Epstien Barr Virus

Posted by Sara on August 10, 1997 at 20:49:26:

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Prodigy health bulletin board is so dull without you!
My question is:
If I kissed someone with Epstein Barr Virus what would happen? And if I got it and had a sore throat - how long would the sore throat last for? And how easy is it to pass along? Are the tests for it acurate? And can anything be done for it?
Thank You in Advance,
Sara

Dear Sara,

Thanks for your kind words. I hope, eventually, the same thing will be said about this BB. Some bigwig at P* has decided to keep alternatives away from the public as much as possible.

Remember, EBV is a VERY weak virus. It only attacks susceptible people (people with stressed immune systems)
--that is why it is sometimes called the kissing disease. It takes very close contact AND a susceptible person to get it.

I would not worry about catching it myself because I keep my immunity pretty good by taking 4 grtams of esterified vitamin C a day. I could do even better if I practiced my skilled relaxation twice a day & exercised regularly.

The length of the symptoms also depends on the individual's immunity. It varies from 6 weeks to YEARS.

I currently have herpes simplex 1 of the mouth and get lesions on my tounge. I am not aware of any herpes or breakouts on the area of my throat, but really don't have enough information to know what I am looking for now or in my future. I have been aware of my condition for about four years now, and I am pregnant at the moment. Can you please provide some insight on this situation.

My mother has been diagnosed with epstein bar virus. What can you tell me about this. My mother tends to worry a great deal. What can I tell her to ease her anxiety. Is it treatable? Can you recover your lost energy.

Any information would be a help.

Dear Tom,

EBV is but an indication that the immune system is not strong enough to stop even this relatively weak virus. As you know, the mononucleosis caused by this virus is called the "kissing disease" because it is too weak to be transferred except by VERY close contact.

All she has to do is learn what things will improve her immune system (do something about it) & all her symptoms will disappear. In a year or so, her blood will show that the infection is gone too. Available tests still show positive for that long after the virus is under control.

AIDS research has produced volumes of information about how people can improve their own immune system. That is why there are so many books available on the subject (written within the past few years) AND why I have dedicated an entire chapter to this concept in my new book (see the link at the bottom of this page).

My 6 year old son has recently been chronically ill with non-symptomatic fevers that last for 3-4 days and crop up every two to three weeks. His pediatrician can find nothing wrong with him and has stated that perhaps he has CFS or Epstien-Barr. It has all been so inconclusive. I am worried because this pattern has repeated itself a dozen times or so for the past six months and his general health may be weaker for it. His fevers are usually between 102 and 104. He has had a number of blood panels done even while with a fever and nothing has been found. My son says that he has no ear pain, stomach pain, sinus pain etc. He has a younger sister and an older brother and myself and his father who have never once been sick since his episodes began. Does this pattern sound like Epstien Barr virus to you??? Please help this very concerned mother.

p.s. His health outside his epsidoes does seem generally satisfactory.

Dear Heather,

Your son almost certainly has BOTH & neither means a hill of beans. If you go to enough of my colleagues in the conventional medical paradigm, you will undoubtedly come up with several other scary diagnoses. We MDs are good at naming things we just are taught nothing about the mechanisms behind these syndromes.

Read "Is This Your Child" by Doris Rapp, MD. If you can't find it in your bookstore, ask your library to find you a copy. Then, if this makes sense to you--which I KNOW it will--call (901) 427-8100 & ask them to send you information about Candida-Related Syndrome & its relationship to the diagnoses you are concerned about. They can also give you names of physicians close to you who know what they are doing.

THEN, as your child gets well, I would appreciate your taking the time to share your experiences with us here on the bulletin board. Others are suffering through the same process you are describing & deserve to know that many options are being deliberately witheld from people like you because they are seen by the allopathic monopoly as being in competition with conventional medical income & prestige.

If you look long enough, with purely conventional physicians, you can probably find PDQ, QRS & XYZ disease as well. When you are ready to stop playing the allopathic monopoly game, I would be happy to point you in the direction of "seeing the forest for the trees" so your child can be well.

I know this may sound arrogant. However, I have seen too many cases like this to be willing to beat around the bush about it. I get really impatient when I see people struggling to push the health care camel through the eye of the allopathic needle.

However, it seems like whether I sleep 8 hours a night or 14 hours a night, Im still very tired all day. I am not at all rested when I wake up in the morning. The diagnosis of EBV is but the tip of the iceberg of what is actually going on with you. It is an indictment of the simplistic paradigm of the allopathic monopoly that we MDs think we have done our job by putting a name to a disorder & then telling the person that they just have to live with it.

Stop worrying about the virus and start learning WHY you have it. I have yet to see anyone with this diagnosis who was not normal within 6 months of doing something about the causes. Remember, the solution to a chronic condition like this will NEVER be something you take (vitamins too) but something you do.

