Abnormal lab results/Feel fine

Posted by Leigh [747.4386] on December 08, 2008 at 11:49:04:

Hi Walt,

I've been writing to you off and on concerning a few symptoms/lab results.

*I had intermittent swelling of the left knee for 4 years (doctor originally thought I had Poststreptococcal Arthritis... since then it was determined that I did not). I had arthroscopic surgery (synovectomy) and have been happy with the results, no swelling.
*My ASO and Anti-DNase B were very elevated. Doctors have said I am possibly a "carrier" of Strep, but that it wasn't causing the swelling.
*Then I had one short week of mild heart palpitations. Got that checked... I have mild MVP, but no associated thickening or any other problem. The doctor said there was NO rheumatic heart association! They agreed with you about it being a common variant (after I brought it up).
*The cardiologist did have a few more labs run to be safe because of my clinical history. There was a slight effusion around the heart (also considered normal). All of the labs were fine, except my ASO was still very high - 1,000 something (highest it's ever been, but no physical symptoms). Also my complement C3 was low (66) (normal is 88-201).
*I most recently went to an immunologist (a good one). He ordered some labs:

C2 - normal
C3 - was 43 (lower than ~ 2 months ago)
C4 - is pending (they tested C2 by accident, so I'm going in today for more labs). Previous C4 was only a couple of points low.
IgA - normal
IgG - normal
IgM - normal
Rheumatoid Factor - normal

*He's not sure why these labs are abnormal when I feel healthy.

**I had been doing 2LS for 6 months (miss alot of the SR of the program). I started adding some cheats back and have felt fine. (Although I did have a period of about 1 month of consistent headaches (back of head pressure) and neckaches). I got rolfed 2 times so far, so we'll see. No pain for about 1-2 weeks now.

***My question is: Could my complement level C3 be so low because my body is fighting some type of systemic Strep antigen. I am wondering if that is why my antibody titer is so high. That ther is really nothing autoimmune going on, but rather a true, appropriate body response to an antigen. I am not sure why I don't feel bad, maybe it's low level. I did have recurrent strep throats when I was younger. Or maybe I am a carrier or maybe this is a low level, underlying, brewing autoimmune type thing that I can nip in the bud by a continued wellness lifestyle (focusing on improving my SR to my practice).

I know this is complicated, but any ideas???

Thanks,
Leigh

Yeah, Leigh, complicated!

With as much evaluation as you have had, my opinion is that only the "wisdom of the bodymind", as the current sophistication of the medical profession is concerned, can help you now. That means strict practice of the 3LS (underwater aerobics), can get you to where anything more can be determined. Remember the 3X3X3 rule.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi Leigh,

I don't know much about the lab results (I'm a massage therapist), but if rolfing appears to be helping you, you might at some time also think about getting regular massages. Maybe do it after the rolfing series is over. Rolfing works connective tissues, but also addressing your muscles may be helpful for your overall health.

Best wishes,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Thanks! I am not sure if the rolfing has helped, but possibly it has. I had 2 sessions 2-3 weeks apart and at the time I was still getting the head/neck aches. I haven't been back for about a month (he was out of town), but in the meantime, they seem to have resolved. Maybe it just needed to take hold in my body.

Thanks again!
Joy

Hi Walt,

Thanks for getting back to me. What do you mean by "underwater aerobics?" Also, I feel great (outside of that 1 month period of head/neck aches. They seem to come and go every so often. My guess is that they are from stress effect (don't feel stressed out, but I know I do have a habit of bracing/rushing around). So, I'm thinking that SR will help with that (along with rolfing/chiropractic/massage).

Since I added back occassional cheats (maybe some sugar imbedded in chili or soup, a bagel here or there, and a few glasses of wine on occasion), I have not noticed any problems.

Are you suggesting that even though I feel well, because of these two abnormal lab results, I should go back to the strict perfect whole foods diet (exercise is never a problem, into fitness for years)until the lab results return to normal (which I'm not sure they ever were).

What if I go on this restrictive diet indefinately and these labs just stay that way? I've always eaten decently (previous to this). I never eat any desserts and I usually did eat the non-perfect whole foods diet with occasional "bread/wine" type cheats. I don't want to become strict again indefinately if I don't have to. If it sounds like I do, then I will. I just wanted to see if you are recommending that based on my lab results alone. If I can keep the head/neck aches at bay, can I loosen up on the plan a little?

Thanks!
Leigh

Here is a link that explains what normal blood counts
are and why they might vary..

Thanks, Leigh.

The best way I know is to be perfect on the PWFD for a couple of weeks and see how you feel. How big is the town you live in? Any town of 50,000 would have a YMCA (or YWCA) giving this program in their pool as a public service. If there is no program there, you might find one in any public indoor pool within driving distance. You will need an expert to instruct you (along with the rest of the particpants) until you can do it on your own. It needs to be done 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes. Most programs last an hour.

Let us know what you learn.

Hi Walt,

Oh, yeah, I know what you're talking about. I actually am pretty fit and I don't think I'd get enough of a workout with that. I lift weights, walk on the treadmill, and do the rebounder (and sometimes yoga).

*Was there a specific reason that you recommended the underwater aerobics?

I felt great doing the PWFD and since I've added some other things back, I still feel great! Outside of the head/neck aches that I get occasionally (and I did not see any correlation with what I was eating or doing), I feel awesome!

I am just concerned about my eroneous abnormal lab values (that something could be brewing that hasn't come to the point of giving me symptoms).

That's where my concern lies...

Thanks,
Leigh

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the link! Interesting. The two lab values that were off on mine (one was very off) were not on the list, but as a general explanation, good information.

I'm mostly concerned because both the ASO and the C3 are related to autoimmune disorders.

The ASO was 1,380 IU/mL (normal: 0-330)
C3 was 66, then went down to 43mg/dL (normal: 88-201)

From my reading, that's pretty darn low. I've read stories of people with lots of symptoms with way lower ASOs than me. I just don't get it!

Thanks for your help!
Leigh

Hi Leigh,

Do you have any suspicions of an infection that might
not yet be giving you symptoms?

Do you think that excessive exercising might be causing
inflamation and that might result in an immune response?

Hi Ron,

Other than my lab results and previous knee inflammation (now good), no... I used to get a lot of colds and possibly had untreated strep throat, but no chance of rheumatic fever (the specialists have determined. Just thinking that maybe my lab values are off (not b/c of autoimmunity, but b/c maybe there is a low level bacteria somewhere in my body (but I feel fine).

Good thought about the exercise, but I am really pretty moderate with it.

Thanks for the ideas!
Leigh

Thanks, Leigh.

The reason for the underwater aerobics is to get the full benefits of the aerobics while preserving your knees. You have to live with them for quite a while yet.

Hi Walt,

Oh, that makes sense. Yes, I have cut down on any high impact exercise. My knees never hurt, nothing structurally wrong (good MRIs & Xrays), but since I had the inflammation, I have stopped running and now do low impact (walking, rebounding, yoga, strength training) to keep them healthy.

Thanks for all that you do for everyone! You have helped so many people!

Leigh
