBV, but rather, nobody's fault but your own if you think you have to continue suffering the symptoms. Why do you think it is cruel to say that? It seems to me that Dr. Stoll is saying that what caused you to be susceptible to the virus in the first place is what is causing your symptoms. Aren’t you curious wondering what that something might be?! Don’t you know you would have all the support in the world from Dr. Stoll and others here on the board if you chose to explore that question?
Of course, if you disagree with the advice, that’s another matter. Then what’s the point of writing negative notes and expecting sympathy? Hello?
Nobody doubts you feel victimized and lousy. It’s a bad situation, I know first hand. I also know sympathy is important, and I hope you have plenty in your life.
I hold the hope in my heart that you find the healing you seek.
God bless you.

In Reply to: Re: Question for Dr. Stoll posted by Connie Riethmiller on April 23, 1998 at 17:45:50:
Dear Connie,
Epstein Barr is the name of a virus that causes mononucleosis. Presently it is a FAD diagnosis to explain many symptoms people have that are caused by lifestyle things that have depressed their immunity so that the virus can become active again. The virus is NOT causing their symptoms; it is the causes behind the rising titer in the blood that are causing the symptoms.
A basic rule of medicine is that once anyone has had ANY viral infection that that virus remains dormant in that person's cells for the rest of their life. Only if the immunity decreases below the amount needed for that virus to escape its prison can the individual have any symptoms from it. See the link: Immunity & Stress. Post-Polio Syndrome is another perfect example.
Anyhow, use the search feature for this BB & read everything you can find about EBV and Chronic Epstein Barr Virus on this BB--along with the notes about this this week, THEN, if you still have more questions, write again.

There a have been many hundreds of entry level questions aboue EBV, and you need to learn what's been already been said. Then, for the nutrition, call (800) 870-5378 for a copy of "The Healing Power of Whole Foods" by Beth Loiselle, RD Another book that would not help so much but is still worthwhile: "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Balch & Balch. Most any healthfood bookstore and library would have a copy.
Once you have the above under your belt, if you still have questions, write again.
