It is very odd that SOMETIMES I can go up the stairs at home (1 flight) two (2) at a time, seemingly without effort; but at other times it is an great effort and then the hamstring area feels incredibly tired afterwards.
I do intense very slow resistance training for each muscle group in my legs about every 6 days.
Any clues
Linda

Hi Linda,
Sounds like the leg muscles are hypertense (tight). Try stretching or massaging them before going up the stairs.
The same effect (tiredness) can happen if you are bracing. Levels of bracing can fluctuate.
Keep track of activities that preceed this event and see if there is a pattern over time.
Best wishes,
Jan

Hi, Linda.
Listen to Happygal. You are also experiencing what is called the "weekend warrier syndrome" produced by your exercise schedule. Either stop it or start doing it every other day.
Let us know how you do.

Hi Jan,
I think that the available strength is related to psychological factors, like if I feel optimistically motivated then I function without effort; whereas if I'm feeling bored and lonely then great effort may be required.

Thank you Walt, but it can't be "weekend warrior sybdrome" as I do resistance exercise daily, and of course I use the stairs MANY times every day. However as I've only been in this dwelling a few weeks, I'm hoping that the extra exercise will be beneficial.

Thanks, Linda.
"I do intense, muscle group exercise every 6 days." My quote may not be exact but it is close enough for government work. This is the definition of "weekend warrier".
Help me understand.

Hi
Walt, I do a little bit EVERY day.
And because I'm well over half way to my 1st century, it takes me at least 4 days for a muscle to recover from the INTENSE ULTRASLOW (maybe 4 reps per minute) resistance training that I do to failure, taking 1 to 2 minutes per set. I aim for 2 sets every day.
You may think that is not much for one session, but the keyword is intense and I expect a "burn" every time.

Linda,
To avoid the "weekend warrier syndrome" exercise sessions MUST be at least close to each other in intensity.
Learn about this at your library or look for exercise books at your bookstore.
During the first 15 years of my career I served as the "doc" for our home highschool football team and the University of KY Lady Kats.
I will stop trying to convince you until you have done your homework. IF you can find a beter explanation I will be interested in hearing it. The proof of the diagnosis will be in what approach stops your "unexplained" symptoms.
Let us know what you learn.
Walt
