Looking for tips on vitamins, etc., to combat the fatigue in Epstein-Bar.
My best friend has been diagnosed with Epstein Bar. She is 21 years old and is anemic. Her doctor told her that her bone marrow is no longer producing red blood cells. What does all this mean and what can she do about it? I have heard that this virus is a precurser to cancer, cronic fatigue syndrom, and other serious health problems. I am really worried about her and would like some information. Is this a terminal illness? Please help if you can.
I have a twelve year old daughter just diagnosed with Epstein Barr. she has a Sed rate of 98 we are told this is high. What bearing does this have on the disease or is this a sign of a future illness involved? We were told this is a sign of inflamation.

Dear Kari,
EBV is not the cause of her blood cell problem! As a matter of fact the EBV is not causing ANY of her symptoms. It is the cause of her elevated titer that is causing her symptoms. This FAD diagnosis will no longer be tolerated in a few years since it has nothing to do with the causes.
Use the archives feature for this BB & read everything you can find about EBV and Chronic Epstein Barr Virus. Also, there were a couple of excellent notes about this within the past few weeks, by Robert McFerran, that we are in the process of setting up a link for people wanting to know the information you are seeking. Archives only contain stuff through February.
This is a problem of less than robust immunity (All of the terrible diseases you list are ALSO caused by this mechanism. No wonder they are all related.). AIDS research has given us MANY ways to improve our own immunity. They are ALL things one can DO, not what one can TAKE.
Once you have the archives under your belt, if you still have questions, write again.

I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired and aching with excruciating pain all over all the time, nothing seams to help. A very close friend was diagnosed with EB 12 years ago.
Just over 3 years ago he learned that he cancer of the
testicle. He has been cancer free for nearly 3 years now.
He can sometimes go upto 18 months without EB episode.
These usually last from 3 to 6 months. During this time
he describes his symptoms as flu-like. He is extremely
anxious about his cancer recurring, and or some other
malady while his immune system is down. He told me that
the latest statistics are not encouraging. He is 40 years

I came upon this web site because I am searching for more information about epstein barr. I was told I have the virus seven years ago but no one has given me a defintion of the virus. I want to know what having this virus means in the long run, how did I get it and chould I give it to others.
I like this site because people are talking about their situatons and it is informative. However, I find one important aspect to be very distracting. The "expert" on the matter, Dr. Stoll, seems more concered about selling his book rather than providing helpful information. I do not doubt the quality of the Doctor's book and was very interested in reading. Unfortunately, after the manner the doctor took to try and sell his book I lost interest and question his qualability. Now I am back to square one, what is epstein barr?

Dear Sarah,
How was the diagnosis of "mono" made other than a blood test? Every physician knows that "mono" is caused by the epstein barr virus. Therefore, if the mono diagnosis is correct, the EBV blood test will have to be positive. Under those circumstances, your doc just wasted your money. If s/he is still trying to pin down the diagnosis of mono, the test would be helpful.
If you turn out to have mono, you would be wise to use the archives feature provided with this bb & read everything you can find about EBV and Chronic Epstein Barr Virus.
THEN, at least you will not be so helpless dealing with your doc. The reason docs make so much money is that it is their responsibilityt to answer questions like this for YOU. They are not just supposed to take your money & run. Many will do just that IF you let them. That should tell you that you are going to the wrong doc. You need one who will answer questions & not discourage you from asking them.
Be sure to read the references suggested many times in those archives. If you do not have EBV titers elevated, what IS your porblem? Let me know on the BB & I can probably point you in a profitable direction to help yourself.

Dear Annie,
I make no money selling my book. The only reason I wrote it was so people like you, who desperately need to understand what they have, could have an inexpensive (in time & money) way to learn what they need--along with the references they would need to become expert in thier condition AND find any professionals in their area who could help if they need it-----without my having to retype it for each person needing it..
If explaining the answer to your question was easy & short, why wouldn't I do it? I am already donating an average of 6 hours a day giving out free information. It is not fair of you to expect me to type out my entire 200 page book for each person needing the information you want. I also gave you an alternative of using the archives where most of the answers you say you are looking for are referenced.
If you had done that, you wouldn't have writtren such an intentionally ignorant note. You want me to type it all out for you. DOING what you need to do is a LOT more effort than doing the research you need to do to learn what that is. When you are still at the stage where you want me to spoon-feed you the data, I would be wasting my time since you would be even less likely to DO anything anyhow.
Perhaps, when you have suffered enough. NO ONE is going to do this work for you since it cannot be done that way.

