eye pressure

Posted by Jan [3157.7644] on June 18, 2009 at 16:12:52:

You recommended castor oil drops in the eye to reduce pressure. They really work as my pressure is back to normal. Is it o.k. to keep on using the castor oil drops to prevent the pressure from going up again?

Hi Jan,

How many drops do you use? How often? I'm curious because my family has a strong history of glaucoma.

Thanks,
Jan

Thanks, Jan.

Yeah, this stuff works realy reliably and rarely causes any allergic response. I just wish it was very expensive so the docs could make a lot of money recommending it :o)--:o(.

It is safe to use forever. I do have a feeling that the 3LS would, after a year or so, keep the pressure down if you gradually stopped the castor oil.

At first I used 2 drops of castor oil morning and night. Now that my pressure is down I use 1 drop at night. I hope this is a good maintenance dose.

Hi Jan,

Did the greasy eyeball feeling bother you, and if so, did you find any relief from that?

I tried the castor oil drops a year or so ago for a couple of weeks and just could not stand the oil constantly swimming past my field of vision and making my vision blurry. I did only use them at bedtime, a single drop in each eye, and I tried dabbing the corners of my eyes repeatedly with a kleenex to sop up the excess, but the feeling was still quite unpleasant.

I know any of this is preferable to glaucoma, and I should start the drops again because my pressures are up again, and fairly different between right and left. Just not looking forward to that grease-ball feeling.

I'm really glad they worked for you. That's very encouraging.

Thanks,
Nutmeg

Nutmeg,

Try using a MUCH lower dose.

Thanks, Dr. Stoll. I'm not sure how to use less than one drop per eye, though.

Watering down the oil in the dropper bottle doesn't seem like it would work, because the oil and water would not emulsify without something else added.

Maybe I could dab a tiny bit of oil on a clean finger and touch that to my inner lower lid?

Any other ideas? I'd really like to stop this progression before my eye doctor starts talking about Rx drops.

Thanks,
Nutmeg

That's what I was thinking: dab a little on the lid.
Is this an ophthalmic type of castor oil or just out of any bottle?

Hi AT,

I think I will try that tonight and see how it goes.

What I've used is just the pure castor oil that you use for castor oil packs. I got a tiny bottle (2 oz, I think) from the HFS that I opened fresh and didn't use for anything else. It's not sterile, but clean, anyway. I transferred a little to a clean glass dropper bottle.

thanks for the tip.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg,

The only qualification I have known about the quality of the oil is that it is "cold pressed" castor oil. I was unaware that you already were using only one drop. You might try the "small drop on your finger touched to the lower lid". I have no experience with such a small dose. Let us know how you do.

Walt
