Viruses

Posted by Terpning on April 23, 2002 at 13:29:21:

With a old theory now being seriously looked into that schizophrenia is/can be caused by a virus, my question is, what CAN'T be caused by a virus? Maybe even depression, anxiety, things that are thought to be genetically, nutritionally, or environmental as the cause could be caused by different viruses? There are lots of strange viruses out there that can cause a lot of different things but, if something is wrong with brain chemistry doctors tend to not to consider viral as the root cause. Any comments or thoughts?

Since microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc.) are ubiquitous, it is impractical to chase them if one's goal is to prevent and cure diseases. They may be (or just appear) helpful short term, but in the long run these are loosing approaches, IMO. Other approaches (nutritional, stress alleviating, etc.) that focus on making one stronger and correcting one's various imbalances have shown to be better than those that focus on chasing the microbes.

I agree prevention is the best but, socially the good ol USA is decades away from that type of thinking, so I think science should be doing more research on viruses. All of these people who have problems like EBV, HIV, schitzophrenia and countless other viruses could benefit.

Thanks, Terpning.

Since antiviral research is the most likely to produce a lucrative payoff, I think that we can expect that that is being done.

Viruses will eventually be used to carry gene splices into every cell in the body and correct genetic deficiencies. That means that wild viruses even now have the capability to insert inadvertant splices into our genes and reset our "health" settings for the rest of our lives.

Presently only "wellness" will help prevent such happenings or even reverse the effects of such inadvertant splicings. Eventually science will be able to do more but possibly not during the lifetimes of our present population.

Hope this helps.

Walt

All the diseases you mentioned can and have been helped and cured by the approached I described. And I see no problem if those who aren't ready to accept "that" type of thinking die off. IMO, even if science figures out what microbes play a role in certain diseases and manage to subdue them, these people will suffer other problems if they don't correct the root cause. Metaphorically speaking, if you don't fix the original problem, you will be running with a a box of bandaid trying to patch holes that appear when the real problem manifests in different forms.

By the way, there's no consclusive evidence that HIV is a problem. It hasn't even been isolated. AIDS is. See Work of Stefan Lanka for more on this.
