For Walt, question on heart attack and stroke

Posted by Mary [4646.6457] on February 23, 2009 at 00:21:05:

Hi Walt,

Both of my parents had heart disease, my father died suddenly of a
myocardio infarction. In 2005 during a time of severe stress, I
decided to have an ultra fast EBT to rule out heart disease. I had a
zero calcium score (I was 58 yrs of age at the time).

I have a friend who is age 64, female. Her mother died of a stroke,
suddenly. I suggested that she have the EBT test performed since
she is concerned about heart disease. She told me today that she
decided against having it done because in her family, stroke was the
problem, not a heart attack. I told her that if your coronary arteries
are clear, that should indicate that your brain in NOT at risk for a
stroke.

Was I correct in what I told her? She told me that an aneurism and
stroke are one in the same and a stroke does not result from a
narrowed/occluded artery.

Thanks,

Mary

there are 2 types of strokes. Ischemic or hemorrhagic. Blocked or ruptured. An aneurysm is when a vessel is just ballooned. It can cause pain by pressing on nerves. If it ruptures then the problems are bad.

Mary,

It seems that your friend subscribes to the old adage: "ignorance is bliss". Except for that most rare of causes of stroke: aneurysm, ALL strokes are due to the same disease of the arteries that cause leg, heart and brain arterial obstruction or rupture: atherosclerosis. Since aneurysm is a congenital condition that no one, yet, has figured out a way to prevent, only an MRI with contrast has a chance of finding one and repairing it before rupture.

Clear coronary arteries is but one good indication that the brain arteries are also clear but no guarantee.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks, Walt.

I'm not sure I like the "no guarantee" part of your answer.

Mary
