Seeing dark spot in front of left eye

Posted by Sonja on March 21, 2002 at 07:06:57:

Dear Walt,
I almost started with a G'day, but then I thought, what a cliche - I'll go straight to the point and not brag about being in Oz :)

Before the infamous crash, I remember you answered someone with a similar question, but unfortunately I could not find the answer in the archives.

From beginning of February I have started noticing a dark spot in front of my left eye. I do have a few spots in each eye, and it seems as if I am actually seeing a projection of one them in front of my left eye. It is really annoying, especially when I read or write (and this is what I do a lot for the time being).

Unfortunately I could not find your answer to the last guy who asked in the archives. Is there anything I can do...should I see an eye specialist?

Hope you are doing well

Sonja

of the eye, affecting your central vision, but not your periphial vision? Get to an eye specialist asap to make sure it isn't macular degeneration.

It doesn't sound like what happened to me, loosing my
central vision in Both eyes. That was from my system
going acid from chemials and went right away when taking
bicarb for a rare case of heart burn.

Eyes are nothing to play with and your problem saounds more
severe or complicated so best to get it checked.

..of the eye, and not affecting my vision. I just see the spot.

I am aware of the degeneration you are talking about, but from what I have read, one takes a test, and it is on the test that the dot. And the test is taken after some loss of vision. I have no loss of vision, but I see a projection of a dark mark I have (always had) in the iris. It moves when the eye is moving, that's why it is so annoying.

In any case, I will check it up. Thanks for the concern.

Thanks, Vince.
What you described sounds tough, hope you have recovered some of the vision?
I will certainly check this up.

I wonder if you're talking about a floater. Does it move around as you move your eyes?

Hi again. I don't know what causes these. Maybe you could check the archives and the glossary and/or ask Walt to clarify. I think there were some posts on floaters, but they're gone since the board crashed.
All I know is that a lot of people have them and they are harmless unless you start getting a bunch of them. they are just these little black, different shaped specks that follow your vision when you move your eyes. I used to have quite a few of them, but they disappeared. Sorry i can't be of more help. Post this question directly to Walt, why don't you?

Hi, Sonja.

One way to indicate whether this is serious or not is to fix your vision on one spot on a light colored wall in a well lit room. IF, in your peripheral vision you notice the spot moving--while your eye is fixed on that spot, this is a floater and not serious. IF, however, it stays fixed, you need to see the eye doc ASAP since this could be dangerous.

Some possible diagnoses are: retinal detachment, microaneurysmal hemorrhages (Do you have diabetes?), an opacity of the lens, etc.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Thank you Walt.
I do not have diabetes.

It appears that the spot moves, but I think I'll see a doctor just in case.

Website on floaters (for archive purposes)

Just found this website, and thought I post it here, since this is getting archived.
BTW, they too recommend that we see an eye doctor when we first discover this, just to rule out serious disease.

I paste this address here,in case the link doesn't get activated, as it sometimes happens...

Floaters are degeneration of the gel substance that makes up your eye. It is similar to what happens to the egg whites when you cook them.
THere is still a lot of different viewe on what causes this. But it would make sense to take vitamins, bioflavinoids etc. in addition to lutein. eggs are also very good.