If you think you are ready to become a student of this message your body is sending you, write again here in this subject & I will do what I can to point you in a productive direction. It will be work but it will be worth it!

Dear Heather,

You don't treat EBV! You have to learn WHY that individual's immune system is so weak that it can't even handle such a weak virus as that--& do something about that.

The very first thing is to learn what I am talking about so the individual can understand their resaponsibility for resolving it. The EBV is but the tiniest tip of the iceberg of what is actually going on. It is a message to those who have it if they can learn to read it.

Toward that end, a good place to start is with my new book (see the link at the bottom of this page).

From the notes I have read-Epstein Barr-is alot more complicated then what others have asked. It is a member of the herpesvirus family-this affects one in childhood-how?
Andlater on in life these symptoms can show up-why? Three years ago I was diagnosed with Rhuematic fever and treated as such by two seperate DR.s and just recently a 3rd Dr.-I
deceded it was time to se a rheumatoligist/internal medicine Dr.,in Seattle,Wa.,(suggested by another Dr. before the
latest one-well I went and he says I do not have rhuematic fever and has his ideas and takes alot of tests-well the diagnosis sounds like it may EBV-But still have more testing.Which is fine me, we need to find out what this is!
I have had the traveling arthritic pains(and it's worse when I get stressed and tired or get a cold or the flu)-the swelling across my knuckles looks like rheumatoid arthritis and my face, feet and hands swell alot and more if I exert myself(which is the way I am-I like to do alot things) But this happens alot-For three years-almost. I have low grade fevers accompanying this-. Sometimes the pains I have are severe-nothing helps-But to take something to make me sleep.
My hair falls out-alot-sore throat all the time-I have dry eyes(this has been going on since I was a teenager-I am 38 yrs.)There is alot more-But this is too long already. It would be nice to hear another explanation, Thankyou for you're time!

I have yet to see a case of mono that did not resolve within a few days of 50,000 milligrams of vitamin C intravenously every day for 3-5 days.

Look back in the notes on this BB for the (800) number of ACAM. They would know who the closest physicians to you are who would know how to do this. I am sorry that I do not have the number since I am on tour. I guess I need one of those little pocket wizards...............

Of course, the number is in the resources section of my book if you have a copy.

Let us know what happens. As you can see, from the note at the top of this page, I will be gone till 11/2/97.

Dear Nicole,

EBV does not CAUSE infertility. HOWEVER, the same causes relate to both. You need to become enough of an expert in your condition to see the connection. Toward that end, I would have 2 suggestions:

1. Read "Every Woman's Book" by Paavo Airola, ND.
2. Perhaps it would give you a better basis for understanding it to have read a copy of MY little book first (see link at the bottom of this page).

THEN, I would welcome any questions or comments you might have right here on the BB so others might benefit from any communications we might have.

In school we learn a lot about auto immune disease and chronic illnesses, could massage therapy help him out as far as feeling better, feeling more energetic, more awake and healthy? How can diet help; are there any supplements you reccommend like amino acids or stress vitamins? Extra vitamin E, A,or C? Is it an auto immune thing he's dealing with? Also, recently I've been treated for a herpes sore on my lip, did his EBV have anything to do with it? I'm very concerned about him, and getting him in tip top condition. He's also type A personality and he runs himself down quickly. Would stress management help? Please help me to help him, it breaks my heart to see him so exhausted all the time. I ws diagnosed with EBV in Jan. of '87. I dealt with it for about 6 months and then it seemed to disappear. Then about 2 years ago it resurfaced. I have been severly affected by it, and am doing many things to "treat" it. I did want to say though, in response to the girl who asked about infertility, it is linked to Hormone inbalances. I have a severe imbalance that causes anxiety and depression, which then in turn brings EBV out in full force. The inbalance has made me infertile and I was unable to get pregnant until treated. I could send some great info. on this link. I also found that 100mg of B complex a day and 1000mg of Vitamin C with riboflavinoids a day makes a huge difference. Also, plenty of rest and I just avoid stress and stressful situations altogether. Things are 100% better when I stick to it.

Dear Noa,

Mononucleosis is caused by the EBV.

This new diagnosis of chronic EBV is a fad that will soon pass. However, the virus is such a weak one that VERY close contact is needed for anyone to "catch" it. That is why is has been called "the kissing disease".

The only reason that we are seeing more of these titers in the blood, now, is that the average immune reserves in the population are so low that more and more people can no longer hold the virus at bay.

You know, of course, that once ANYONE comes down with ANY virus, that virus stays in every cell of that individual for the rest of their lives. My book covers this concept well.

Once one has the EBV in their cells, the titer will stay in the blood so long as the system is actively fighting it. Her symptoms have little or nothing to do with her titer. Both are being caused by the same factors that are behind her present level of general health.

