Glucosame/Condroitin

Posted by Lynn on February 23, 1999 at 02:59:20:

I have heard alot of hype lately about arthritis pain and the glucosame/condriotin (spelling?) combination..in fact there seems to be dozens of products available now with these ingredients which they say help rebuild cartlidge..i see them all over, hear about them on the radio, read about them, etc...

On one hand, i read studies that confirm that these ingredients DO make a difference.
On the other hand, i have also heard that the glucomasme/condroitin molecules are too large to be digested, thus pass out of the body unused.

Whats the truth here? These are polar opposite claims..someone's not being honest.

Thanks!

lynn

It is the chondroitin that cannot be absorbed because of the size of the molecules. Glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride both seem to help. However, as Walt pointed out the other day, glucosamine may relieve the symptoms for a time, but if nothing is done about the cause, the problem will come back.

Dear Lynn,

You have yet to see me recommend chondroitin. The day may come when it is proven to be effective but I have not seen any evidence that convinces me yet.

However, there is ample proof of glucosamine sulphate's effectiveness & safety. There are those who say that glucosamine HCL is as effective but I am not yet convinced of that. I keep an open mind and await new data. Talk to your veterinarian. This has been used very successfully in animals for many years.

There is a significant testimonial about this very thing within the past 48 hours (right on this BB). You should take a look at it.

Walt

The glucosamine combination that my cat is taking for arthritis conatins Glucosamine HCl. So the veterinary guys seem to think that it's a good as sulfate.
