fibromyalgia

i have been having the symptoms of fibromyalgia for about 5 months now. I am 15 yrs. old. I have been seeing a rheumatologist for about 4 months, and she has said that it looks like fibro, but every time i go she skips the subject and says keep exercising, becuase it helps. It sure doesn't feel like it helps, and she won't really tell me what's going on. I've read about it, but then i came here, and realized how much i don't know. What is S/R? do you really have to go on a special diet? Also, do you know anything that can help my pain and tiredness? The doctor has given me some muscle relaxers to help my new sleeping problem, but aspirin doesn't seem to work anymore, and it's getting hard to write, and play my clarinet. Also, recently i've been having a lot of muscle spasms in my hands and back, and the pressure points in my legs are unebarable. Also, I'm getting really depressed. I used to go to physical therapy, but now I do it at my house, and i exercise(treadmill, biking, & swimming) 3 times a week for half an hour. The doctor says it's good, but it hurts like heck, and i get soo tired about 5 minutes after i start. Can you give me some advice to help me get over this? I appreciate it.

I had severe muscle aches after simple physical activities
and in my case a multi vitamin cut the aches in half but
they would still last 4-5 days. Niacin cut the intensity and
duration and zinc would Almost completely eliminate them
within minutes and taking it before doing something it
would prolong the time before pains set in. Starting taking
MSM the pains Don't even start even when lifting weights as
heavy as I can lift though I still do hurt a good bit when
trying to move something that Won't budge like a frozen,
rusted bolt so I have to try to remember Not to push my
muscles That hard against an immovable object.

Sundown brand MSM seemed to be the one that helped my
muscle aches the most though Walmart's store brand seemed to
help some but more so with stamina and what is interesting
is that the zinc isn't needed at all now though I still
take it when I go out when it is really cold which it also
helped me Not feel it at all.

Vitamin Ester C helped me Need to exercise after taking it
like I had no control and I would Just Start without
thinking about it.

These are some things you might try but everyone could be
different. Like with me regular vitamin C did Nothing and
even made me feel bad.

Unless a Dr has the Same problem you do that can't
understand what you are dealing with or feeling. I have had
well meaning friends tell me that what I needed to do
was Exercise and I was Just out of shape and they Didn't
understand that exercising made me Not able to do what i had
to do and physical activity wasn't foreign to me since
though I was never much into an exerciser routine I did Very
physical things and even simple things to the max and would
make a simple job harder to get a workout from doing it so
I would feel drained after and with 2 hyper active hounds
and doing woodworking as a business and hobby plus liking
to build or repair everything I owned and even fixing things
for friends who didn't have a clue and playing tennis and
doing it as hard as I could and runing wind sprints before
playing to warm up, I Don't think I didn't know about
working out and exercising but when you Can't do it
because you hurt SO bad or Know you will after you save
yourself for things you have to or want to do.

I like when some say that when you feel good you shouldn't
push hard. Those times can be rare and fleeting so How do
you Not do things even if you know you will hurt after ??
I couldn't live like that and wouldn't want to. I don't
want to accept my limits. Maybe that is why they are geting
higher.

Hi Stef. It sounds like you are going through a really hard time in your life! Pain is difficult to deal with even for us old adults....:O)

It takes 48 hours for Dr. Stoll to respond to the board. I'm a mom with experience of some health knowledge... But first I have a few questions for you. There are some areas that can help you along. The first one is your diet. ARe your parents willing to help you with your diet, byeing the food and such that you will need? Are you at that place that your willing to change your diet and maybie drastically?
Are your parents willing to let you go the natural road with herbs and vitamens? Because of your age you will need that support. You will also get lots of support from this board. People are very helpful and knowledgable with information to help you along the road to healing your body.

I just want to encourage you. There is hope for you! I have read encouraging posts on this board from other people who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and have had good results from all the changes they have made. It does take time!!!
Take care
Barb

Thanks so much for responding!!! i don't know if my parents would be willing to help me change anything because the doctor hasn't said it, esp. if it's just off a website, but they probably would, if it would help me feel better. i would be more than willing to change anything to make myself feel normal. What kind of changes to my diet would i have to make? They would also probably let me take herbs and vitamens, because they take them too, but what kind? someone else who responded said MSM works great, but what's that? I want to say thanks, because it feels like i'm in this alone, and my parents aren't very supporting. All they say is, "that happens to people all the time", and when i ask them why their not supporting me, they say, "we drive you to the doctors, and we buy you the stuff you need (physical therapy & tens unit). But they don't understand that i need mental support, because right now, it feels like i'm going to crash. Thank you sooo much for the encouragement!!!

