Teething/loose stools

Posted by Jennifer [18.209] on April 06, 2004 at 22:44:38:

What causes children to get loose stools when they get teeth coming in? I have a 4 year old who has cut 2 of her 6 year old molars, and has had loose stools 3 times daily for a couple weeks. She says her tummy will hurt and then this is usually when she has a b.m. Does teething make them lactose intolerant like when they get a stomach bug or is it just the teeth?

Hi, Jennifer.

Teething stimulus is directly hooked into the "gastro-colic reflex" which is much more sensitive in infants and children.

Is this your first child?

Since I wrote my response to your question, within 3 hours she has had a b.m. once after lunch, and 3 more times. Filled the toliet the 1st time, and less the other times. It's very soft but not quite diarrhea.
