Question for Dr. Stoll about buspirone/GAD.

Posted by Daniel [9801.7569] on April 18, 2009 at 23:33:14:

Hey Dr. Stoll,

First I must say, thank you for all that you've done with this site and with all of the help you give to people. You truly do make a difference.

Ok, to my situation. I have fairly intrusive anxiety issues that I've been dealing with, much of which has limited a lot of the things that I'd like to be doing and enjoying. Much of the time, I'll feel symptoms such as confusion, lack of concentration, feeling foggy and distant, along with unwanted feeling of anxiety in situations that don't warrant it. I've also developed a full body tremor that flair up when I'm feeling especially anxious. Now, I've been doing SR for 2 or so months, and I'm quite a deal improved since then...but I was wondering if it would be horrible to be put on a run of buspirone along with the 10mg of Lexapro that I'm already on so I can atleast feel capable while I'm recovering?

I hate the idea of going on another drug, but the generalized anxiety is interfering big time with my life.

Any advice or info on buspirone, tips to help speed recovery, yada yada would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Dan

I have anxiety due to severe health problems. I found and my doctors
agree that a strong regimented exercise program makes a huge
difference. I did at least 60 minutes of a high intensity work out and
tried to get out in the sun for vitamin D. Working out is hard but it is
worth it. I was able to get off anxiety related medications. It took
about 1 month - 3 to see a huge difference.

Thanks, Daniel.

What are the things you "would like to be doing" that your anxiety is inhibiting?

You are just at the earliest stages of some benefits of your SR--patience! Listen to anniew if you want to greatly speed up your progress.

I see no problem with your use of temporary meds to "take the edge off" so long as you will be ready to pay back that benefit with the problems of withdrawal.

Walt

Hey Dan,

A lot of your symptoms sound like mine when I was reacting to foods I was allergic to. When I cleaned up my diet -- in a big way -- I was less anxious, less confused, more confident in social situations, more concentration, no fog. I was really amazed at how just changing my diet decreased my anxiety and all those symptoms.

I'd keep doing SR but also look into the food aspect if you haven't already.

Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks for the answers so far guys. As far as what I'd like to be doing, hmmm...pretty much anything that a normal 21 year old should be doing. I'll admit, in the past month or so, atleast half the time I've felt completely back to normal and have been able to be myself and be the kind of social person that likes to be around people that I love being....but this past week I have been under a good amount of stress, and this has seemed to bring on alot of what I had been experiencing, which makes doing much of anything a real chore, thanks to the anxiety and unease I feel.

As far as what I'm doing at this point, I've dedicated myself to clean up my diet better and eliminate refined carbs, while getting more fruits and veggies. I'm also going to shoot to get atleast 2 sessions and hopefully 3 sessions of SR in per day...and I already lift weights and run, so I'm covered there.

Basically, I have all the motivation in the world, because I've tasted what it's like to be without these limiting symptoms, and I want more of it. Like I said, in the past month besides these past few days and a two weeks ago when I was reacting badly to an experimental increase in Lexapro, things have been much improved, meaning I know that I'm "getting there". Things are just frustrating when you think you've got it figured out and you fall back a bit.

But I will push on...and thanks for any more advice you leave. It means a lot.

Thank you.

My pain clinic tried to put me on cipramil, effexor and one other and all made my symptoms worse. And this can be a predictor of food intolerance..so I got back in the pool started with one lap now do 35 and work out in the gym and do yoga...I look fitter than ever and slowly I got out of the depression I had had for the first time in my life caused by pain. I lokk back and realise it was the first time in my life I hadnt exercised when the pain got too much. It is so hard but it is SO worth it. You would be surprised how many men swim in the morning with me in their 50s onwards for their daily 'mental health pill'
