So far, it appears there are far more research papers and abstracts raising concerns than there are studies and data demonstratnig safety. Thanks for taking a reasoned position on this topic and providing data that is not forthcoming from either EPA or ADA. In light of the EPA's own internal squabling over fluoride saftey during the time that William Marcus was Senior Science Advisor there, I can't imagine how public outrage would not have righted this tragedy long ago. What can we do?

Dear Peter,
I've attached my fluoride facts presentation. The references are not exhaustive but complete enough that most could reach a fair conclusion. I've been trying as hard as I can to get others to help fight this government/industry sponsored menace. I can't understand why others haven't jumped on this problem with me. Perhaps they are afraid of being called bad names. I guess as the youngest of three boys I've grown accustomed to the antics of those who have nothing of value to say. The reason that you can't get references from the ADA or EPA is they have none.
The whole fluoridation scheme is a PR bluff based upon junk science and speculation. The ADA expert testified in court as early as 1977 that she was not aware of any broad based double-blind study that has ever found a significant reduction in permanent tooth decay from drinking 1 ppm fluoride in the drinking water. End of question. They don't have any research to support this scam. But they do have 250 million dollars a year to hire spin artists and PR people who fly to your community at the drop of a hat to BS their way through the city halls of this country.
I've attached a partial draft of my 1,2,3 talk. It goes on for another 40 slides but I often show only the first 1,2,3 points in the 3 or so minutes I get to speak.
In 1995 when I spoke before the California Assembly Health Committee I discussed dental fluorosis in detail. The ADA spokesperson Michael w. quickly jumped up to refute my statements and claimed in a loud and forceful way that "water fluoridation doesn't cause dental fluorosis." I was not given an opportunity to refute his claims and the mandatory fluoridation bill for 35 million Americans was passed. Politics is the main problem with fluoridation. It is all politics.
We can use any help you can give. Time money contacts.
Fluoride's Proven Effects
Slide #1
This Power Point Presentation has been prepared to help others talk about the effects of water fluoridation on the health of their local community. Scientific references from the peer reviewed literature to support the basis of these graphics are provided below.
Although some have called artificial fluoridation controversial, I find that it is a very easy subject to understand. It is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1) Does fluoride work to reduce tooth decay if swallowed?
No
2) Is it safe for babies?
No
3) Is it FDA approved?
No
A simple as 1,2,3.
Slide #2 & 3 Point 1
There is almost unanimous agreement in the scientific community today that if fluoride has an impact of tooth decay it is by topical mechanisms and not via systemic ingestion as was once believed. Dr. Featherstone in his July 2000 article about on fluoride and tooth decay reminded every dentist and reader of the American Dental Association Journal that the level of fluoride in saliva or incorporated into the enamel from ingesting fluoridated water is insufficient to have a measurable impact on tooth decay. The fact that fluoride has only a topical effect is recognized on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) web page . Like sun block. You put it on the skin's surface but you don't drink it.
Proponents of fluoridation now contend that the fluoride in drinking water has a topical effect on the enamel. Dr. Hardy Limeback, Professor of Preventive Dentistry in Toronto suggests that the appropriate use for fluoridated water would therefore be to swish it around tour mouth and then spit it out.
(Footnote: Discussed in detail in Colquhoun J. Flawed foundation: A re-examination of the scientific basis for a dental benefit from fluoridation. Community Health Studies 14 288-296 1990)
Slide #5 & 6
This child has severe dental fluorosis. It is a structural defect in the enamel that weakens the tooth makes it crack, break and wear out prematurely. It is caused only by ingested fluoride in children. Adults do not develop dental fluorosis. They develop skeletal fluorosis.
Fluoridation causes dental fluorosis and all sources of fluoride intake are cumulative. However, water fluoridation causes dental fluorosis more often than toothpaste and all the other fluoride exposures combined . The graph displayed here is from the 1987 National Institute of Dental Research survey of 39,000 children in 84 communities. As you can see the amount of dental fluorosis this very profluoride government research body found went up directly proportional to the amount of fluoride in the drinking water.
The raw data found 66% of the children in the fluoridated communities had at least one tooth with dental fluorosis. So they decided to not count the children with only one tooth scarred by fluoride. They then took the classification of the second most severely damaged tooth to claim that most of the children suffered only mild or very mild dental fluorosis. Still 29.9% of the children raised in a fluoridated community have two or more teeth showing visible scaring of the enamel.
Slides 7 & 8 (mild and very mild dental fluorosis)
Fluoride appears to impact some subsets of the population more severely especially the African American and Hispanic. Early studies of fluoridation found twice as much dental fluorosis in African American children than their Caucasian counterparts . That fact alone makes water fluoridation a racist policy.
The proponents of fluoridation contend that dental fluorosis is merely a cosmetic defect. This argument fails for many reasons. Dentist are paid to fix cosmetic defects therefore cosmetic damage is by definition also economic harm. For example if I spilled a bucket of paint on your new BMW, would you agree that a mere cosmetic defect was of no concern? Or would you demand that I pay for the damage to the appearance of your vehicle? In California the Department of Health has determined that dental fluorosis could also damage the child's self image and thus would be psychological harm as well.
Slide 9 Point 2