Stef, I sympathize with you. Health can be a complicated issue and you can read Dr. Stoll's Topics and get a general idea of what goes wrong. Regular doctors will not tell you these things because they are only trained to treat diseases with drugs. Dr. Stoll gets to the root causes which are pretty much the same underlying problems. You are so young that I am thinking your problem may be triggered by a food sensitivity. The most common is wheat, dairy, corn. Do you think you could avoid them for about a week and see if it makes a difference? MSM is a sulphur supplement. It does help some people and is safe. SR means skilled relaxation. It is a method to bring your brain into a total relaxed state (15 min./twice a day) to get rid of the stress that creates a whole mess of physical problems. Check Dr. Stoll's list of topics which includes fibromyalgia.

Stef,

Like Dr's parents don't always understand. My mother who
used to be intelligent suffers badly and probably some Very
simple things might make her better while the meds she takes
are known to cause the bad side effects she has.

Since you are on the net you should search Every possible
solution for your problems and MAY find an answer. MSM is
easy to look up and read about and you can see if you think
it might help you. I did and IT did tremendously. Not
everything works for everyone even with the same or similar
problems. The more reading you do the more you will
understand and hopefully you will be able to figure out what
May help or what is wrong. It may seem like a puzzle but if
you hurt That bad relieving the pains is well worth the
effort and the satisfaction and knowledge you gain will help
in many ways when you don't feel you are stuck with a
problem and no one can help or understand. Things like that
build confidence that you can handle and solve problems that
even puzzle the experts.

MSM is methyl sulphonyl methane. Are you glad you asked?
It is said to be an item that is in very fresh foods that
is lost as they are or are cooked or processed and can help
many problems. I am not sure what it does since it seems
like it can do a Lot but not for everyone and different
brands have helped different things in me and that is a
puzzle but I Won't complain since the things they helped
are gone or almost and to a point that I can function very
well or just take them again.

Read everything you can...

Your really doing great Stef just by being here and checking to see what you can do naturally!!! Hang in there. Even if all this information seems overwhelming at first all these people and Dr. Stoll will help you take the information you are getting and help you get started. Sometimes you just dont even know what to do first....:O) I felt like that when I started here on this board. As Sally said beginning to do research is a great step. Its really important to know this info for yourself. Vince and others will be sharing with you different herbs and vitamens that have helped them in their journey. Dr. Stoll suggests the 3 legged stool to you. SR, Diet and exercise.
Just wondering before you came down with fibromyalgia, did you go through a REALLY stressful time? I know from my own daughters lives, that teen years can be extremely stressful. How has your digestion been before and during this time? I would also suggest going totally off of sugar, caffine, corn and wheat, flour. That leaves you with veggies, fruit, meats, and brown rice. Also, I know this would be really hard, but you might want to cut out dairy products just to see if you feel any better too.(I know, I can hear you now. YUCK>>>>> but I'm a teenager.....)It all depends on how bad you want to get better. If you go to a health food store you can get books just with recipies and diets with the food I suggested. AND I repeat these are just suggestions.
Keep writing, dont get discouraged. Keep asking questions.
Take Care Barb

my parents had a fit when i mentioned the diet to them! i didn't even try to mention the different vitamins & herbs. They think i got the idea from a bunch of people who don't even know what their talking about. They said i can't even try it until summer,, if i even pass it through the doctor!
they think it's going to interfere with my medication. Before i got this problem, i wasn't that stressed, but when i started having problems with my hands, i had to go to the doctors and get blood tests every week, and go to all these different places, and that totally stressed me out! it got totally worse after that, and spread quickly. In the middle of january, i was naseous for 2 or 3 weeks, but it went away after i stopped taking naprosen, so i think it was a side effect. I'm already doing exercise, and i'll try s/r, and definitely try to convince my parents! i'll try and talk to them again, & thanx for all your help!! I

Hi Stef,
Well, if that diet scares them Stef, how about just eliminating sugar and white flour from your diet? Thats and easy one and just those 2 things could help you alot!
There are alot of things you can do without alarming your parents. Drink spring water instead of sodas. (2 qts a day if you can) Eat fruits and veggies instead of sugar snacks.
Try to get away from chips........things like that. Even that would help you out.
Take Care!

Stef, at the top of the BB page, there is a search box with health topics that drop down. One is Fibromyalgia. Why don't you ask your parents to read it. Dr. Stoll is extremely knowledgeable about both ends of the health spectrum from conventional to alternative. It will not interfere with your medication, unless you become healthy again and don't need it any longer.

Stef, has anyone answered your question yet? It is so far down the bulletin board I accidently ran into your post so probably won't be seen by anyone. If you check SR in the archives you will find info. It is a method you use to relieve all the built up stress in your body. You have to get your brain to a certain "quiet" state to let this stress "out". Some people use cd's or tapes with certain sounds. You can practice until you can attain it, some just use breathing exercises. You can go to a workshop or you can get a book Dr. Stoll recommends, a stress management workbook.
