Excessive Flatulence

Posted by HotPants on November 26, 2002 at 10:28:19:

Hi,

I have been through the Flatulence Archives from which I deduce that I am not digesting proteins well and it is putrefying in the gut. This sounds disgusting!

However, this putrefaction must be happening pretty quickly because I start blowing almost straight after lunch and it seems to go on all day. Also, it doesn't seem to matter what I eat.

The archives say I should try an increase fiber, but I'm not sure what to eat because I don't eat grain at all except for two slices of organic wholemeal toast with organic butter for breakfast. I don't want to start eating other grains as well because I understand it's not good for you.

What should I cut out. I eat meat and vegetables or fish and vegetables most days and I have started taking probiotics just yesterday. How do I get rid of the rotten bacteria in the gut and how did it get there in the first place?

Thanks.

You're a man, right? :-) I am so quiet in that department,I thought I HAD a problem.

Take those probiotics, make sure its a good quality probiotic, not some cheapie, and watch out for that cabbage. that can be real bad! (just some silly humour!)

Do you like yoghurt? Get the unpasteurized version? Do you think you could tolerate goats milk yoghurt that would be even better. I am told yoghurt works well. Also, chlorophyll is good at deodorizing the body.
If you are making a home cooked meal, say something like beans :), add fresh cube of ginger to it whilst the beans/lentils are cooking. It helps the body digest the food better. Also, make sure you rinse the lentils/beans first before cooking. Then boil up briefly, empty that water, and use fresh water to boil them up.

I wonder why its mainly men that suffer from this wretched problem? My husband thinks its because I am feminine that he doesnt hear um, hear from me, but its just that its not there to begin with, or very rarely. :) Have you always suffered with excess flatulence?

Do you notice particularly after eating red meat, sausages etc, that you have this problem? I noticed it with my husband, and told him so, and he now rarely eats it (his choice),and rarely has a problem with flatulence.

Fiber doesnt necessarily have to be be grains. What about psyllium husks? Anyway, fiber passes thru the body as it cleans you out, so you dont have to worry. And yes, watch the grains, and eat more easily digestible foods.

Have you by chance, been on antibiotics recently? Maybe part of the reason for a disturbance in the bacteria in your gut.

Hope that helps some.

Namaste

Thanks. No I haven't been on antibiotics. I have always had a bit of a gas problem, but it seems to have got worse lately. There is a good post from Rick in the archives and he says it flatulence may be due to LGS but I wondered if there was any food I should avoid. As undigested protein seems to be the problem, should I cut out protein? Seems a bit drastic.

Thanks. I will try and get some goats milk yogurt. No, I'm not a man. Also, it stinks to high heaven - sometimes worse than a man!

Not necessarily protein....

Just from my own experience, I stopped having gas problems when I quit grains, not protein. I think heavy starches cause problems for me.

You need to test *your own* body with the foods you eat. Try cutting bread and grains first. See how that works. If it doesn't help, then experiment with cutting meat, etc.

It may be a combination of foods that is causing this for you...it could be that if you don't mix your carbs with proteins, you will get relief.

Also, try to pay attention to what you eat and what gives the worst gas...garlic and certain spices in combination with too many starches/carbs do it to me and onions are really bad too.

We are all different and need to find our own magical solutions to our problems! Certainly a probiotic and/or enzyme supplement will help, but I bet it's a simple matter of figuring out which foods are not agreeing with you.

Good luck!

Try eating just the meat (mono) and the veggies two or three hours later, which is much better for digestion. It may take a little getting use to but your tummy will thank you. * Rick *

Could also be the wheat. Whether it's organic or not, it's still wheat. Many people get flatulance from wheat and wheat products. Not to say that you don't have LGS though. Carol

Hi, HotPants.

The "gastrocolic reflex" is stimulated by eating--that is why babies so frequently have a movement right after eating and why it is a good idea, when housetraining a dog, to put them outside right after they have eaten.

I know you do not think that what you have eaten gets to the colon so quickly.

Your dysbiosis (archives) is how the bad bacteria got established. Your problem is LGS and anything less will not resolve it. Your probiotics may help for a while (depending upon how far along your LGS is) but you must make the colonic ecology friendly for the good bacteria for them to set up housekeeping.

Study the LGS (leaky gut syndrome) article on the home page and then the archives until you begin to understand the process. Go to the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

I'm in my late thirties and had flatulence problems for as long as I can remember.
About 3 years ago I started taking pancreatin enzymes once a day with dinner. Ever since I starting taking the enzymes I stopped getting the bloating and cramping. It's wonderful to eat and not be in pain afterwards. Now I'm wondering what Dr. Stoll will say - I hope enzymes are o.k. to take.

I have a lack of flatulence. I know, lucky me! :)

But I got to thinking is this a sign of good health. I hardly ever get bloated or get the ole flatulence problemo.
Does that mean my digestion is good? I do have candida though. I am always reading about someones problem with bloating and flatulence, but not the reverse.

I agree that a person can react badly to grains, flours, etc. When I had intestinal problems with gas and cramping, I tried changing my diet but tried the basic stuff first like broccoli, cabbage, garlic, etc. I finally was tested and had a gluten intolerance which lead to Celiac's disease. I had never heard of this but turns out that the gluten ingestion over the years had caused my intestine to suffer damage. I had been anemic for 20 years and now have some bone loss. Because of the intestinal damage, I wasn't absorbing my nutrients in addition to all the discomfort and embarassment. Hope this helps.

After eating a McDonald's Big Mac, I have often felt "Mt. St. Helens" erupting in my sphincter area.