We have recently heard about Mono and it's relationship to EBV. Are they completely separate? What are the symptoms of EBV and what can a person who has it do to keep in check.
I was recently diagnosed with Epstein Bar and I have not had the opportunity to talk with my doctor about it. I would like to know more about it, and where I could download some information to read.
Thanks.
My husband was recently diagnosed with probable positive Epstein-Barr. He has had problems with anemia due to
hemorriods and also has genital herpes that flares up from
time to time. When he went to the doctor he was feeling
extremely fatiqued and wanted him to check his blood
counts to see if it was just another bout of anemia. At
that time the anemia was not bad so the doctor suggested running the EBV test. They also told him his white blood count was 4 1/2 instead of the normal 6 1/2 for him. After telling us the results of the test, the doctor said to take a multiple vitamin and eat a good diet. We have been concerned about the diagnosis because of the low white count rather than high white blood count.
Could my husband have just had a bout of the Herpes?

I can tell you that I have done some research and found that it has to do with antibodies in your blood. (I was also told it was related to Mono, and that if you can recall a time when you had a really bad flu then that is probably when you contracted it.) I also have a friend that has it and it has led to plenty of problems with her, but she is doing great now. I guess you just have to take care of yourself and stay on top of it.

To those for whom this information is appropriate,
I am aware that the archives for this subject are extensive. However, DOING what is needed for a wellness program (the only thing so far found to reliably resolve this problem) is a lot more effort than LEARNING about it by sifting through the archives.
Even Jesus had people "walk into the desert" to participate in their healing.
If I had a simple way to tell people what to do, I cerrtainly would be telling people how to do it. Why else would I be donating all this time to the bb? This is why I wrote my book: so peoole could easily understand the process and be able to get started helping themselves. However, that took 200 pages & I will not retype out the book for every person who needs the information.
I get a lot of criticism for occasionally suggesting my book. I make no money from my book. It has cost me a lot to make it available. SO, I try every way I can to point people in the right direction to help themselves without my book even when the most honest thing might be to tell them to get a copy.
I know that the very least I can expect is for people to put in the effort to wade through the archives. Those not willing to do so should get my book. If they are not willing to LEARN, they will surely not be willing to DO.
I am being very blunt because I am assuming that those coming to this bb are not interested in beating around the bush. They will likely have already had a surfeit of THAT.

The fact that the person has leukemia already says that the immune system is severely challenged. ALL conventional treatments further damage the immune system. EBV is caused by low immunity.
Obviously, the answer is to improve the person's immunity. This will take effort & commitment to do the things known that will reliably improve that immunity.
There are literally hundreds of notes on this bb about how to do that.

Here is an interesting article on volume depletion and CFS: http://chat.abcnews.com/chat/chat.dll?Chat?room=abc_fatigue (The question marks are supposed to be in the URL.) I don't know how to make a link (I'm kind of a ditz). I believe that signs of low volume are low blood pressure and orthostatic hypotension (dropping blood pressure upon arising). I used to have that kind of thing until I learned to create energy by avoiding taxing foods, etc. I think I still have a gross fluid problem though. I am thinking that lymphatic congestion could be caused by fluid deficits? Mary J.

Hi Walt,
I've been doing research on slow transit constipation of which hypovolemia could be a result. Is that a possibility? Also hypoxia. There seems to be "pan-enteric neuropathy" in cases of STC. Sweating is abnormal (I hardly do it), etc.
I can remember being constipated as a child and I don't think it had to do with withholding. Maybe it was gluten enteropathy ( which isn't always involved with diarrhea).
Other contributing factors would be candida, parasites, blood sugar abnormalities (eating too often or too much), amalgam (affecting the vagus nerve?), maybe dietary metabolic imbalance, familial nervous system traits, etc.
I can figure how STC would be involved with my producing a diabetic child (the funky neuropeptides, amines, dehydration, electrolytic abnormalities, hypoxia, etc.) I'm going to run all this by my various Internet friends and see what I can come up with. I haven't read all the constipation threads on your site, but have read some of the childhood constipation posts. My eyes are open. Mary J.

