and broke my nose on Sunday.
It was quite a surprise...and very painful. I looked like Wayne Gretzky until it swelled up. Now I just look beat up and bad...
Anyone have any suggestions about anything to do with broken noses? I never broke anything before.
Apparently, "they" no longer set broken noses right away...we are to wait until the swelling goes down to see what if anything need to be done. I am certain that this will need to be straightened out, since it really did look crooked...the xrays showed the bones aren't even touching right now. They did stitch up two small cuts in the bridge of my nose, warning that as it swelled, it would pull the cuts open more and cause worse scarring.
I was also given the infamous tetanus shot, vicodin and levaquin along with an antibiotic ointment to help lessen scarring.
I've been icing since it happened and think that has helped a lot. I still have not returned to work since I experience increased pain and swelling with too much (or any) activity.
I have an appointment on Thursday with an ENT/Plastic surgeon.
Any input?
thanks

Hi Labrat, sorry to hear the news about your nose! How painful! Your little mouse doesn't look the same.

Arnica can help with bruising/swelling: either taken internally or
applies as an ointment (it is usually mixed with witchhazel).
Alternately, you could make a poultice out of tumeric paste.
Combine tumeric with hot water and then put it on gauze or cotton
and apply it to your nose. Lots of calcium and keeping your
immune system in tiptop shape should be a given.
Bromelain also helps reduce swelling and inflammation - if you
can eat pineapple, that's a good source, if you can't I think you can
get it in pill form.

Hi labrat, hope you were doing something fun at least when you broke your nose!
John Christopher used an herbal formula he calls Bone, Flesh and Cartilage for broken bones, tissue repair, skin repair etc. You can read about and order it here http://www.herbsfirst.com/NewsLetters/0798bfc1998.html, or you can make it yourself (recipe below).
******************************************
from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Herbal_Remedies/files/Dr.%20Christopher/B%20F%20%26%20C%20Tincture%20Recipe
It's called BF&C (Bone, Flesh and Cartilage) and I recommend using
it with my Deep Tissue Repair Oil. It is the Dynamic Duo for Broken
Bones, Torn Cartilage, and Bruises ETC.
Much love,
Ian
The BF&C Formula is as follows.
6 parts Comfrey Root
6 parts Oak Bark
3 parts Gravel Root
3 parts Mullein
1 part Lobelia
2 parts Wormwood
3 parts Marshmallow Root
1 parts Skullcap
2 parts Walnut Bark
Remember, when I discuss a "part", I am always talking about
"volume". If I use another measurement such as cups ETC., I
always say so.
Ian "Doc" Shillington
**************************************
Take the bf&c formula internally, as in capsules, and also using compresses on the nose.
Another thing you can try are comfrey compresses, in which you make a strong infusion of comfrey leaves (fresh if possible), soak a cloth/bandage in the infusion, then leave it on your nose for as long as possible, constantly keeping wet.
happy healing

Labrat,
So sorry to hear of your little accident. I've had enough little accidents for one person myself. Not even going to ask how you managed to get a broken nose.
You're likely going to get bruised eyes, however, maybe you'll luck out. Icing it on and off IMHO and experience will greatly help out the swelling. You might take the arnica tablets which you put under your tonque for the pain, and gently put some of the arnica gel on you nose making certain not to get it in your eyes, to deminish the possible bruising and swelling.
Hang in there kiddo and be very careful NOT to bump your nose on anything else.

I'm also sorry because I don't have any experience with this or any advice to help you out. Constant Icing (like you and others have said) seems like it might be the only thing you can do now. (and keeping your head up as high as possible, and staying still to minimize blood flow). If I were in your shoes I imagine I would be tempted to try to "move" things into position myself... But that's probably TERRIBLE advice, and you probably can't stand to move your nose at all right now anyway. Any chance you could get a second opinion from another doctor? Also, I've always been told by docs that advil reduces swelling. Not sure if it's applicable here, but if they told you to take advil for swelling, then I would probably take it liberally. (not a natural remedy, I know...)
I'm really sorry! let us know how things go... and keep your spirits up. I broke my front teeth a few years back. It may seem terrible for a while, but everything will be back to normal in no time.
:) Wendy

Sorry, labrat.
So long as the bone is set within 10 days, waiting until the swelling is down is a very good idea.

By the way, labrat.
If I had this, I would be using (50%)topical DMSO several times a day to get rid of the black eyes and reduce the swelling.

Oh Girlfriend! Sorry to hear about your Nose! What were you doing noising around!Ha!
I'll keep you in the healing light and see total perfection, that is the area with this situaltion that I feel my I can offer you the most. I tell you i really feel Walt idea and Ian is a great one with the DMSO-or the John Chirstopher product, it felt good!