"Infants receiving substantial quantities of infant formula generally should not use powder or liquid concentrate if water fluoride levels are near optimal or above, since the water fluoride alone might exceed total, recommended daily levels."
The English translation for the rest of us; Don't make up fluoridated tap water formula for babies. They will get dental fluorosis. Breast milk has virtually no fluoride and thus the longer an infant is breast fed the less likely they are to develop dental fluorosis.
It the Wall Street journal the CDC fluoride promoters took the dental fluorosis rate for the fluoridated areas and averaged that with the dental fluorosis rate from the non-fluoridated areas to claim that only 22% of the children now suffer from dental fluorosis. Isn't that cheating?
Slide 10
The child in this slide swallowed Colgate toothpaste. All toothpaste in the United states must give the following warning, "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 6. Use only a pea sized amount. If the amount used in brushing is swallowed seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately." Did you read about this accident in your local newspaper? Of course not. Newspapers seldom print articles about the negative side effects of ingested fluoride, but the manufacturers liability is clear.
Slide 11
When confronted by Wall Street Journal reporter Tara Parker-Hope the fluoridation promoters made an astounding admission, "There probably is excess exposure to fluoride..."
Slide 12
"A recent national study found that 22% of U.S. children have some form of fluorosis. Bleaching can't fix it. Dentists often use expensive veneers to cover the teeth."
You might ask how they arrived at just 22% incidence of fluorosissince. I just showed you evidence of a much higher level of dental fluorosis in fluoridated communities. They averaged the amount of dental fluorosis from unfluoridated communities with that found in fluoridated communities to lower the apparent incidence of this condition. That's supposed to be science?
Slide 13 & 14 Point 3.
By 1975 the Food and Drug Administration had rejected 35 new drug applications for fluoride/vitamin combinations stating, "There is no substantial evidence of drug effectiveness as prescribed, recommended, or suggested in labeling."
Slide 15 & 16
"At the present time there are no new drug applications on file."
Slide 17 & 18
American Academy of Pediatrics
A) Now recommends no prescription fluoride before age of 6 months.
B) After 6 mo. To 3 yr. when all other sources are considered deficient, only 0.25 mg/day. Equivalent to just one cup of fluoridated water.
C) Human breast milk contains almost no fluoride or less than 0.05 PPM
D) Research shows that breast-fed infants are smarter and healthier than bottle-fed.
Slide 19
Water fluoridation delivers a drug to infants at a level which is malpractice if prescribed by a physician!
It is as easy as 1,2,3
Not effective swallowed. Not FDA approved and Not safe for the baby.
My facts below
FACT #1 Fluoride is more toxic than lead, and just like lead, even in minute doses, accumulates in and is damaging to brain/mind development of children, i.e. produces abnormal behavior in animals and reduces IQ in humans.
FACT #2 Fluoridation with hydrofluosilic acid, used in 90% of fluoridated water, increases the blood lead levels in children dramatically. Minorities like the black or Hispanic children are more severely affected. The increased lead levels are responsible for increased violence, crime, and learning disorders. Hydrofluosilic acid (HFSA) is untreated hazardous waste from the pollution scrubbers of the phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plants.
FACT #3 Fluoridation is cancer-causing, cancer-promoting, and is linked to increased cancer rates in rats, mice, and humans. Dr. William Marcus, Senior Science Advisor at the office of Drinking Water, stated unequivocally in his May Day Memo that fluoride is a carcinogen.
Full text of the memo available 800-728-3833
FACT #4 Numerous studies, including four published in the Journal of the American Medical Association since 1990, have found that hip fracture rates are substantially higher in people residing in fluoridated communities ..
FACT #5 Dental fluorosis, the first visible sign of fluoride poisoning, affects from 8% to 51% of the children drinking fluoridated water and has substantially increased over the last 40 years . Dental fluorosis is more than cosmetic damage with psychological harm. It is also indicative of neurological impairment (See ref. C 3 Dr. Li) Pictures at http://www.members.home.net/davidkennedy-dds/index.htm
FACT #6 All of the recent large-scale studies on fluoridation and tooth decay show that fluoridation does not reduce tooth decay . Studies from New Zealand, Canada, Europe, and the US have confirmed no difference in decay
rates for permanent teeth of residents of fluoridated vs. non-fluoridated communities.
FACT #7 Fluoride drops and tablets are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe or effective. Ingested fluoride has no detectable effect on decay rates. Fluoride tablets and drops have been shown to be ineffective in reducing tooth decay and to cause skin eruptions, gastric distress, headache, and weakness - which disappear when fluoride use is discontinued - as well as dental fluorosis, a permanent disfigurement.
The official recommendations for fluoride 'supplement' use has declined dramatically worldwide except in the US. All fluorides work 'topically', by coming in contact with tooth surfaces in the oral cavity. Even fluoride lozenges have not been shown to be very effective in treating dental decay.
FACT #8 Fluoride causes iodine deficiency which can result in hypothyroidism and frequently in hyperthyroidism. Fluorides were prescribed to patients suffering from hyperthyroidism as anti-thyroid medication prior to 1950. Fluoride exposure may exacerbate iodine deficiency. During pregnancy, when iodine requirements are at their peak, the fetus is especially vulnerable. Even a slightly underfunctioning thyroid gland can result in loss of IQ in the newborn.
The following warning is required an all fluoridated toothpaste by the FDA since April of 1997 due to the large number of calls to the Poison Control Centers for children who became acutely ill from ingested fluoride. There is approximately 1 milligram of fluoride in a pea sized drop of toothpaste.
WARNING: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center immediately.