I have jsut recently been diagnosed with EBV and I am told by my doctor EBV is a very very common disease and it is also known as glandular fever. He said 50% of patients tested for EBV show positive for both mono and EBV while the other 50% show positive only for Epstein barr but negative for Mono. He said they are the same. So I go around thinking I have mono - Should I go back to him and say I am unclear as after doing my own research I have understood they are totally different?

A pharmacist is not legally required to give the customer a package insert. Demand one, and don't let the pharmacy palm off one of thir simplified explanatory sheets for medical morons on you. If one pharmacy won't provide, try another.
To quote from "Your Medical Rights" by Inlander and Pavalon (1994):
(page 62) Is there a law that requires I be given the package inserts that explain the side effects of medications prescribed for me?
There almost was. In 1980, Congress passed a law that would have required that the ten most prescribed medications include such inserts with each filling. However, President Reagan made this law his first veto.
Is my doctor required to tell me the side effects of medication he prescribes for me?
He should, but usually won't unless you ask. Make sure you demand detailed information about side effects.
Hope this helps!

Dear Tamara,
Briefly: Mono is caused by the EBV. Usually it is called mono the first time one gets it & EBV all the subsequent times. ALL of them (including the "glandular fever") are an indication that the immune system is being stressed beyond its capacity to cope. You could learn some by going to this link: Immunity & Stress
You will recall from the archives that once ANY human has ANY viral infection that the virus stays in that person's cells for the rest of that person's life. Only if the immune system is healthy enough will the virus stay quiescent.
There are many references that would help you understand this. One of the easiest is my book (link on this page). Reading the archives is another way to get into enough depth to understand it but the sheer volume is sufficient to discourage many people from taking the time to read them carefully. The references & resources are listed in the archives if you have the persistance to study them.
The only thing I can say is that DOING what you learn will take a LOT more energy than the LEARNING.
Once you have done your homework, I would be happy to help more. If this were easy to explain, you wouldn't be asking me--a perfect stranger--to explain it for you.

Dear Anna,
Hang on to that doc.
The national norm ,now, is that the law states that pharmacists MUST include the package insert with any prescription drug. If it was not in there s/he had to have had it taken out. Many pharmacists do that because they do not want to be bothered by patients asking questions. Time is money. That is a good pharmacy to avoid. Since most patients do not care to know, some pharmacists just include the package insert when the patient knows enough to ask for it. If you take your prescription bottle back in & show them while you ask for the insert, they will give it to you.
In the meantime, if the Famvir proves safe enough for you to want to take it, and it works, why not? However, NO ONE would suggest that it was a solution to this problem forever. While it is working is the best time for you to learn how to improve your immunity so you don't have it anymore.
I would also urge YOU to take on the responsibility of KNOWING how to improve your own immunity. Even though you seem to have a better than average doc, the doc is almost always the last to know about stuff like this.

Walt,
I guess I didn't make myself clear in my first post. Let me do so now:
1.) I was not criticizing the way you do things, merely telling her what you had told me. I knew that you would also reiterate this to her, which you have done.
2.) I wanted her to know what I had found out by my own research, as this was independent of reading your archives. and the BB here.
3.) I have no problem reading through the archives. Yes, they are extensive and take time to read. However, obviously I am willing to do this as I have gotten most of the way through them. I have found your approach very different from my doctor's and those I found on the web, though I am not saying your views are any less valid than those of others, just advising others to seek sources outside of this one. No two treatment methods are alike.
4.) I have done other research outside of the archives, and this does demonstrate my willingness to learn, don't you think? Otherwise, I would not be here.
5.) I think you have been very blunt with a number of us in reading your posts, and sometimes borderline rude. I understand you do this as a free service because you cannot practice anymore. However, I find that no grounds to be condescending to people/patients who obviously regard you with some esteem. This is based on the assumption you were a doctor because you wanted to help people.
6.) You seem so quick to dismiss all these posts about Epstein Barr, immediately referring newcomers to the archives. Also, because there are so many newcomers with questions about Epstein Barr, it's obviously more common every day. This to me suggests a real need for answers for the patient, yet you won't make the time to write a summary about Epstein Barr regarding your views. If you really want to save yourself time, that would be my first suggestion. This is clearly a very important problem.
If I do not see this message posted, I will not be surprised, however I thought I would give you a chance to see how your statements have reflected on a number of us. (As myself and several others have discussed your suggestions and you personally via e-mail and discussion groups.)
I hope I have cleared up my position on this. Thank you for letting me state my opinion.

