eye discomfort in a 17 year old boy

Hi there,
My 17 year old son has had discomfort in his eyes for about 1 year.
Three doctors have said that he has blocked oil glands and that he
should be using hot compresses and eye gels. These remedies don't even
give him short term relief. He has trouble reading and he always looks
uncomfortable and blinks a lot. His vision is great, but we would like
some help here. It has been suggested to use an antibiotic eye ointment
for a few months, but we haven't tried that yet. Have you seen this
before in a young person and what should we do to help him find relief.
Thanks,
Rona
Toronto, Ontario

Hi Rona,
You say your son's vision is great. Does that mean that you have been to opthamologists? If not, that's where I would start. The doctors he has seen apparently do not know what is wrong with his eyes, right? What do they say when you tell them nothing is working and that he is still having problems? Does he wear glasses? We found that my oldest son's vision had changed as he started puberty.
Whatever it is, a good opthamologist would be able to tell you what is causing the eye-blinking and discomfort. I know how distressing it is when doctors don't help! Raisa

Yes, we've had him to an opthamologist and 2 optomitrists. They all had the same diagnosis, but were too stubborn to listen when we suggested that there might be something else that would work. Yes, it's so frustrating. Especially when your child is depending on you for answers!

"blocked oil glands" ? Try EFA's ...

Hi Rona. Essential oils may help with your son's blocked oil glands. As with acne, the EFA's thin out the sebum in the oil gland making it less likely to plug-up. Of course there are many other health benefits to EFA's. It may take a few months to get relief. I take a few tablespoons of flax oil every day. Good stuff.

Also, your son may have a nutritional deficiency of some kind. If you're looking for a good (non-ohip) holistic doc in Toronto, I recommend DR.Jaconello who specializes in nutrition/prevention.

Here's a link to read up on until Dr.Stoll resonds to your post.

I will call this man and wait for Dr. Stoll to confirm the EFA info. Are you in T.O.?

Hi, Rona - Does your son say his eye is painful? What symptoms does he tell you he has? Could his eye blinking be a habit by any chance? My son went through a time when he would do weird grimaces sometimes when he was nervous. That's the only other thing I can think of. He's seventeen, so he knows how his eyes feel. Do they itch, hurt, sting? How are his grades in school? Wish I could help you. Maybe Dr. Stoll will be able to tell you what the problem could be. Raisa

You may also want to consider a holistic opthamologist, if you can find one. Take a look in the yellow pages.

If you can't find one, I'm sure Dr.J would be a lot more advanced than the docs your son's been seeing. His service is not covered by ohip. My first 2 visits cost about $500. This included a physical, and blood, urine, stool, and hair testing and a few hours of the doc's time going over health-history, results of the tests and recommendations.

You should also read up on the eye-problem link I mentioned earlier. Dr. SToll frequently recommends Dr.Christopher's "Eye Bright" available in any health food store to relieve eye symptoms while you're looking for the cause of the problem.

Hi, Rona.

Well at least you can put these 3 docs on your "s--t" list.

I cannot believe you would not benefit from getting copies of ALL the medical records from all 3 docs and seeing another ophthalmologist (preferably at the nearest eye clinic of the medical school) with the records in your hand--do not trust them not to be lost in the clinic before he gets there. Let us know what you learn.

IF their suggestion that this is somehow related to his oil glands (I know of no oil glands in the eye.) is correct, the essential oils are the first thing I would try. Do you know how rare this is for a 17 year old? The second thing I would seriously consider is a strict wellness program for about a year. Of course, if your son is not willing to give that a good try, he may be telling you how much this REALLY bothers him.

Walt

Rona, are the oil glands along the eyelid, where it contacts the eye? I would occasionally get what appeared to be tiny clear bubble like pimples along my eyelid where the eyelashes grew, and that would make contact with my eye, irritating it. I haven't had any since starting the essential oils.
