Halos around lights

Posted by Angel on August 18, 2003 at 05:24:18:

Hi,
I'm 40, myopic. Have worn glassses and contact lenses since the age of 9. Yearly eye exams and no other problems (glaucoma, etc.).

Off and on through the years I've have bouts of conjunctivitis (mostly from sleeping in contacts when I was younger), at which times the halos around lights were present. Upon clearing of the conjunctivitis the halos disappeared. As of late I wear my glasses most of the time, and I haven't have a conjunctivitis episode in years.

Just went outside in wee hours of morning to check the mail. Every light, including the moon, is surrounded by a broad halo. This was not present yesterday. As I haven't inserted my contacts (Acuvues) in about two weeks it is doubtful this is another bout of contact-related conjunctivitis.

Google search brought up glaucoma as a possible etiology. Any other ideas? How long should I wait to let this disappear before becoming concerned? What should I do about this, other than panic? lol

Thank you.

Hi, Angel.

ANYTHING that causes corneal edema will cause halos. Some of the problems are quite serious. If this was caused by conjunctivitis this time you would have other symptoms as well (you have had it before).

Get examined by an Ophthalmologist ASAP!

In my opinion, any office that does not work you in within 24 hours is not the right professional to be entrusting your sight to! Let us know what you learn.

Walt