There is no reason to be!
There is no such think as EBV infection. This is why it is controversial!
EBV diagnosis is used by physician who do not know what to tell their patients.
The positive test for EBV may be shown at any viral infections! Disregarding if it is or it is not!
Doctors do not know, do not follow research but are chasing only cash flow.
The issue of EBV is more controversial from day to day, because the test is not reliable at all, it is only indicator that something is wrong!
Stealth virus (read above posted), CMV, HH6 within next 7 years wiil be found absolute due to new genetic studies by such companies as XOMA, RIBOZIYME Pharmaceutical, VICAL,
they just need a break!
The events of Gulf War Illness will totally change the concept of EBV, CMV, FM, EM.
There is evidence that severe infections caused by endotoxines in deed may show positive for EBV, altought it is not yet finlized! Same with other like MYCOPLASMAS fermentas incognitos. Only few doctors whom you can count on fingers of one hand are experts by actively working on research!
Numerous crap was presented by most reputable Medical organizations, such as AMA, AAI, and the worse that many members bought and follow this bullshit! The issue became confused by special interest groups such as insurance industry who bought doctors who exclusively sell fraudulent medical opinions to attorneys to lower disability compensations! Yes they put on the market plenty of disinfrmations! One of such is ERIC COMSTOCK a rat in Houston, a waiter to insurance industry.
Please any one in Houston pis at his doors!
I am not surprised that Dr. Soll is stearing clear of clear answer. There is no clean answer at this time.
That is why I believe that the research is required that you will arrive to your own confussion!
I am convinced that it is not EBV but either STEALTH Virus, or ENDOTOXINES, GLUCANS, MYCOPLASMAS or same a new emerging breed!
In my opinion after I deal with it for past 5 years, this is a new emerging pathogen or toxin. If you read about both you may enlarge your horizons. The answer will come soon, but in mean time people need to change their style of life, diet, to deal with it!
The liability of consulting is to high!

I searched all files of my interest in CIA, DOD, and many medical schools and univerities, and anywere I could put my hands on!
I found about 100,000,000 documents.
Good start is with www.cdc.gov!
may use links thru federal links, and www.gulflink.osd.mil,
than www.whitehouse.gov, by the way go .gov not .com!
Otherwise you end up at the site you did not wanted!
and do not get tempted! You do not want to go there!
If I could make ma=ine own prescriptions I will not need doctors!
Search also endotoxin, macrophage, and you will have much fun. With such illness take one day at the time and search for cure! I am in pain at all time! Intestinal pain! BRAIN, EYES, cramps, MTJ, neurospasms! I will kill to get better if this will cure me!! (just kidding)
I want you anderstand, that is why I am screening also this site, I am looking for an answer , and I know I am not alone!

