A Challenging Question: Corneal Disease

Posted by Heather on May 22, 2002 at 15:25:53:

I searched the archives, and didn't find anything on this yet. Is there any way that keratoconus or corneal disease can be treated with supplements? In keratoconus, the cornea steeps and becomes unstable, causing vision loss. It can be corrected with lenses for awhile, but eventually corneal transplant may be necessary for some. Opthamologists really aren't sure what causes this, although there appears to be a chance that it is genetic. Other theories abound, including eye trauma. Keratoconus overlaps with connective tissue disorders, chemical sensitivities, allergies, type A personality, fibromyalgia-quite often. There is some evidence to suggest Magnesium deficiency is a common element(sure enough, I tested extremely low for Magnesium). Aside from that, I'm not clear what would help. I am just entering my thirties and this is relatively degenerative, though can stop at any time. I found it quite humorous when I asked at the eye office about natural treatments- or even simple supplements- and was told, "If there were any, we'd be out of business!" I thought to myself: "My thoughts exactly!" I've been taking 25,000 Vit A a day in a High Energy supplement. This year, my practical vision (functional vision) tested 30 pts. better (they said they were getting "really weird readings"). This is a very, very expensive disorder, costing roughly $1200 a year simply for topography to keep tabs on it. Not counting astronomically costly special lenses. The topography shows further degeneration, so I'm not clear whether the Vitamin A is helping in any concrete way. Any insights or areas of research would be appreciated.

My friend's husband has Keratoconus. He did have the corneal transplant quite a few years ago and wears a corrective lens. I can't get him to use the nutritional supplement that I use, but I've heard at least one other person say that their Keratoconus improved. Some people just prefer drugs and surgery, I guess. And the eye surgeons are probably very grateful for that!

Cheezi,
What was the nutritional supplement that improved keratoconus?

Hi, Heather.

I do not have any magical programs for this either. I have had a very few cases who have shown steady improvement with serious wellness over a period of several years.

This may be due to the fact that I have seen so few cases of this diagnosis over the years.

Since wellness can only help general health what would you have to lose?

I would also be sure that I was taking a very easily absorbed magnesium and get an intracellular magnesium done regularly (about every 6 months) until the level is at the high end of normal for about a year and then yearly.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thanks very much, Dr Walt.

Thanks for those tips on Magnesium.
