Dr. Stoll,
What causes broken blood vessels in your eyes and is there a way to permanently remove them?
Thank you.

I am not Walt, but it may take time till he comes to your message. As far as I know this may mean high blood pressure, eye infection, kidney problem, conjunctivitis, or just an irritation of the eyes. If it is just irritation, it should disappear within a few days. You may pick up what is appropriate to you.

Hi, Ben.
Listen to Karel.
Beyond that, I have many questions:
1. Are the blood vessels in the retina?
2. Are they on the white part of the outside of the eye?
3. If on the outside, do they cause a totally red area that spreads to involve the entire white part of the eye (sclera) or are they localized?
4. How often do they happen?
5. If in the retina, have you lost vision?
6. Do you have easy bruising in other parts of your body?
Walt

I have some more details that I was hoping you could tell me this should be looked into further and what you think it may be.
Sometimes I wake up with a headache behine my eye and I have broken blood vessels int he whiet par of the cornor of my ey. 9 Not completely red just somewhat.
I also always get this same symptoms after long bike rides (20-35 miles) When they are over I end up with broken blood vessels in the white part of my eye in the inter cornor. This is bad immediatly following and I ususally have a headache. with in two days these usually clear up.
Since the activities that this happen after sleep and heavy exercise are so different I really confussed.
Any thoughs on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, Peggy.
You need a complementary medical practitioner in your part of the country. Let me know what part that is &, perhaps, I can refer you to someone I know personally in that area.
In the meantime, I owuld consider taking about 3 grams of pure bioflavinoids a day to see what good that would do. This cannot harm you in any way and you would know if thery were going to help within a few weeks.
Let us know what you learn. The bioflavinoids working would not eliminate you need for seeing someone competent in your area.

Walt thanks for your response. I live in Union County NJ. Where can I get pure bioflavinoids. Is that from a health food / pharmacy or by prescription?

Hi, Peggy.
Call (800) 286-6013 for the closest knowledgable physician to you. By calling her/him, you can start to track down the kind of specialist you may need for this.
In the meantime, bioflavinoids are a type of vitamin that is available at any healthfood store. The problem is that they are heavily diluted before sale and so you have to read the lable carefully to get the purest stuff so it doesn't cost you so much to get the dose you need.

I would like to know what causes broken vessels in your eye. My father has on and it seems to happen when he is drinking a few beers. He will have one under his eyelid and then as he is drinking it looks like blood is running down his eyeball. What do you think is causing this?

Hi, Dorothy.
If this happened to me, I would take it as a message that the same thing was happening inside my body where I could not see it as easily---because it IS.
If that message is not loud enough for your father to find another (less dangerous) passtime, it is unlikey either of us have anything to offer.
Is there actually blood running over his eyeball? Does it get on a hankerchief? Does the white part of his eye get TOTALLY blood red and take several weeks to go away (turning colors like a bruise as it resoves?) Need more info about how dangerous this is or what to do about it.
How is his blood pressure? Is his vision gradually reducing? Does he have diabetes?
Walt
