Pupil size difference

Posted by Helena on November 25, 1998 at 18:22:51:

About 2 years ago I took Zoloft and one of the side effects
was increased pupil size in both eyes, which for about a
day showed little response to light. By the time I got
to see the doctor they had normalized somewhat, but one
pupil was larger than the other. It's been over a 1 1/2 years
since I stopped taking Zoloft, but the difference is still
there. One pupil (in medium light) is 3 mm, while the other
is 4 mm. The eye doctor who examined me today said that everything
is normal; she thought it was a fluke and probably not caused by
the drug. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Dear Helena,

I would tend to agree with your doc. The most likely scenario is that you were born this way & never noticed it until you took the Zoloft. Once your attention was drawn to the difference it has been hard for you to ignore what you have noticed.

I know how hard that may be for you to believe but it is likely true anyhow.

You would be surprized to know how often this tiny variation is present in the population. I have looked in many thousands of eyes with my ophthalmoscope. I stopped noticing the timy differences before I got out of medical school because it was so common & did not mean anything anyone knew about.

If you ask an Iridologist, s/he may have more to tell you but I would not put any more worry into it if I were you.

Walt
