Dr. Stoll, Recently my mother, who is 74 took a vacation to New Zealand. On the plane on the return trip she became very ill. At first we thought it might just be jet lag. She said she ate sushi on the plane also. After two weeks back home she was becoming much worse and had terrible pain in her shoulders and pelvic area primarily. She could not function and wasn't sleeping at all she was in such pain. The doctor suspected polymyalgia rheumatica after a couple other tries, and prescribed steriods. The pain was nearly gone in a matter of 10 hours. She can now sleep and is almost ready to resume her daily walks. We are concerned about the side effects of this treatment. I believe the drug is prednisone. Is there a substitute for this and what else can you tell us about this condition? Thank you

Hi,Jeff.
ALL rheumatic conditions have the same basic causes. See the arthritis archives and all of the associated archives.
ALSO, since this started so suddenly, and under such circumstances, parasites are the most likely TRIGGER for her present condition. See the archives for parasites.
Let us know what you learn and, if you THEN have more questions, write again.
Walt

One thing to consider that airplanes are being heavilly sprayed with pesticides!
This could be a severe reactiion to pesticides!
