anyone have S A D ?

Posted by Vince F on June 08, 2003 at 23:29:54:

I looked it up since I have problems with daylight and
read that that could be a type of it. I think it is more
than just the light and think it is from weakness and
crowds and traffic in the daytime in a big city and any
stress the sun can cause on the body.

I used to be one who could see in the dark and bright light
did bother me but then My vision was always a lot better
than it should be going by focusing point and the like till
an injury. At 40 I had a focusing point a 20yr old is
supposed to have.

Over cast days and the night time are a lot easier for me
to function in but then hardly anyone is out and little
traffic to deal with and less chance of having to answer
questions from people who always want to know why I do
things that don't but would Love to have the energy or be
able to or just why I do what I do like fix my own car.
Things like that get really annoying when struggling to do
them because I want to and have to redo things that others
don't do right.

Hi Vince F,

I don't have SAD but I have a friend who does. She bought one of those full spectrum light panels and it really helped her a lot.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Happygal

I wonder if light would work for me since I seem to need
dark to feel better. Maybe I need to shut all lights. I
usually fall asleep with the TV on and sleep in the daytime
often.

I don't know if I have SAD per say, but I do know my energy is less on the overcast days...also, we've had (in PA) so much rain and grey days, it's been quite hard. Today is sunny thank God!
I do go into a tanning booth for 10 minutes a shot when things get really crummy out..the booth seems to give me a lift. I know it may not be the safest thing, but it feels so amazingly good for DAYS. I love it. I don't overdo it at all...
I would also suggest that going out on those days to get any rays that may be breaking through the clouds that you can't see - to reap their benefits.
I also though, enjoy just being out when there is less people! The less stimulation, the better sometimes!

I moved to Seattle (from Florida)where the sun's rays don't all reach the ground. I found myself crying all the time, sleeping all hours and having no energy at all. I bought the full spectrum light bulbs and they worked like majic. It was especially helpfull to buy the long tubes and have the janitor replace them at work (for the florescent ones over my desk). That helped a lot.

Sunlight doesn't cause stress Vince, It's a longshot, but traffic and crowds don't either unless you have a a mild case of agoraphobia (The fear of open spaces or being caught alone in public) and panphobia (fear of crowds),

At night, there are less people out, true, and night has a way of making space seem "closer" more intimate, naturally less traffic as well.

Unless you are thinking of becoming a vampire, you are probably going to have to deal with people socially during the daytime. Your friends should be able to help in this regard, and as for lighting, you may consider full-spectrum lighting as opposed to fluorescent or regular incandescent, which may disturbing because of the frequencies they put out.

I think sunlight can cause stress by the heat or brightness
and I never needed bright light to see and it makes people
who Do need bright light become more active and with them
having to get somewhere like to work or someplace that is
open, Fast and Many more of them it can be exhausting when
someone is weakened. Eevn walking down a street and passing
someone coming, the average person doesn't realize it takes
energy to make the minor corrections to not bump into them.

Not sure if the light is as much of a problem as the
extra traffic that happens but as soon as it gets light out
I will feel uncomfortable even at first light when few
people are out and about. Could be I know it will get bad
for me soon but there is a Daytime SAD but do I have that ?
I don't have any problems with people since I hav always
been very social and have so many interests I can usually
talk to anyone about theirs and like to learn things I
don't know or tell people things that they don't.

Have you tried polarizing or "Blue Blocker" sunglasses? If heat is an issue, there is a personal cooling system that wraps around your neck, and cools you down about 12 degrees put out by The Sharper Image.

It sounds more like light sensitivity then SAD which is sensitivity to lack of light.

The energy required to maneuvoer down a sidewalk is negligible, unless you are suffering from CFS. Then all energy expenditures are likely to be a problem.

Is this a recent problem, or has it been going on for some time?

Hi Jill

I didnt even know about this treatment for S.A.D. I just spent the best part of the day, lazing like a lizard in the sun today, and WOW, what a difference to my mood. Very upbeat and happy! I get the winter blues bad, but we have been blessed this weekend with great weather, even though winter is in full swing here.

I suffer mostly with mild depression and MAINLY during winter. I cant actually suffering with it in summer. Plus having light brown skin, I need a bit more sun than the average white person to get my intake of vit D. I am fortunate to live in a part of the world where we get lots of sun for a good part of the year. I dont know what I would be like if I lived in Scotland or the northeast part of the states. Not very good probably.

I wouldnt be able to use them at my place of work as I dont have a stationary position at the office. It changes everyday. :) So I would have to save it for home, I guess. But good to know that I have an alternative for the winter blues that isnt harmful and so simple!

I have tried sunglases but my eyes don't seem to adjust
to changing light like they should so they cause a problem
when viewing shaded areas which is uncomfortable and
dangerous when driving on top of dealing with traffic.

I have everything from CFS, FM, to CNS damage so have to
rest when out for a while or it gets dangerous to drive
home. In the begining I ran out of gas about 10X because I
would be SO fatigued I didn't want to stop to get it and
would hope I had enough, the next time I went out. They I
started to carry a gas can and after runing out a few times
I figured how to remember to not get that low.

They Say that SAD can be light or dark.
