New to this board and a question

Posted by Raeanna on March 19, 2002 at 19:57:42:

I told a relative about my problem and she suggested this board. So here I am. I am also looking forwarding to ordering your book. I'll tell you briefly about myself.
I'm a 46 year old female in exzcellent health. I have yet to have to take prescription meds in my lifetime and rarely take an aspirin. I dont drink or smoke and am not overweight. I have a lifetime of anxiety (hereditary) which has gotten worse over the last 10+ years. I try and deal with it best I can. Constipated at times usually with semi-hard to hard stool. The real problem is sometimes I'll doze off after a meal for 20 minutes or so and awaken with a fast heart rate and very mild nauseau, boht which lasts less than 3 minutes. Once I am fully awake I'm just fine. BP is normally 130/80. I have also noticed at times just before a BM I occassionally get that mild nausea feeling again, lasting a few moments. What can be happening here? Nerves? I pretty much live in an anxious state.

Hi Raeanna - You need to get an heerbal colon cleanser and take it just on weekends - to keep your bowels moving a little better. You are having an allergic reaction to something that you are consuming is why your Heart rate goes up after eating. Start noticing what you ate that is causing these reactions and eliminate those things from your diet. Look for wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, corn and even caffnine drinks could be sending your Heart into orbit. You also need to start practicing some form of stress reduction - it sounds like your getting close to haveing a health problem if you don't change the above things that I have mentioned!

Hi, Roeanna.

Welcome to the 'site.

First of all, your "hereditary anxiety" may have been called that 30 years ago but it is NOW known that such cases are only 20% genetic and the other 80% is alterable by changing lifestyle and environmental influences.

Next, if those environmental influences are NOT recognized and dealt with, other organ systems will start to show cracks as the individual grows older---EXACTLY what is happening to you!

Your "real problem" is called food hypersensitivities, 95% of which are caused by LGS.

Your LGS is caused by exactly the environmental effects that have aggravated your anxiety all these years.

Use the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then go to the homepage articles and the archives till you begin to understand what is going on and what things you need to do to reverse them.

Let us know what you learn and how you do. Do not hesitate to bring your new questions, as you become knowledgable, to the BB. Others with similar problems can learn right along with you and that saves me typing.

There are at least thousands of people like you out there and only one of me.

Walt

Hi and welcome Raeanne. I can relate to everything you
are saying, even that weird but fleeting nausea before a
BM. The heart pounding after meals etc is also familiar.
I don't live in a constant anxious state myself , however,
it was not hard to put me there.

I was in bad shape about a year ago and have followed
pretty darn religiously the advice of this board and I
assure you it will at least eliminate a huge portion of
your suffering. Your bowels will improve and your
anxiety will improve with SR and the LGS diet plan.
Constant low level anxiety is really taxing on your
system. If you have not already, read the book Mind As
Healer Mind As Slayer and you will understand more
about what your body is doing when you are stressed.

My feeling is that you can pretty much make it through
your 20s and some of your 30s if you are basically
healthy as you say you are (no meds, healthy lifestyle
etc.), but the closer a woman gets to menopause the
more her mind/body will say "enough is enough, you
need to be kinder to me and deal with these issues or I
will make you constantly aware of how out of balance I
really am."

Just curious, what exactly is it that you are anxious
about? Past issues, phobias, death? Also, how long
have you been having thes symptoms? Is this new or
ongoing?

You have come to the right place if you are truly ready to
heal.

Thanks, Elisa and congratulations!

It was a lot of work, wasn't it? However, now that you are this far, I would bet that you would say, without hesitation: IT WAS WORTH IT!

I sprained my ankle last night and read your answer early this morning. Ive spent the entire day reading the archives on LGS and many other things. No where did I find a definition on exactly what it was, what causes it and what can be done about it. Am I missing something?

Thank you for answering. I suffer with a few phobias since I was a kid. They have gotten worse. They are agoraphobia, autophobia, panic and anxiety, also emetophobia (fear of vomiting) this is THE worst. This fear has always been there since childhood, but over the past 5 yrs it has gotten worse. (I havent vomited in 38 yrs, many people with this are the same, they go many many years without 'doing it'), but unfortunately I find nothing on the board to help me, no explanation of LGS or SR, how to get help, what to do, where to find info etc.. I find tidbits about these things but nothing substantial that I can learn from.

Click on "Symptoms and Diseases Quick Reference Guide" at the top of this screen. Then click on LGS or SR or whatever else you're interested in. This will take you to the glossary where you can look up any unfamiliar terms. WHen inside the glossary, click on the various links which will take you to Walt's articles, and archives etc.

To Raeanna re: where to start

Raeanne, sorry it has taken me a few days to see your
questions, I was out of town. But here are the answers
to your questions.

The reason I asked about what your fears were was
because I suspected you had the exact fear that grips
you the most (emetophobia). Based on your symptoms
I suspected that you have been trying to control your
body's functions for MANY years. Now it is finally so out
of tune from your efforts that it is making you feel ill,
even nauseous (ironically the very thing you fear). You
need to relearn how to allow your body to function the
way it should.

The best place to start is to get a copy of Pelltier's book
Mind As Healer Mind As Slayer. You can find it on
Amazon. This book explains what is happening with
your body when it is under stress. Essentially because
of your phobia (s) you have a distrust of your body's own
autonomic functions (the things that happen
unconciously like breathing , digestion, heartrate etc).
Since you fear vomiting, I suspect you are
subconciously trying to control your body from within all
the time in an effort prevent this event. That coupled
with the constant stress on your adrenal glands has
thrown your body out of balance. And with age it gets
worse, and I suspect your diminishing hormones
exacerbate the problem. Many women develop new or
suffer increased phobias when their estrogen starts
dropping. Panic attacks etc are not uncommon for
premenopausal women. If you are already phobic it
must be worse.

Now the good part. If you can achieve the relaxation
response, you can start to allow your body to rebalance
itself. In fact another book you should read is The
Relaxation Response. You need to learn how to allow
your body to function without your subconcious controls
and this will help you tremendously. That's what they
mean by SR here. It may take some time to learn for
you, but it is not impossible. You have to trust that your
body knows what's best and stop trying to resist it.

As far as diet is concerned, the whole foods plan in
Beth's book is also a perfect place to start. (girl, you are
going to be doing a lot of reading!LOL). This will help
balance any dietary problems that are part of the mix. I
think the SR is the thing that will do it for you though
based on the information you gave.

You say you do not take meds of any sort which is good
of course. HOWEVER, if I were you I would try to get a
prescription for a couple of xanax or lorazepam (just
one or two pills). Taking one of these will allow you to
feel what it is like when you are not bracing your body or
living in fear. It will be a little promise of what is to come
when you achieve effective SR. That is what you will feel
like without meds when you are in balance again. It can
be done.

I know what you are going through. I used to be phobic
about vomiting too. I know how frightening the thought
of it can be when you have an irrational fear. Just know
that the pain you live in because of your fear is FAR
WORSE than getting sick itself. You must be aware of
that every moment. NOTHING is worse than living is
fear. Nothing.

Hope this is helpful to you. Take care.
