My husband has developed an eye infection. It didn't seem like pink eye because there was no pus or crusting and at first it felt like there was an eyelash or something in the eye and it was VERY painful. He went to the doctor who didn't see an object or scratched cornea and gave him an erythromycin eye ointment. It didn't work and got very red, puffed up and half shut, so the doctor prescribed eye drops called Ocuflox (benzalkonium chloride) and told him to take it every two hours for 24 hours. He took them for two days and ran out, but his eye feels better but is still bloodshot and very teary.
The medicine gave him temporary relief every time he took it. Should he renew the prescription or do something else?
What could this be - is it dangerous?
Thank you for any help.

No diagnosis over internet!
It could as well be blepharoconjunctivitis.
Such condition can also develop after some chemical exposures.
With sitation like this one of the best treatment is to apply steam/vapor !
Get a sterofoam cup and put napkin in it.
Than pour boiling water.
Keep it on the table and bend over and place eye over to allow it to get steamed.
Also compress on eye with tepid tea bags may provide relief.
Eye infections could be contageous.

I have the EXACT same condition!!
I have tried prescription eye drops which made my eyes red and burned!! I also have tried antibiotic/hydrocortisone gel which you place on inner eyelid.
Neithor really helps steam is recommended also eyebrite tea bags as a compress, I have tried this it seems to help!
My eyedoctor also recommends keeping eyes hydrated with saline eye drops or rewetting solution.

Thank you, Paul and MAI,
YOu both seem to agree about the steam method and I'll tell him to try it. Unfortunately, today he woke up with the other eye infected. And, like Paul, the first medicine he tried made it sting and neither medicine really helped. I wonder if he should just go to an eye doctor? This doesn't seem like ordinary conjunctivitis because of the lack of crusting and pus.

Continue steaming, and teabag (any teabag).
You may try also to soak with salt in "teabag", altough it is not as pleasnt.
The "infection" of second eye is not surprising.
The antibiotic could be helpful, seeing opthalologist can only heart the wallet.

Hi, Red-eye.
This sounds like iritis, or a similar diagnosis, which is a serious condition for which the general physician would have no insruments to make the diagnosis. HE should have already referred you to an ophthalmologist!!
Get to one ASAP and let us know what the real diagnosis is.

Eye infections can be VERY dangerous.
I would, if I were you, definitely get your red-eyed hubby
to a competent (good luck!) Opthalmologist, and get a REAL diagnosis and treatment, instead of playing this dillydallying and hit-or-miss guessing game.
Good luck!

Hi, everyone,
Just wanted you to know that my husband went to the opthamologist today and found out that he had a viral infection in the eyes. Sort of like getting a cold in the eyes. I'm glad he went, for he needed to change eye drops and he'll have to take them for a week.
Paul, please take note and if you still have the infection, I think you should go to the eye doctor. At least my husband didn't have the much more serious Iritis, but any kind of infection must be looked at. Will you let us know how you do?
Thank you all for your support!
