Dear Don,

If glucosamine DID cause your MD, you are probably the first in the world & someone should write a paper about you.

Macular degeneration is caused by the same mechanisms that cause atherosclerosis of the larger vessels and is controlled by the same approaches.

In MY professional experience, Chelation therapy always does wonders for MD. Any competent practitioner of Chelation Therapy would also recommend a 10% fat diet, essential oils, high doses of the antioxidents that focus in the eye (vitamin E & C) along with coenzyme Q10. Call (800) 532-3688 for the closest Chelating practitioner to you.

Call (800) 692-9400 for more information about the world literature on side effects of glucosamine.

Dear rita,

Although you can get significant results from glucosamine, they will NOT be permanent. Even the most enthusiastic proponents of the benefits of glucosamine would not consider that joint symptoms were a glucosamine deficiency. Without learning something about WHY this happened to you, your symptoms will be back even if you keep up the glucosamine forever.

You need to become a student of what you have to finally resolve it.

Dear Dale,

For chronic conditions like RA, the solution will never be something you TAKE but something you DO.

Taking the glucosamine MIGHT help but the results would be temporary. Why not give it a try while you are learning how to get well?

Bob McFerran suffered from a far advanced, & rapidly progressing, case of RA. He is now well by getting started in the right direction from the information I have been providing on this BB for years. He did what is needed in all cases: He became a student of his condition. He is now writing a book about his exp-eriences & resesarch in this area. He is putting it on the BB for people like you so that others might be spared the agony he went through before learning that his conventional physicians were not offering him all of his options.

You could get a big head start by using the search feature provided with this BB & read everything you can find about RA, ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis, fibromyositis, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, bursitis, Bob McFerran , etc. They are all caused by the same mechanisms. Each diagnosis is based upon that person's genetic propensities & NOT on the causes.

My book (link below) would be a big help to you once you decide to get over this. There are several chapters (and many resoources in the back) that would begin to give you the understanding you need to progress.

As you get well, I would appreciate your sharing your esperiences with the BB participants. You could help others prevent a lifetime of crippling agony.

All you need is some more tools to illuminate the path you are already on. Get yourself a copy of my book (link below) and start there. While you are waiting for it to come, use the search feature of this BB to find everything still on the BB about arthritis, fibromyositis and the like.

Then, if you have more questions, write again. In the meantime, trying the glucosamine sulfate is worthwhile since it cannot hurt you and might help for a while.

Dear Jessie,

As I have said many times, here on this BB: "I have had no professional or personal experience with this substance."
However, I have studied its anecdotal effectiveness in humans & have discussed its effectiveness in animals with Veterinarians.

I HAVE had many years of experience with discovering, & dealing with, the causes behind WHY an individual has arthritis. I used to have arthritis but when I learned how to deal with my own causes, it disappeared. I have not had it for more than 20 years. I do have joint pain from a sky diving accident--there is no accounting for stupidity. (sigh)

I KNOW that, if I had arthritis, I would be giving glucosamine sulfate a try. Your body is still the best laboratory for whether it will help YOU or not. It works differently for each person. Since there are no known serious side effects, what would you have to lose by finding out if it would work for you?

FINALLY, as I have also said many times right here on this BB: "The solution to a chronic c ondition like arthritis will never be something you TAKE but something you DO." Even if the glucosamine DOES help, the results will be temporary (could even be a year or so). However, unless you are planning to die in the next several years, you will eventually have to understand what I have said above.

When you get ready to become a student of arthritis (or whoever is is that has it for which you are gathering information)--the only thing I have yet seen that actually will solve the problem--you would be interested in reading a copy of my book (link below). THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

I am 66 years old. A year ago, I had difficulty walking down stairs due to pain in my right knee which was diagnosed as artritis. If I planyed a round of golf, it would take me two to four days before the pain would leave. Ibiprofen or Aleve would help a little. Last February, after reading the book, "The Arthrits Cure" I began taking 1500 mg of glucosamine and about 400 mg of chondritin daily.

