Safety of mammagrams

Posted by Lana on October 24, 1998 at 13:46:37:

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I just watched a news feature where Peggy Fleming was interviewed. She had a cancerous lump removed about six months ago. She urged women to get an annual physical, mammagram and do a self-exam. Unfortunately, she didn't say a word about prevention. It was though the examination tools were the most important.
I am now 41 years old, and supposedly should have a baseline mammagram done. But I'm afraid that the procedure itself could put me at risk! What is your opinion?

Dear Lana,

A baseline mammogram is not likely a risk.

However, it looks like at least 90% of breast cancer is preventable. For those who care to learn how to do this, I think mammograms are superfluous.

Low fat, whole food, vegetarian diets with high fiber; making sure that at 200 mcg selenium is in the daily diet; adding soy products to the diet; keeping hypothalamic function efficient (skilled relaxation regularly) and regular exercise are some of the most important things to do to reduce breast cancer. Just the selenium alone has been shown to reduce it more than 50%.

How much Selenium per day? I'm taking 25mcg contained with in my 400iu vitamin e (Natures Sunshine).

Dear Nancy,

200 micrograms of selenium a day has been determined to be completely safe and is the presently recommended effective dose. Remember, that absorbable minerals are chelated to an amino acid. If you weigh the selenium WITH its attached amino acid, only part of that weight is selenium.

Sounds like I need to add some more Selenium, then. Should I spread it out over the day, or take it all at one time? Is my Vitamin e (400iu) dose enough?

Hi, Nancy,

Once a day is enough and the vitamin E can be taken that way as well. As a matter of fact, many of the best vitamin Es have been combined with 200 mcg of selenium for years. They DO work together. 400 units of vitamin E is enough for anyone except diabetics with complications who should take twice as much.

Dear Lorraine,

A cyst in the breast is NO worry. Even a cancer of the cervix (if your pap showed that---and from your note it is far from that) takes at least 7 YEARS before it is less than 100% curable. Rechecking you in a YEAR is much more than adequate even if your pap shows carcinoma in situ.

At this stage a serious wellness program would have the pap back to normal within 6 months and the cyst gone in a year. Why not look into it?

There is a small but definite risk to having a mammogram--
from the radiation accumulation. Within the past few months, I have described a technique my chinese medical practitioner showed me that apparently removes this storage following xrays of any type. Look in the archives or look at the past couple of months that are not yet archived.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again. If you are not familiar with how to do a wellness program, go to the home page of this 'site and read the article about it.

Thanks!!!!!

Dear Nancy,

If I'm recalling this right, Walt and Bob said to take a hot bath with a lot of Epsom salts (how much I don't remember) and make yourself stay in the tub for something like 20 to 40 minutes, After that, if the water turns whitish/milky colored, it means that you've released radiation. Me, I'm taking a break on mammograms this year. Have had one every year since I was 30 (am 43 now) because of my mom's breast cancer. Time to give the old mammaries a rest from the squashing and radiation. Best! :)

You can bet if men had to be screened for testicular cancer yearly by squashing the family jewels and radiating them, there would soon be other, non-invasive methods of detection, and a cure. Same for the prophilactic removal of breasts just in case they might be cancerous. Outrageous!

Hi, Nancy.

I haven't posted it for a while and it might be under some seemingly unrelated topic (That is why I changed your title a little--so others in the future might find it easier.).

Since we all are exposed to radiation all the time, anyone who tries this in the beginning will likely have cloudy water. However, in a few days the water should stay clear. Probably all of us would be healthier if we did this about once a week. So long as the water stays clear, we are probably not needing it. SO, each person can figure out how often to do it for their own best results.

Those who have had diagnostic xrays will find that the water gets cloudy at least the first time they do it after the procedure. As soon as the water is no longer cloudy, no more need for soaking.

Procedure: Run a tub of water as warm as comfortable and put 1/2 cup of epsom salts and 1/2 cup of baking soda in the water. Get in & soak until the water cools enough that you feel better out & dried. If you have radiation toxicity to discharge, the water will get cloudy as you soak. If not, the water will stay clear.

I would appreciate any feedback anyone might have.

Walt
