First off let me begin with that I am under a LOT of stress right now.
I layed in bed this morning and watched the news, got up, had my morning bm, strained a little like I usually do, and right after that I had these auras in my left eye. No pain. Took a shower, made coffee, came to my pc and was trying to read but the first letter of each word was not there, like a blind spot. I had this a few years ago but it lasted an hr. and was in the far corner of my eye. By the way my period is also due. So I left the pc and sat on my bed. About 5 mins. layter it went away as fast as it came, but I feel a bit shaky, maybe because I got anxious about it. The whole incident lasted about 10 minutes. Could I have stood up too fast after I had the bm??

I just spoke to my doctor and he said I may have experienced whats known as an ocular migraine. I see him on the 19th so he will check me out. Is it possible for an ocular migraine to lead to a stroke or another disorder?

That is (or sounds like) an occular migraine; which can be stress induced - and maybe has nothing to do with the BM....
If you feel a little "off" in the stomach afterwards, it for sure is.

Stomach feels fine, no headache either.

I get occular migraines, as well, and associate them with both stress &
hormones. They're very disconcerting. Sometimes I get a little nauseated, but
not usually. The first time I had one, I lost my vision in one eye, drove myself
to the ER, & that's when they told me I wasn't having a stroke, just the
migraine. I was very worried at the time, because my mom had had a serious
stroke. They told me the two are not connected, but I'm not sure I'd hang my
hat on that.
I had one last week, which I believe was triggered by a small square of dark
chocolate. Not sure how this would work, because it's believed that caffeine
can help get rid of headaches by shrinking capillaries. But I'm certain there
was a connection. Mine lasted about 30 mins & vanished suddenly. No nausea
that time, but I was shaken by it.
Hope to hear how it goes at the doc's & what you find out.

This is migraine. I suffered with migraine for years and the very first symptom was that whatever I looked at a piece of the picture was missing. What followed was some other visions disturbances (wavey lines) before the actual headache. Sometimes, I never got the other things, just the bit missing, but I always knew what it was. It went away in about half an hour.

In susceptible people, chocolate is one of the things which can induce a migraine attack. Cheese is another one.

Since you've been so forthcoming, you ought to take this time to consider why you are "straining".You should never have to strain, certainly not as a "usual" thing. Perhaps you should consider adding some fiber( and/or magnesium) to your diet. I am sure as you address the migrane thing, you'll find some ways to improve your diet and lifesyle.Hope you find your answers!

An Occular Migraine has no headache, only vision (ie, occular) symptoms as you described.
Many times an upset stomach follows.

Funny you should say this. I ate quite a bit of chocolate last night about 9PM, it was delicious chocolate my daughter brought back from California. Maybe this could have triggered it.

Not entirely true. Occular migraines can be accompanied by headache, or not.
Same with the nausea.

I thought I did say that. Sorry if I worded it wrong; I meant that they can or can not have pain.
When I had it I thought it was a stroke! I thought migraines were only painful - and thank God I never had another one nor any other migraine.

I read somewhere that occular migraine is actually a very mini mini stroke, not enough to cause serious problems. It is associated with that kind of thing though.

Do you have an answer for Ocular Migraines? I've read they have nothing to do with a stroke, but if the continue, one needs to see an eye doctor. I read it is brief, with no other symptoms, altho a headache can come on. What's your opinion? I hope you are feeling well.

I didn't hear any of that; in fact, quite the opposite - (even on the board)...

Hi, GB.
See your ophthalmologist at once. Explain your symptoms carefully to the receptionist and she will get you in ASAP. In the meantime avoid any activity that would jar your body.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.

I have an eye appt. in a week. This happened to me 3 yrs ago and hasn't happened until now. Can you tell me why tou feel its an emergency? I feel just fine. Nothing happened after that yesterday, no headache, slept well, why the urgency?

G.B.
What you experienhced years ago was just a warning and you were lucky to have only temporary symptoms. There are too many very serious and irrevokable problems that can cause your current symptoms. The fact that it happened once before only makes this tims more urgent.
It MAY be nothing but you are flirting with blindness in that eye if it is something. The most common cause of what you are experiencing is a detached retina.
Delay is not something I would take a chance on.

That's exactly what I was going to say. I've had this happen many times. Sometimes a headache follows the lights, sometimes not.

This vision phenomenon is a symptom of migraine and is called scotoma. You can google it. My mother had these attacks for years and both my brother and I have them, though not as badly as she did.
