Use of glucosamine by hemophiliacs.

Posted by Robert on January 15, 1999 at 21:04:05:

Dear Walt,

Do you know of any research on the above subject and the results thereof? As you know hemophiliacs suffer from extreme osteoarthritis and wornout cartilage in their major joints (ankles, knee, hips, wrists, elbows and shoulders(sic)due to repeated hemorrhages into these joint spaces. The normal mode of treatment is Motrin in order to ease the pain and stiffness.
However I have be hearing stories about glucosamine help to rebuild the cartilage tissue to the point of pain and stiffness free for some individuals. Therefore my quest for information on this subject. No I am not a doctor but a patient.

Thank you for any response.

Dear Robert,

Certainly can't hurt to try it. The one thing that IS known is that NSAIDS cause the damage to progress faster while they give temporary relief of pain. At least the glucosamine doesn't cause more damage.

Look at my responses about hemophilia this week. The hemophilia foundation has known how to teach hemophiliacs how to stop their own bleeding episodes (the only thing that will REALLY prevent this damage) for more than 20 years. Why have they stopped teaching it????

Walt

Dr. Stroll,

Thanks for the quickness in your response I will give it a try. I'll try to find you postings in hemophilia but other than the date search engine I am not sure how to.

Robert