I experienced some improvement after the first week, and the improvement in my knee continued as each month passed. By July, I was nearly free of pain in my knee and had improved mobility and a greater range of motion. I decided to discontinue both chemicals to see what would happen. The improvement continiued and my knee is back to where it was two years ago.

I realize each condition is unique to the individual, but I thought I should share my experience with others.

Dear Jerry,

It is MY understanding that your situation is EXACTLY the one in which the glucosamine is the most likely to help.

HOWEVER, having said that, I would suggest you read everything that has been placed on the BB about this condition as well as the articles about glucosamine. Use the search feature. There are many things you need to learn that will give you more permanent benefits than using the glucosamine alone.

Since I am sure that Doc Dave will do a better job telling you about the structural things you can do, I will not go into them here.

I would suggest, as this is healing, that you do no more weight bearing exercises than are necessary for you to get around for daily activities: take the elevator rather than use the stairs, do only underwater exercises for fitness, save your steps till this is much better for at least 6 months.

Let us know how you do. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to share them with us here on the BB.

Dear Ed,

I rerally appreciate your sharing your experiences with the BB participants. Glucosamine is the first thing I have seen that can actually improve symptoms by improving the self healing properties of joints.

However as you will see, if you take the time to use the search feature of this BB to read all of the articles about this condition & glucosamine, using these substances alone will eventually result in the condition coming back in spite of continuing to take them.

NOW is the time for you to dedicate your time to becoming an expert in the other factors contributing to your condition, & doing something about them, to keep this from coming back.

The unfortunate thing about being human is that, once symptoms are gone, people tend to not take the time to learn more.

Dear Gary,

Thanks for your thoughts. They are "right on".

I would, however, plead with you to consider that what is practiced in this country is NOT "traditional medicine". It is "conventional medicine". Traditional medicine has been prsacticed for at least 5000 years (possibly 25,000 years).

Conventional medicine is a 100 year old FAD that is now failing as it has reached the ultimate absurdity of its trying to force the health care camel through the eye of the allopathic needle. It can't be done.

When we call our present conventional medical monopoly "Traditional" we are unnecessarily (and inaccurately) covering it with undeseved glory.

Breaking habits are hard. The conventional medical monopoly is doing its best to keep us calling it "traditional". When we do so, we are falling right into their trap.

There is presently a disagreement about the different forms of glucosamine, right here on this BB, between Bob MeFerran and myself. Either one of us might be right--I don't think that has been determined yet. However, it does point up the fact that there is much to be learned yet about the answers to your questions.

Certainly, no problem with taking it with Synthroid, so far as I know. HOWEVER, it IS interesting that both thyroid problems AND arthritis are caused by overwhelming stress-effect storage in the hypothalamus.

Perhaps, what you need to focus on more is what is behind everything you are experiencing.

I am currently taking Glucosamine Chondroitin manufactured by Sundown Vitamins for arthritis. I have recently been informed about a product called Cosamine-DS and I am curious to know the ingredients in this new product. Please tell me where I can find any information or research on this new product and how it compares to Glucosamine Chondroitin in treatment of arthritis.

Dear Nick,

I think it is a long shot, too.

However, if you will use the search feature for this bulletin board, & read everything you can find on this subject, I think you will learn what you need to know.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt

Dear Pam,

I have not heard of Cosamine DS. However, it sounds like glucosamine with some of the cofactors known to work with it. Your healthfood store could find you that information or at least point you in the right direction.

Let us know what you learn.

I have arthritis in my knees and read about glocsamine sulfate as well as chondroitin sulfate as being two nutitional supplements that stimulate new cartilage growth. Are there any side effects from using these supplements?

Dear Dr. Stoll,

My 70 y.o mother wants to begin taking GS, she has chronic back and knee pain (osteoporosis/osteoarthritis).
She has been taking Fosamax approximately 1 year, are their any interactions or suggestions you can offer?
thanx!, Bill
