auto accident--cant walk

Posted by Lak on October 19, 2003 at 19:19:46:

Walt...

First of all I want to say thanks for all the times you have answered my questions--its comforting to know you are out there. I have a friend, who was involved in a car accident two-weeks ago, that now cannot walk. His vertabrae were crushed and according to the doctors his spinal cord was wobbly, for lack of a better word, before they did surgery to rebuild his spine. I believe it was his midback that was affected as he has full use of his upper extremities. The doctors state that he probably wont walk and that the reason they did the surgery was so he wouldnt be in pain and so he could sit up. They say they have been surprised before and people whom they have said would never walk--ended up walking. My question is....Do you know of any books that would be good to read that talk about the power of the mind and healing the body? For example, some years ago, there was a program on tv about cancer patients and chronic pain patients. Bottom line these people were able to cure their illnesses with their new lifestyles and thinking. There was a young girl on the program that, for some reason, had to have a spinal tap one-time a month and the pain was so severe that she almost couldnt stand it. The young girl was taught how to go into her mind and see her different feelings as volumn knobs. When she had to have the spinal tap she would go into mind and turn down the pain knob--and it really worked. I know this is a long post. I believe in the power of the mind to heal to a certain degree, of course sometimes the body is so damaged you cant repair it. If there's still a chance the spinal cord can be repaired why not use the mind to send signals telling it to repair itself? I hope this isnt way to "out there". Please let me know if you know of any books that may help me to help him. And if you have any thoughts on the matter. It's really sad as this young man is only seventeen. But, he has youth and his health on his side. Thank you.

Hi Lak,

I know there are books like that out there. In particular I'm thinking of one written by a woman from New Mexico. Darn, I can't remember the title and I don't have a clue, but I wanted to let you know those books are out there. You might try doing a search on amazon.com or asking your reference librarian.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi, Lak.

Sorry about your friend!

Go to the library and have them find you 3 books by Jack Schwarz: "The Path of Wisdom", "Voluntary Controls" and "Human Energy Systems". Then reading Michael Murphy's "The Future of the Body" would help motivate him.

The more training and experience he has in SR with imagery, the better he will do.

Let us know how he does.

Walt

What happened in your life before the accident - perhaps 3-6 months? think about it ---emotionally, what was going on...
Delve into this as you delve into the "physical issues" also.

The mind controls everything - if you want inspirational reading, go to Ananda Yoga websites...they have great books that you'll love...very inspiring AND enlightening!

Is this the same Michael Murphy who co-authored Integral Transformative Practice?

Don't know of any books but Chris Reeves is an example I
would look at an a former Pittsburg Steelers runing back
who I am trying to remember his name who had his foot
shot up in Viet Nam who could hardly walk after and became
their Star runing back when they had their dynasty when
Terry Bradshaw was the quarterback can be inspiring. I
remember seeing a movie about him. The owner of the team
kept him and encouraged him which is rare.

I saw a 3 legged dog the other day and was Amazed at how
well it ran but I Guess the TWO legged one I saw on TV
was the Most amazing because it had lost the two on One Side
and it Ran...

Still thinking about that player... Rocky Bliar..I Think..

Had to do a search to remember the story myself. Rocky is
a motivational speaker now and the movie was an ABC-TV one
called, Fighting Back which is the name of his book. ESPN
Classics shows it and may have just shown it. There also
seems to be a BB related to him. I can't link things or
would have. I think his story would be Very inspirational
since he wasn't a very good ball player before his injury
and turned out to be one of the best.