Dear Margaret,

CFS is one of the easier chronic conditions to resolve once the individual understands why they have it.

One of the main constants is severe chronic muscle tension which causes the lactic acid level to rise to fatigue levels. A deep, total-body, therapeutic massage, 3 times a week for 2 weeks would be enough to help you a lot for several months before symptoms recurred. At least you would have a respite and you would KNOW that what I an telling you is right.

In the meantime, EVERY case of CFS needs to learn an effective skilled rerlaxation technique & practice it at least 20 minutes twice a day. After a year or so, many people can drop that to once a day but they will have to keep it up for the rest of their lives to prevent its recurrence. SO, if it recurs, they can still go back to twice a day & stop it again.

This is, of course, detailed in my book & you will need to digest that to do this the most accurate & effective way.

Let us know how you do.

I wouold go to someone who specializes in this kind of condition and see her/him fresh with no prior history of seeing any other physician.

Remember, everything you mentioned is directly related to the competency of your immune system. Something you could do in the meantime is go to the library & read anything written in the past 2 years about how you could improve your immune system.

I have a very bad case of mono right now, relapsed after initial diagnosis 3 weeks ago. I have seen 4 doctors over 15 years. All say I have to have bed rest & all have given me antibiodics, which do seem to help within 24 hours. I have had clinical diagnosis of mono 13 times over 15 years. That dosen't include symptoms experienced as mono that I just self rested and they subsided. I don't know where to turn. Right now every node and gland in my body is swollen including my liver ( don't drink). There seems to be absolutely nothing I can do to stop this and I'm feeling very defeated. I am only 38 and my body feels like its 78. My EBV titers always there, my current doctor also dosen't believe in EBV, but acknowleges chronic EBV as a diagnosis for my mono episodes. I have recently considered either seeing an immunologist or infectious disease physician. I would very much appreciate any thoughts you have on this.
Thank you
Kathleen

Dear Kathleen,

The quickest practical thing you could do is find a physician who is knowledgable enough to give you at least 50 grams of intravenous vitamin C daily for 5-7 days. I have yet to see that fail to resolve a case at the time. Call (800) 532-3688.

However, you really need to learn why you keep getting this & do someting about that. Toward that end, your best starting place would be a copy of my new book (link below). THEN, if you want to see WHY you feel the way you do, read a copy of "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier. It is available at any library & bookstore.

THEN, if you still have questions, please do not hesitate to write again here on the BB. This is a stupid "diagnosis" which has nothing to do with what is really going on.

Dear Dr. Stoll, Thanks again for your helpful comments. I have started having the massages and feel quite good because of it. Before I got sick I had regular massages because I played a lot of sport. When I got sick I thought that was the last thing I needed so it was great to get back into it and feel closer to doing normal things as well as helping with the pain. I have also started some relaxation tapes and will also get back into some self hypnosis. Iook forward to your book arriving with more helpful hints. Margaret.

Thanks, Margaret, for the update.

Please keep us on your experiences. Others deserve to know that they are not being offered all of their options by the conventional medical monopoly.

If I can help you via the internet, what should the MD/DO on the spot be able to tell you---and why are you not being told?

Dear Dr.Stoll, I also get very frustrated with the Doctors I have been to see about this problem. The first Doctor told me to go home and ride it out. Looking back now I can't believe he said that.Another Doctor said its a breakdown in the immune system so treated me with homeopathic remedies which certainly helped. My girlfriend had the same thing at the same time and her Doctor put her on Prozac which really helped and in fact she is back to full time work. I am very tempted to give this a go. Another Doctor recommended a detoxing programming . The liver cleansing book recommends a liver cleansing diet. Its so hard to know what to do and also annoying. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks Margaret.

Dear Margaret,

You have in your hands the solution to your problem (my book) which the Prozac is never going to be a permanent solution. Even the most rabid supporters of Prozac would not suggest that CFS is a Prozac deficiency.

All Prozac does is short-circuit the mechanisms in the brain that are trying to send you a message. If you just cut the wires, your body/mind will have to find a louder message.

No one who does a skilled relaxation technique 20 minutes twice a day, does regular exercise & eats a whole foods diet, will still have CFS after 3-6 months. The protocols for doing each are in the back of my book.

Dear Dr.Stoll, Thank you again for your comments. I am still waiting for your book but in the meantime I am continuing with the massages which are helping. I have also started seeing a hypnotherapist who is helping me develop a good relaxation technique. Today he started with what he called autogenic training. It was brilliant. What do you think of this? Thanks again. Margaret.

Dear Margaret,

Autogenics is one of the best ways to achieve the "relaxation response" for those who have a lot of "bracing" & we already know that is one of your main problems.

ANYONE who teaches various forms of skilled relaxation would very quickly see what is likely the best approach for that person. Whatever works for YOU is the best for you. There are probably several approaches that would work for you.

Walt
