Fingernail fungus and contacts

Posted by Cindi on August 01, 2001 at 14:14:36:

Is it possible to transfer fingernail fungus to eye contacts? I developed a eye infection last week while wearing my contacts and now I see that I have a nail fungus after my acrylic nail came off of the finger that I used to put the contact in with. Is this possible? If it is should I remove all my acrylics and seek medical treatment? I am using eye drops prescribed by an eye doctor for the infection. (Maxitrol) My week of treatment is up and it still feels like I have the infection.

Hi, Cindy.

Not a fungus but any kind of bacterium could have been transferred. Acrylic nails produce perfect places for bacteria to flourish.

You had better see your doctor for antibiotic drops before this gets serioius (depending on what kind of germ you have been harboring under those nails).

I surely will be glad when the acrylic nail fad is a thing of the past! They are not only ugly & unhealthy for the nail but harbor all kinds of beasties that cause disease in other places. I think you are suffering one of these right now.

It could even be allergy since many people are very hypersensitive to the acrylic or the glue.

Walt
