trying to concieve and having no luck

Posted by Jon on April 09, 2002 at 09:36:02:

My wife is having a difficult time getting pregnant. I don't know if it's my fault or hers or what. We have been trying for 8 months now, the doc says don't even talk to me about it until it's been a year. We have tried ovulation tests but with no luck. Age should not be a factor she is 29 and I am 35. We are both fairly healthy, I take 2-3 grams of ester-C a day because I heard it's good for sperm count. Any advice would be appreciated.

The most common cause of infertility in men and women is undiagnosed hidden infection.

"Men and women can be infected with mycoplasma or ureaplasma (17A,17B), even though all available tests can't find them (18) and they may have no symptoms at all. A dipstick urine test may diagnose the infection (19,20). Semen from 91% of infertile men contains types of bacteria that grow without oxygen (21). Before infertile couples spend between $10,000 and $150,000 for infertility evaluations and treatments, they should ask their gynecologists to treat them with newer erythomycins, Zithromax (250 mg once a day for 8 days) or Biaxin (500 mg BID for 10 days), for chlamydia and mycoplasma infections (22,23)."

Hey, if you are both trying to concieve, then I would start by not asking who's, "fault", it is. Eight months really isn't that long, and better that you relax and enjoy each other, than stress out with a deadline.

Jon, we also had trouble conceiving. At the time, my husband and I were 25. Try not to buy into the "relax and it will happen" thing. My advice would be to seek a REPUTABLE AND EXPERIENCED infertility Dr. Why mess around with a reg. dr. when you can go through a infertility dr. and get answers w/in 1 mo. of testing. Most testing is non-invasive for both of you. My husband and I both had issues that were treated and now have a 10 year old and a 3 year old. Good luck!

Jon, Yes, this can be nerve wracking.
Does your wife know how to keep track of her ovulation. Fourteen days before the menstrual period, the ovary will release an egg. She may feel a sharp pain low in the abdomen when this happens. Her mucous discharge will change from patchy white to clear and stringy, like egg white. This is the signal that she is fertile.
(There is also a method to use that involves her taking her temperature each morning before she gets out of bed.)

Now for you. You want healthy, mature sperm to fertilize the egg. Plan intercourse for the second day before ovulation, the day of ovulation, and the second day after ovulation. Do not use a lubricant like KY gel, as it may interfere with conception. Do not masturbate in between, as the sperm needs time to mature. If you miss one of your planned sessions, try the next day.

I have read that sometimes men who wear briefs may inadvertantly cause the scrotum to be too warm, thus preventing the sperm from maturing properly. This can be solved by wearing boxer shorts. Using a hot tub may cause the same problem.

Sometimes problems conceiving are due to the woman's fallopian tubes being blocked. This might happen if she had an undiagnosed case of a sexually transmitted disease that caused scarring in the tubes. The ovary would still produce an egg, but the sperm would not be able to fertilize it.

Jackie has a good point. If your family doctor doesn't think this needs to be investigated yet, you can make an appointment with a doctor who specializes in infertility. That way both of you can be checked for possible problems.

I have listed some commonly known hints to aid conception, but an explanation by someone specifically trained to help couples conceive may answer more of your questions.

Good luck.

Don't forget to read the small but growing Fertility archive here. In it Walt will suggest serious wellness and reading Dr Paavo Airola's classic "Every Woman's Book".

Just to be clear: I don't think anyone should by into the, "just relax and it will happen" thinking either. What I mean is that blaming each other, or looking for someone to blame is a bad idea. If they have a problem, mistrusting each other won't help. I understand that the therapies can be very stressfull, better to undertake them with the feeling that, "we are in this together", than, "it's your/my fault." Also, eight months really isn't that long. My daughters are two years apart. There are a lot of things that can stall conception in "normal" couples. Breastfeeding, stress, medication; lots of things.
