For everyone's interest and what protection it might be:
----- Forwarded Message ----- The Experiment is Underway -- Did Anyone Ask You?
Did you know that your fruits, grains, and vegetables are being genetically engineered with radical conglomerations of genes from viruses, bacteria, insects and animals? * Many scientists warn that this experiment is dangerous and may result in foods with unintended toxins, allergens, or reduced nutritional content. One GE food product (L-tryptophan) killed at least 37 people. Attend our FREE Teach-in to learn more & help STOP this Experiment!
When: Saturday, October 6th, 2001; 1 to 4 p.m.
Where: Unitarian Universalist Church, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota Featured Speakers: Steven M. Druker: Attorney & founder of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity (ABI). ABI's lawsuit against the FDA over its failure to require mandatory safety testing & labeling of GE foods uncovered FDA's internal files on GE foods. These files reveal that FDA bureaucrats covered up extensive warnings of their own scientists about the unique hazards of these foods, & have systematically misrepresented the facts since 1992.
Dr. Neil Carman: Member of Sierra Club's Genetic Engineering Committee. Clean Air Program director for the Sierra Club's Lone Star (Texas) Chapter. Award-winning environmental advocate & former state regulator. Dr. Carman writes & speaks extensively about the biological hazards of GE.
Simon Harris: West Coast Field Organizer for the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) BioDemocracy Campaign. He has a master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of London in England. Harris has worked on organic farms in the US, Europe, and India. OCA promotes food safety, organic farming & sustainable agricultural practices in the U.S. and globally.

If you attend, will you ask Mr. Druker for the full case number?

GE foods concerns me a lot. One of the problems is the pollen drifts. It contaminates other varieties. There was a case in Canada a few months ago where a neighbor's field of GE corn contaminated the fields of a farmer. This farmer saves his own seed for his crops. It got contaminated with the GE corn, and a Canadian judge forced him to pay royalties to the maker of the GE corn! (The GE company should have been forced to pay him for contaminating his crops.)
Some countries won't accept shipments of GE foods, and the contamination by GE crops is hurting farmers who want to sell to those markets.
Since cross-breeding happens, one thing my husband and I want to do is to grow food for us that is not commonly found on dinner tables. The GE companies are monkeying around with the foods that get eaten the most because this is where they can make the biggest profits. They're not going to touch (at least for a while) foods that not too many people eat - like pawpaw, collard greens, etc. There's not enough profit. Provided a food doesn't cross-pollinate with some of the GE crops, it should be safe for consumption (at least for a while).
We haven't eaten corn for some time. The FDA is covering up adverse reactions in people who have consumed products with GE corn in them. The GE corn is not supposed to be in products consumed by humans, but it contaminated regular corn crops.

Hi, Judy.
If/when you and your husband are growing these "unusual" foods would you please let us know . . I'm sure I'm not the only person on this board you would like to buy some. (what is pawpaw?) All of the food allergy sufferers probably need some new foods to put into rotation.
Thanks for posting. JoanNAz

