I just read an article in the paper about left nostril breathing as a way to bring about relaxation and parasympathetic activity, and right nostril breathing to bring forth energy and sympathetic nervous system activity. Well I realized I am always breathing through the right nostril and that my left one is congested, making it hard to breath through the left. How can I decongest my left nostril? It's strange how congested it is, considering I don't have a cold or anything. I've tried blowing my nose but that's not the problem!

Hi BB:
For years, my left nostril has always been less efficient when it came to breathing. It always felt clogged. Last year I learned that a deviated septum was adding to problems that were there already (dysautonomia, vasomotor rhinitis). You may want to see an ENT for a correct diagnosis. Find the cause, and you'll be able to work on the cure:-)

BB,
I once knew the particulars of the different nostril breathing but have forgotten. Any yogic breathing instructor could tell you. One side passes predominently positive ions and the other negative ions. When the body has an excess fo positive, that side tends to be congested so that the opposite side will eventually balance the internal environment and vice versa. EVERYONE'S nostrils tend to alternatively shift like this. Your experience is pathological and, although a deviated septum MIGHT be contributing, it is more likely an imbalance of negative and positive metabolism.
Mountain tops and seashores tend to have high negative ions (healthy) and the rest of the planatory surface tends to have predominently positive ions (unhealthy). Pollution tends to have positive ions and after a rain negative.

Hi Dr. Stoll:
The positive/negative ion explanation is very interesting. It would explain why some people feel good when it rains and during thunderstorms. Do you have any thoughts on the negative ion machines that are being sold?

I am constantly checking to see which side I breathe out of and it DOES alternate like you said, Dr. Stoll, and apparently this is normal, because it is supposed to alternate with differing activity. But can I use the left nostril breathing technique to make it easier to get into a meditative state? Is there harm in forced breathing through the left nostril too much?
Yes, I also did read of the health effects of negative ions versus positive ions. Maybe this is why you feel so revived after a day at the beach or a day out in the country!

Hi BB, I would do the alternate nostril breathing as recommended for a while and then see if I still had the same questions.

Hi, PhillyLady.
In my opinion, they are a waste of money--especially the ones for cars--although using your own bodymind as the final arbitor is probably best.
Alternate nostril breathing is probably only beneficial for getting into a meditative state since the sum total of negative and positive ions evens out during the practice.

I had no idea that nostril breathing was so complicated. positive and negative ions.........hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
So would your electric balance get messed up if one of your nostrils was plugged up? Is the positive and negative SUPPOSED to be balanced? I can't tolerate too much negativity. It really disturbs me. Really it does.

EXTERNAL negativity disturbs me.

Hi Dr. Stoll:
Thanks. It's probably better to let nature generate negative ions as opposed to letting a machine do it. Mother Nature's version may have some components that no machine could ever dream of replicating.
