weight-lifting

Posted by melissa on August 19, 2002 at 16:59:51:

Hi Walt,

Recently I started an exercise program which includes 25 minutes on a cross-trainer and weight lifting. I usually lift the weights that are on machines. I want to increase muscle tone and add some muscle mass. I have some visible veins, will lifting weights be okay? Is lifting weights okay for the joints? I looked up weight lifting in the archives, and there was a site about weight lifting for strengthening bones. Could not access the address anymore. Do you know of a good book on the subject of weight lifting that would help me? Thanks for any help!

Yes.
"Is lifting weights okay for the joints?" Yes, done properly weight training will strengthen the ligaments of the joint as well as the muscles that support the joint.

Try "Power To The People!" by Pavel Tsastouline. An excellent book for all, especially women.

Hi Melissa,

Weight lifting is one of the BEST EXERCISES FOR WOMEN, besides stretching and some kind of aerobic exercise that gets your heart working. Strength training is excellent for maintaining bone mass as well as muscle mass (and I don't mean big muscles. Men have lots of testosterone which is why they are able to "bulk up" or get large muscles. Being a woman, you don't have to be concerned about that happening.)

You didn't say how old you are. The older you get, the more important strength training becomes.

There are some excellent books on weight training for women. There is one in particular that I am thinking of but can't remember the title. It's written by a woman doctor and was published within the last year or two. Suggest you do a search or call your local library.

Mary
