So very worried about my son

Posted by Mom [855.14] on June 19, 2004 at 12:09:28:

My 19 year old son went to the doctor yesterday with nausea and saying that his brain felt like mush. This has been going on off and on for the past few months, mostly in mornings, but yesterday it was the worst so he went to the doctor. They did extensive blood tests in which we have not yet gotten back the results. The thing is, while he was in the docs office, he broke out in a rash over his chest and stomach. They took blood, he passed out, then the rash was gone. Has anyone ever heard of a rash appearing and disappearing so fast or know what this could be indicative of? This morning, he is very very weak and pale. He is really thin and I'm so afraid something serious is wrong. I guess the blood tests will tell something but I am on pins and needles.

Hi Mom,

I hope thay have not forgotten to check for Lyme disease,
B12 defficiency and overactive thyroid as well as epilepsy.

Herpes, shingles, syphilis and Multiple Sclerosis etc can also affect neurological function.

I wish him luck..

Ron

Get his blood sugar checked right away, and his liver function too. The brain mush sounds like how I feel with my hypoglycemia, but the rash could be an overburdened liver, among other things.

After getting the blood work results back, listen to what the docs say, BUT, if it were me I'd take him to an acupuncturist too.

Hi Mom,
Is he thursty all the time by any chance? Being thin a lot of times is an indication of type 1 diabetes and lack of energy goes with it as well as "mushy" brain since there is no glucose delivered to it and brain and nervous system live on it. Did he have a glucose test done?

wondering if the rash could have been anxiety related? once after one of my children was born I went back for follow-up exam and my brother has been recently killed, after some discussion with the doctor about the death in my family because he was a personal and kind doctor, I had red blotchy places on my chest-I guess from discussing the emotional issue at the time. I pray the best for you son. Let us hear when you know more!

Hi, Mom.

Chronic hives will do that. The most likely diagnosis is severe chronic storage of stress-effect producing dysautonomia. See the glossary for that and the archives for that and chronic hives.

Is he into drugs?

Thanks for replying Dr. Stoll. No, no drugs. He "is" into a lot of junk food. Junk food junkie. I made him eat a cup of blueberries once in which he replied as I was handing him the cup, "These would be much better with muffin mix wrapped around them". ha

Thanks WOW. Yes, he was very thirsty the day he went to the doctor and has been since. They did a urine test and said there was no "sugar" in his urine. So I'm assuming that is a glucose test?

Hi Mom,
The sugar would show in his blood, not his urine. It might be a good idea to test his blood sugar and see if it is high. Thirst and being thin are 2 indications of diabetes and if he goes to to the bathroom a lot, that is another symptom of it. If you can get an inexpesive home tester, it would allow him to test the sugar daily and see if it is normal range.

a urine test is for both glucose and for ketones-if he wasn't spilling glucose into urine right at the time of the test due to not having eaten, his body would be burning fat and making ketones.
At any rate, anyone who wants to test blood or urine, in the USA, you can get what you need cheap and without a prescription. A store brand glucose meter is $15-20. A can of 50 strips, Keto-diastix, that tests both glucose and ketones in urine, is about $10. Having these on hand allow you to test at different times of day.

Thanks, Mom.

The most recent understanding of the nutritional understanding I have heard is that "food is information for your genes and determines how they function".

Junk food could be his "drug". See the brain chemistry and behavioral archives for long established research supporting that concept (Dr Alexander Schauss' research was the earliest I know of.) Of course, the list is very long but Dr Schauss' work will begin to give you the idea.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

The only thing the blood tests revealed was a slightly elevated blood protein. Don't know exactly what this means but what I've just learned be doing a search says that high c-reactive protein is an indication of heart disease, scary, OR simply a natural defense against infection.

Any thoughts?

while you're waiting for the medicos to come up with a helpful suggestion or course of treatment, you might work on your son's diet. Elimination diets (see archives) can help you figure out what foods might be bad for him. You can do this with blood allergy testing, too, but it can cost $250.
Also, thinness can be a result of parasites- you might try a 5-day cleanse-www.herbdoc.com or 1-800-herbdoc. You need intestinal formula #1 and #2 for the 5 day cleanse (it's all oral). This supplier has an informative free newsletter- you might want to get on the mailing list.
As for possible heart disease, if you've been following this site for a while, you know that low fat and low cholestrol is NOT the way to go. Make sure your son is getting enough protein- a junk food diet is usualy pretty deficient in protein-I realize he might not be totally co-operative, but there's probably some kind of nut or seed he likes, get him those to snack on.
