Headphone & EMF

Posted by Leman [709.2421] on January 01, 2006 at 00:40:04:

Hi,

A while back I post a question regarding safety of headphone in relation to EMF radiation. Dr Stoll responded by saying I should look in to the EMF archive and share what I learn. I take that as a homework, so here is what I learn :)

There are several important factors to consider when evaluating EMF radiation, namely the frequency of the field, its strength and duration of exposure.

1) Low frequency EMF requires high power for it to be a health concern. Example of this is powerline. 50/60 Hz freq but very high power.

2) High frequency EMF can be damaging at very low power level. Example includes handphone. The freq is in the GHz range yet power is less than 1W.

3) High frequency field combine with high power is really not good. Example microwave ovens.

4) EMF can effect the proper functioning of out immune system.

Another important factor to consider is distance. The strength of the field diminished the farther away we are form its source. Exposure time can also play a role. Obviously, the longer the worst.

If they are any mistake in my understanding, someone please correct me.

Soo... in relation to headphones. I still do not know what the frequency of the field is. Can we assume it is the same as the freq of sound being produce ? If it is, then it is in the low freq range. The power is definately low. Depending on headphone, less than a watt. So, is there a health concern ? Low power, low freq means it should not be an issue.

Having said that, we have to remember the distance and exposure time. Headphone sits very close to our head. Less than an inch. And most people use headphone for a long period of time, me included.

I first post this question because I came across a headphone with low EMF radiation. I guess if I want to err on the side of safety, I can always get it.

I know many of you guys use headphone ie listening to relaxation tapes etc. So, what do you guys thing ? Health concern ..or not ?

PS : Did anyone ever did the homework Dr Stoll gave them ? ;)

I'd say you get an A - but I don't understand "any" of it!!!

Hi Lehman,

You are asking about a very low power magnetic field
and varying audio frequencies.
Depending on the listening volume, I would worry more about hearing damage due to the sound levels.

Get the Piezzo-electric (Non Magnetic) type of headphones if you must, but the sound quality may leave you disappointed.
If you are still concerned about magentism, watching your television should give you more to worry about.

Thanks, Leman.

Remember that this science is in it's infancy.

He is asking about an electromagnetic field, not magnetic field.

Thanks, Leman, I'm trying to avoid some technology but you know it's going to be less and less possible. Is there anything to worry about ordinary telephones? I think cordless phones are still a problem, right?
I would say most people do not follow through and hardly anyone reports back so, good for you.

Hi R,

electromagnetic headphones also have a small permanent magnet in them... (just like with a speaker.)

One is a constant magnetic level and the other varies with the information signal (electro magnetic).

For some more information on EMF and the various issues involved, I'd highly recommend reading Dr. Robert Becker's book:

Cross Currents: The Promise of Electromedicine, the Perils of Electropollution

He gives a pretty good overview of how electromagnetic fields really interact with organisms. According to Becker, despite what many people believe, biological tissue is highly susceptible to very low power low frequency radiation. The problem with high frequency radiation is that most of it we are exposed to at the moment is pulsed, and our bodies interpret this as low-frequency radiation (for example, digital cell phones use pulsed microwaves operating at something like 217Hz). There's a brief article on this here:

Cell Phone radiation Intro

Anyway, I'm not sure how much ELF radiation we pick up from a pair of headphones. My guess is that it's more than is optimal. However, I don't think I'll be giving up my headphones at work anytime soon.

Good luck in your purchasing decisions!

Later,

Colin