Peter B. Thanks for posting that, but Peter like I said before in a previous post, I do not know what is happening but you can show this to the politicians and they are all against it until the vote comes up, then they are for it. I have my own opinion of what is happening, but I would like to hear from others why the switch?. Keep up the good work. Good luck

This is how I see it.
A politician's standard answer to anything is "Sounds serious, I'll look into it," or something similar. Politicians rarely promise to do something they might not end up doing, yet they don't want to admit up-front that they don't plan on making whatever changes they are being requested to make.
When it comes time to vote on, or initiate, the actual bill, there are several reasons why the politician might not do what he said he would.
1) The bill goes against his true beliefs.(this rarely comes into play).
2) His party or faction would kill him if he did.(This wouldn't really apply to fluoride).
3) A significant fraction of his constituents are against the bill.
4) He owes a favor to some special interest groups that would be harmed by the bill.
So, I think the answer to the fluoride question is either 3 or 4. A few people have said they believe the answer is 4, and that the industries that supply the sodium fluoride to the cities have the politicians in their "back pockets." It would be interesting to find out just what kind of monetary exchange is taking place between these two groups.

Dave, it appears to be a virtually "dead" issue due to lack of public knowledge. Personally, if it were just about public drinking water, I wouldn't be so bothered. I drink spring water anyway. But this material (infused with aluminum, arsenic, radon and lead) is contaminating ORGANIC foods due to irrigation with treated water. Unfortunately, the growers are in no position to assure the absence of artificial fluoride in their produce. Laws affecting organic labeling do not require agriculture to be free of artifical fluorides, and I'm not aware of produce certified to be cultivated using completely natural waters. [If anyone has information on this, please let me know!] A tomatoe certified "organic" may contain 50-150mcg of artificial fluoride. That means an organic tomatoe could contain aluminum, lead, arsenic, or even radon in high amounts. Many growers are probably not aware of the level of contamination taking place through fluoridation. If they are, there isn't much they can do about it without circumventing their immediate water supplies. The bottom line is that Americans are being deceived about public waters infused with this toxin. Fluoride is strongly implicated in cancer, hypothyroidism, alzheimers, osteoporosis, reduction of intelligence in children, fractures in the elderly, and other diseases. The phosphate and nuclear industries are celebrating free "waste disposal" in America at the expense of the general public. As the man said, "Follow the money, you'll find the truth."

cd, I agree. The money trail always leads to well-kept secrets. In the near future, I want to post a protocol for raising concerns about fluoridation to public officials for those interested. Thanks and stay tuned.

Peter B. I hope you keep researching and digging into this, because what you have said I know to be true in my opinion. There are lots of organic products in my opinion being sold that should be classified natural. A good friend of mine just went thru the difference between organic and natural in his business and there is a bunch. He was going to have to put a distiller for making pure water to qualify for raising organic product. He is still selling natural product. His product would have had to go up in price 15 times for him to go from natural to organic. good luck

CD, The average person can not follow the money cause it is done with cash or thru a third and sometimes fourth party. What is so funny is that in two cases that we have seen a pro person will get a new car with a lake house and and not deny it is his within 6 days of election. I'm sorry but that does just not look to be proper. Good luck

My older son's permanent teeth that have come in so far grew in yellowish. Now I am certain this is due to the prescribed chewable fluoride tablets that the pediatrician had him taking for quite some time.