Dear Anna,
I appreciate you taking the time to construct this post. I have been recommended to write a summary of many subjects just for the same reason you mentioned for EBV. I have not done so, not because it is not an obviously effective idea, but because I already spend about 6 hours a day just trying to keep up. I know I am treading water.
Next, the reason I wrote my book the way I did was to help those wanting this kind of information see things in a different, more effective way. You could save a lot of time reading that. However, I also get criticism for recommending my book--like I wrote it to make money or something equally crass. If rthese concepts could be transmitted easily, don't you think I would be doing it? Just getting them into a 200 page book was a real accomplishment.
I have admitted to being "blunt" many times AND have explained why I have found that to be a very effective way to get the point across without wasting either my time or the person wanting information.
Fron your note, it is apparent that you are ready to learn. Iam doing my best to make that information available to you in the best way I know how. The only other reason I can think of for my being willing to donate so much of my time would be that I had constructed this 'site as a lure to get people to a place where I could belittle them.
If I could see every person in a practice, like I had for more than 30 years, I would be better able to judge which approach would work best for that person. I no longer have that privilege so 'site participants also do not get that advantage.
Of course my apprtoach is very different from your doc's. I practiced conventional medicine for more than 10 years & taught it in medical school for 3 before I learned to go beyond that simplistic paradigm. I KNOW how hard it is to get past that indoctrination and how long it takes to understand a more comprehensive way of thinking. All I can say for sure is that it is MUCH easier for a lay person to learn this than it is for us docs who fit into Tolstoy's quote:
"I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives."
OR, how about this one by someone considerably more ancient:
"It is impossible for anyone to begin to learn what he believes he already knows."
Epictetus (c.a.d. 55-c135)
If you were satisfied with the effectiveness of your current doc's paradigm, you wouldn't be on this bb.
I do not take anything said on this bb personally. I hope you realize that I also do not mean anything personally to others.
I appreciate the courage & caring that led you to send this note.
Walt
I'm confused. What exactly are blood titers? When I was tested for the Epstein Barr Virus, I was told that my titers were elevated. What is "normal", and what is considered high? What do they mean?

Dear Pat,
Titer is just a term for the % level of whatever is being tested in whatever is being tested. One COULD call a cholesterol level a titer.
Whether YOUR titers are significant for YOU depends on the normal for THAT lab and what they mean combined with your complete history & physical. NO PHYSICIAN would treat a "titer" even though MANY "technicians" who call themselves physicians will.
Deliver me from technicians masqerading as physicians.
Once people learn that the EBV diagnosis is a cruel FAD that will not even be mentioned in 10 years, they might begin to think for themselves. Use the archives feature provided with this bb & read everything you can find about EBV and Chronic Epstein Barr Virus. THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Yes, I will definitely hang on to my doctor. He is the first one we've found since our old family doctor retired that has seemed to care about his patients. Most others act as if they're in it for the money, and only the money. In fact, one of my previous doctors practically refused care on a day that I saw him. I went in because I believed I had strep throat. He looked at my throat, but refused to do a culture because he was trying to save me money he said. (even thoughm y insurance would've covered it!) He said it was very probable, but it could be something else and that he wouldn't be sure unless he did a culture. But he didn't want to. So he wrote me a prescription for antibiotics and told me they should work, IF it is indeed strep. He wanted to save me money, yet still happily took my co-pay! I went in to see him the following week, much sicker than before. Because he left my strep untreated, my infection proceeded into secondary bronchitis. I was out of work for 3 weeks and ate nothing but medicine and orange sherbet to keep me alive. This is why I love my current doctor!! Good ones are hard to find!
Also, believe me when I say I will return to the pharmacy to get the insert. I didn't realize that they were required by law, as this well-known national chain of pharmacies never bothered to give me one before!
Thank you for your time. I will write again.

Hi Walt,
Thanks for your comments about CFS and the blood supply. I'm experimenting with beefing up mine (B12, folic acid, iron, etc.) and have been using more olive oil. Do you think ALA has merit with juvenile diabetes? It was recommended to me once. I can send Zarin some for the Protein C if she can't find it, as I've seen it in my local health food store. I sent her a copy of your book airmail, and it took over a month to be delivered. I thought it had gotten hijacked.
I was looking into going back to Sonoma State University for graduate school, but at $600+ for 4 units I decided maybe not. Naturopathic school is 40 hrs. a week for 4 years. I did get an idea which I might pursue and that would be getting a job with a naturopathic or alt. med. MD's office. That would be really interesting for me to observe a practice in action! I'd like to do some kind of protocol with Susie that would be recordable, etc. I've been investigating all the preparations like Enzymatic Therapy's Doctor's Choice for Diabetes, Pancreas Tonic (ayurvedic), Glucobalance, etc. I just take one step forward at a time and have been amassing as many ideas as I can. One step at a time--boy what a journey! Mary
I received some articles from Ron Hoggan (he has celiac webpages) about wheat, milk protein, and soy being diabetogenic (I'm asking him about corn). I noted once that wheat and milk are high in phosphorus which can tie up calcium and magnesium. It seems like alkaline electrolytes (organic sodium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium) are necessary for juvenile diabetics to "loosen things up", ease nervous systems, etc. Mary