It's a tree native to the hardwood forests of the east and midwest. They ripen from August to October, so if you live in a big city like Phoenix or Tucson, you may be able to pick some up. They won't grow in the wild in Az because they don't like low humidity and dry winds. They also require 400 hours of winter chill. But they are sometimes grown as houseplants in deep containers. They're sometimes called "the poor man's banana."
Phoenix and Tucson have fairly high populations of people not native to the U.S., and local supermarkets frequently stock "exotic" produce for them. Also, there are foods Native Americans eat and gather.
Collard greens will grow in southern AZ during the fall, winter, and spring. If you're in Phoenix or Yuma, they'd probably only grow in the "winter" in those places. In Flag they're probably strictly summer.
I don't think anyone is fooling around with yams yet. From a western standpoint, they're adaptogen (increasing resistence to stress). From a TCM standpoint they tend to be Qi tonic. Sweet potatoes are not the same thing as yams. They belong to 2 different families.
Personally, I like pomegranates. I look forward to getting some each fall. They will grow in AZ - at least at the higher altitudes in southern AZ. I don't know about Phoenix, Tucson, or Yuma. But definitely in Bisbee, Sierra Vista, etc.
If you can get a copy of a Gurney's (I think I spelled the company correctly) catalogue of seeds and plants, the company sells some "exotic" vegetable seeds. I can remember when spaghetti squash was "exotic" and the seed had to be ordered from some place like Gurney's. I'm not sure, but I think squash may be one of the plants that the GE folks are messing up. I don't know if spaghetti squash, butternut squash, and yellow squash cross pollinate or what families they're in.
I guess you know about flaxseed and flaxseed oil for omega-3. If you eat meat, grass-fed beef is high in omega-3, but not grain-fed beef. There was an article on Dr. Mercola's site. The highest percentages of omega-3 tend to be found in plants and animals native to the more northern latitudes. I've heard it refered to as "nature's antifreeze".
There are various "weeds" such as lambs quarters that not only are medicinal but can be used as food.
Our ancestors just a few generations back had far more variety in their diets than we do today. Especially those who lived in rural settings.

Thanks for the great info, Judy!
Does a pawpaw taste like a banana?
As I live in an apt. and have no space to grow anything and a "black thumb"!:), I would need to purchase the fruits instead of seeds. We have Wild Oats here (Tucson), and while they have a fairly good selection of traditional organic produce many times the "weird" stuff just isn't there. Trader Joe's is also here but their produce selection isn't as good; they seem to focus more on other things. I wish we had Whole Foods here, but we don't (yet). I had not heard that spaghetti squash is being "monkeyed with." What a shame, I eat it periodically since I can't eat most pastas.
Am looking into mail-order sources for produce, like Diamond Organics (awaiting their catalog); perhaps they have pomegranates, etc.
Dr. Mercola is great, isn't he? Have joined subscriber list, and as soon as I can afford it will order some grass-fed beef. Currently I buy Coleman's at Wild Oats, which, while not grass-fed, is at least not pumped up full of hormones and antibiotics.
Well, it was nice "chatting" with you! :)
Take Care, JoanNAz

Hi, Lester.
Since the AMA revoked my license (see home page) I have no money to travel or attend conferences. I keep up by the monthly world literature search I have been mentioning (Functional Medicine Update--website healthcomm.com)
One of the AMA's strategies is to deprive the alternative practitioner of the $ wherewithall to keep up but the internet is finally defeating that strategy.
If YOU go let us know what you learn.

Thanks, Judy F.
You will be frightened (as I was) to hear that more than 80% of the foods we can get at the grocery store now contain GEFs and ALL without having to put it on the lable.
Enough lobby money can accomplish miracles.

Sarasota Alliance for Safe Foods presents…
Genetic Engineering, Food, & Our Environment:
A Day of Education & Action
Some of these foods wind up on your dinner plate, unlabeled and with very little safety testing.
* Ecologists have already documented many unexpected, negative effects on the environment from GE.
* Many people have religious or ethical objections to the genetic tampering of food & animals.
* Advocates for a secure food supply warn of unprecedented monopoly control of our food:
patented GE seeds are increasingly the only seeds available to farmers.
The event is free, but pre-registration is encouraged; call (941) 921-3330.
Jane Akre: Recipient of the 2001 $125,000 Goldman Environmental Prize. Former investigative reporter for FOX-TV in Tampa. Her report about GE Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) in the Florida milk supply was censored by FOX. In 2000, Akre won a historic $425,000 jury verdict against FOX.

In MY opinion, it is immoral and unethical what money is doing to the health of our country!

Am checking out another store ("New Life") later this week. I would KILL for a fresh pomegranate! I haven't lived here long so maybe the stores here carry them -- when are they in season, fall, right?