I will certainly try your suggestions. Walt, do you think the DMSO is safe around the eyes? bruising is oddly scattered all over my face. I was so lucky that my hubby insisted on the ice right away. Those who have seen broken noses before say that my swelling isn't bad at all. I went to the doc today and they "set" it, which consisted of sticking a butter-knife type thing up each nostril and pushing/pulling the whole nose back to where it felt straight. I was numbed up pretty good, but psychologically, it was pretty hard to handle. I could hear things I never want to hear again!! And, of course it feels like I broke it all over again.
Any way, I think between all of your suggestions, I can make this a quick recovery, and hopefully this procedure lined me up well enough that I won't have to have any further work done.
Take care everyone,

You would NOT try to move it yourself...you can't imagine what that crunching sound/feeling does to you. I tried to blow my nose to clear it of blood right when this first happened, and just touching it that little bit made it shift and I nearly fainted! At least in the doc's office I was already in a chair!!!
Thanks for your good wishes

Hi Labrat,
Jeez! sorry to hear about your nose. Remember next time, if you insist on chasing cars, make sure they are not parked!
I don't have any advice but I will wish you good luck with your recovery, and here's hoping you return to your gorgeous self soon.
get well,

Labrat,
Still so sorry you're having to go through this just before the holidays. You're still lucky as it could've been far worse.
You've still got to be careful even though your nose is set. That reminds me of last week. I heard sounds during that tooth procedure which I NEVER want to hear again either. First time one side of my nose felt as if it wasn't part of my face as well. At one point looked as if I'd had a stroke with one side of my mouth hanging down due to the novacaine. YUCK!!! I'm fine now, and want to be sure that you don't take things for granted and re-injure yourself. Might need to try to sleep on your back in order for you not to hit your nose on the bed, sheets, or pillow while you sleep.
Good luck and try to TAKE IT EASY.

Thanks, labrat.
I would keep DMSO out of my eyes for the same reason I am careful not to get soap in my eyes during a shower--not because it could damage my eyes.

Hi, labrat.
Blowing your nose when it has been broken is NOT a good idea. I am surprised that all the docs did not tell you that! It can blow nasal bacteria directly into the brain.

In Reply to: O, Wendy. The only real danger from a broken nose. Archive in functional anatomy posted by Walt Stoll on October 18, 2002 at 17:35:59:
but they did not tell me that anyway...in fact the one on Thursday gave me the go ahead! HE blew a bunch of stuff up my nose really hard to numb it before doing the closed reduction...plus there was so much crusty dried stuff that I couldn't help blowing it once in awhile...though I did blow gently because it hurt to blow it hard.
They did give me an antibiotic. The doc prescribed it for 14 days, but I'm not sure I'll do the whole time. I am putting myself at risk for a yeast infection and I've healed so well so far that I'm not convinced that 14 days is really necessary.
The break happened last Sunday and the reduction on Thursday...today is Friday, so it's been 5 days since the initial break. Swelling is nearly gone and except for a couple of black spots on my cheeks, I look fairly normal. the arnica gel and DMSO should help wiht that!
I am still a bit miffed that they didn't set it right away. I was in limbo and so much more pain for those 4 days! Now it feels like there's an end to this.
Anyway, I'll certainly be more careful about blowing!
Thanks as alway, Walt.

Hi Labrat,
Glad to see you are doing better. From my lay knowledge, i would advise to take the whole course of antibiotics. They say that you really run a risk of not getting all of the bugs and the few that remain can become super bugs. Perhaps some probiotics in between taking the anti-b pills might help.
By the way is it "lab rat", "L.A. brat" or "la brat" is some Spanish sense?
be well,

Thanks, labrat.
Your docs did it right about not setting the nose at once.
You need to stop being "miffed" about that.
Namaste`

I intended it to be "lab rat" since I've experimented on myself (and been experimented on) so much, hence my little signature graphic...someone did call me "la brat" once and it really cracked me up since of course, I didn't didn't see it that way since mean it that way! I am pretty funny that way sometimes. I think I'm so observant! I guess if I'm being a brat....
I know about taking the whole course of antibiotics, but 14 days? I've been on 7 day courses and 10 day courses before. I don't know if "bugs" are even there...I don't have an active infection so it's preventive. It's been 7 days already. Like I said, I'm on the verge of a yeast infection...that's not good either! I had candida before in my gut and REALLY don't want to go that road again. I do take probiotics now...what's a rat to do?
Thanks for your interest, Sounder.
