Hi Ann,

I can see an opportunist here...
Trying to scare everyone into "going green" in this way can cause only a further deterioration of the economy while enriching foreign exporters of the LED bulbs at TEN times the price of CFLs.
You can compare the EMFs coming from CFLs by holding a
portatable AM radio near them while they are working..
(Set it to a weaker station near the low end of the band)

If you really want a *WAKE-UP* try bringing your AM radio near to your new Flat Screen TV...
Most of them emit Electrical Noise at least TEN times as much as a CFL. Go ahead and try it if you doubt me.
Some brands are actually better than others.. (You can take your radio with you when you go shopping for a flat screen and find out which ones to avoid.)

Do you think that regular incandescent bulbs are so bad?
In the winter, the heat they give off is not wasted..
You actually help to heat the house electrically with any heat they "waste".
I can see the advantage in the SUMMER when that heat has to be taken out again by the AC.. (or when there is no AC). That takes it's toll in higher bills or
added heat to create discomfort.)

I have put about 8 of them in my hall fixtures and
will admit that the light they give off is brighter and less mood-setting than chandelier bulbs on a dimmer switch.
The problem is that the furnace seems to run more frequently and a bit longer.
What am I SAVING DOING THIS??

I agree that they contain mercury and the LED ones do not. That is a problem.
How about we find a way to MAKE THE LED BULBS IN THE WEST to create a three letter word... "JOBS" ?

If we had built more Nuclear Generation plants during the boom of the 90s and during the high profit years in the 2000's we would not even be discussing cutting consumption, which will only cause the Electricity sellers to raise their rates at a time when we can NOW least afford to pay them...
Do you really want the Hyper-Inflation that will come
when rates are raised at the same time as taxes are
increased to pay for all those Bail-Outs???
Just think of the Dozens of Electric plants that could
have been built with JUST the money given to the banks
in the last Bail-Out of $350 Billion!!!

If we are smart in our disposal of CFLs they can be
a money-maker.... Problem is that there is a resistance
to set up the recycling infrastructure to do that.

Why don't we just turn off the lights at night and go to bed instead of running a 24 hour a day world?
Wouldn't that be a bigger saver than running the economy like an open faucet?
Yes, that means the computer too!!! ;-)

Hi Jayne,

Flea Markets seem to have decent prices when you can find them.

Radio Shack, or other specialty stores..
Wall Mart has a few or will have soon.
They are at least $25 per bulb so shop carefully
and make sure they are guaranteed for 100,000 Hours.

Read my other post first. You may change your mind.

where to buy

here's one link, but they aren't cheap. You might check ebay.
I still use incandescents, cheap at wal-mart. The thing is, when
incandescent manufacturers can charge more, because the standard
price has become higher due to CFL's and LEDs, they'll develop a more
energy efficient incandescents, though it will cost us more. Meanwhile,
stock up on normal bulbs before they go off sale in 2010

Thanks, Ron.

It IS time for us to now just "knee jerk" to "progressive technology" just because it is called "green". At least think about it?

Walt

Hi Walt,

I am always wary of the Door-To-Door Vacuum salesman
with the hard sell. If the idea was valid, it would not need a hard sell.

Those of us who remember the hype after the 1974 Oil
shortages also remember the falling prices and the
death of Solar Collectors when prices would not
justify the added cost of alternative energy...
Remember when every McDs had a solar panel on the roof to preheat hot water. They removed them around 1990.

Hi Sue,

Another thing that they do not warn you about...
regarding LED lighting is...
that A POWER SURGE can damage them at a far higher
cost to replace them. It would be wise to use LED bulbs on circuits that are protected by a Surge Protector just like you should use on your expensive electronics, flat screen and digital controlled refrigerators.

Hopefully, we will not be seeing as much power interruption as we did as the height of the energy specualtion of a few years ago.

Hi Jayne,

If you have a few lights which are too bright and are left on a lot, maybe you would be better off putting in
lower wattage bulbs or installing a few dimmers in place
of the wall switches?

It will also save energy to do this and allow you to
turn up the brightness when you need light to clean.
