what to do for exercise?

Posted by Linda on March 21, 2003 at 06:58:07:

I have been a very active person and always done aerobics, run etc. but now at 60 yrs old my knees are worn out, I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and legs, well you get the picture. I even purchased a rebounder and have tried just bouncing not even jumping and my knees and legs are getting so bad I can hardly walk. What is a person like me to do? The Dr. I go to always says to get plenty of exercise and that really ticks me off but I keep trying.Any suggestions?

HI Linda - my knees are worn out too,,,but I keep active as I can - do a few stairs, etc. - I also take supplements and apply creams for arthritis, which I know I have, as well as Osteoarthritis....I'm a bit older than you too, SO....hang in there!

Hi linda keep active in the gym don't run do walking instead and start working with machines for your upper body arms'chest, back ect but keep active try real light leg work outs that dont bother your knees
but give thoes legs a long rest walking will be good enough for now Iam 66 and I have a touch of parkinsons Disease it started 2 years ago it slows you down but I still do my work outs but I use machines now And there safer for me

Iam still in good shape as iam sure you probley are so adjust your work outs elemanating what hurts you
and stay healthy I have a friend Mary who is an arobic instructor and she is 55 ,loooks 35 and she too is having problems with her knees she works with weights now. But consult with your doctor first on those knees

Yoga Yoga Yoga.... You may actually enjoy Hatha yoga on a few days, which is more slow, more stretching - and then one or two days of Ashtanga or a Power Yoga, which is much more "jumpy" and fast...
BUT, a good combo class of Pilates and Yoga should be great - it tones, can get the muscles warm and stretch. Maybe swimming or just fast walking to work on the heart-rate.
BUT - make no mistake - fast Yoga and fast pilates (maybe when you are home, do some a bit faster) will get your heart rate up!

Have you considered Tai Ji and Qi Gong? They are traditional Chinese exercises that combine controled breathing, gentle movements, and mild streching together to harmonize the bodymind. Many elders in China practise these forms of exercises every morning in the parks or among the trees. In this country, there are classes and books that teach these exercises.

basically it means the peripheral part of your nervous system has been damaged. Diabetics get it when their nerves start to become damaged. Here is a page I found through a search on google.

Hi, Linda.

Everyone had good advice but I draw your attention to Audrey's suggestion. Under water exercise (chest high)is what you should have started at least 10 years ago. If you are a good swimmer then that is what you need to do.

Every community with an indoor pool has a program that is supported by the community and very inexpensive.

Let us know what you learn and how you do. In the meantime, do not forget glucosamine and the EFAs (see arthritis archives).

Walt

Thanks everyone. There is a wellness center about 25 min. drive from me but the chlorine in the pool is horrible. Even people complain that when they walk in the door they can smell chlorine. Doesn't sound like a "wellness" center to me. I do like yoga and weight lifting so I will work with that.

Hi Linda,

I don't know too much about it but there is a form of breathing that is supposed to be similar in benefits to cardio. Look at "Oxycise" (i think) at Amazon. Like I said, i don't endorse because I haven't used it, but might be worth checking out. Ask HY about your condition, he advocates Prolotherapy (again I have no opinion).

Be well,

Sounder
