chondroitin

Posted by Martha on August 25, 1998 at 20:39:44:

Dr. Stoll: I have been unable to decide whether or not
chondroitin is advisable with glucosamine. Today my D.C.
said that if you take glucosamine, your body makes
chondroitin. Do you know anything to support that?
Thanks, Martha

Dear Martha,

I have yet to see research indicating that chondroitin (orally) has any benefit. I would be interested in any research about your question.

Walt,

In light of your answer to Martha, have you seen research showing glucosamine has any value? I have been taking both for about a year, as a result of reading "The Arthritis Cure".

Also, do you have any opinions about possible side effects? During a colonoscopy, my doc found one small white ulcer near the top end of colon. Biopsy proved nothing and he seemed quite surprised and confused by it. Suggested it might be caused by the glucosamine/chondroitin. Any comments?

Thanks,
Gerry

Walt,

Dr. Jason Theodokolis has recently released a follow-up to his best-selling THE ARTHRITIS CURE. I think it's called THE NEW ARTHRITIS CURE.

The book expands many of the things that you and I already knew that were excluded in the first book -- i.e. -- pancreatic enyzmes and certain herbs also reduce inflammation.

There is an entire section of the book that is devoted to the clinical trials that have been done on glucosamine, glucosamine and chondroitin combined and chondroitin all by itself. All three are efficous.

I didn't buy the book so I don't have the references at my finger tips (and I, like you, will not labor to PROVE anything to anybody) BUT if I were a Naturopath and putting my reputation on the line I would check the studies that Theodokolis has in his book. It might change my opinion of the use of chondroitin.

Bob

Dear Gerry,

Yes I have. However, my policy has been to discard articles about stuff once I know for sure that something is so. I made this decision about glucosamine more than a year ago. Ask your veterinarian for recent research. You can also ask him/her about side effects.

I have found that the brand makes a lot of difference. Several people have investigated this and reported it on this BB. However, for legal reasons we cannot list brand names on this bb. If you started a string titled something like "Best Brands of Glucosamine?", I would be surprised if someone would not offer to email you that information.

So far as it causing intestinal ulcers is concerned; beware of the "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc." mental trap many conventional physicians fall into. This basically means: "after this, therefore because of this".

Everyone with arthritis has leaky gut syndrome as a major contributing factor for their inflammation. If one looks long enough, one will find ulcers in everyone with LGS. Who takes glucosamine?

One of the shames of the simplistic allopathic paradigm has been the universal recommendation of NSAIDS for the symptoms of arthritis when we have known for more than 20 years that NSAIDS all aggravate LGS. SO, the treatment was making the causes worse.

I have never heard of good glucsamine damaging the gut wall.

Walt

Thanks, Bob.

I needed that (grin).

I will take a look.

I am enjoying all of your posts. If I was still in practice in the multidisciplinary centre I had in Lexington, I would be offering you a job!

Namaste' Walt
