Both my mother and I began to have diarrhea and stomach cramps almost immediately after starting to take glucosamine sulfate. I purchased mine at a GNC store, which I believe is a perfectly reputable supplier, so I'm not interested in ordering alternative brands. My mother had identical symptoms after buying a different brand. So I believe that the product does have these side effects. I predict that when I stop taking GS, the symptoms will subside. I continue to take GS because it is effective. Read on.

All the same, the diarrhea and cramps are mild, and I have experienced a dramatic improvement in my back pain and sciatica over the past month since starting to take glucosamine sulphate. I have had these symptoms for three years, so I doubt that the improvement was spontaneous.

Refer to my posting to the original query. I began to have side-effects of diarrhea and stomach cramps immediately after starting to take glucosamine sulfate, and so did my mother. I think this happens to people with particularly sensitive digestive tracts, as both of us have histories of irritable bowels. On the other hand, the benefits of back pain and sciatica relief seem to outweigh the side effects, which are fairly mild. I'll continue with the glucosamine sulfate for another month or so, then stop. I'll tell you whether the supposed side effects cease.

Dear Kenneth,

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. I think anyone can react to anything. I would be very interested if you can correlate your stopping it to cessation of your symptoms. If you can, I would guess that a lot of others will be reporting it. As you well know most people with arthritic problems also have intestinal problems.

Now that we know that it is the leakage of poorly digested macromolucules, through the leaky gut wall, that is one of the major precipitating factors in all arthritis, it only emphasizes what I have been saying that the solution to a chronic condition like arthritis will NEVER be something you take but something you do. It was to emphasize this wider way of looking at this problem that I wrote my book.

In order to see whether there was a dose-response effect of glucosamine sulfate on my gastrointestinal symptoms, I reduced my intake from 2,000 mg (two 1000 mg tablets, one with breakfast and one with dinner) to 1,000 mg (a half tablet with breakfast and another half tablet with dinner). I have experienced an immediate reduction of symptoms and firming of stools. There is still a slight amount of bloating and acceleration of bowel movements.

Would it interefere with the saw palmetto, and would it do his any good. He has pain and stiffness, limps, and has particular trouble going downhill. Where can I get your book? Thanks!

Dear Joyce,

You were right in thinking that he would profit from reading a copy of my book (see link above & at the bottom of this page).

From what you are describing, if I were in his shoes, I would take a combination of glucosamine (1500 milligrams) & chondroitin (1200 milligrams) daily for a month to see if it helps. If it does, he should consider taking it for years.

The other things he should do are covered in depth in my book. One thing I can suggest right away is to avoid weight-bearing exercises & do under water exercises at least 3 times a week. Most communities now have excellent programs for this year round.

Once you-all have the book under your belts, please ask any questions you might have rigtht here on the BB so others with similar problems can learn too.

What a drastic improvement in my overall health and reduction of pain - i can pick up my children for the first time in five years and not have pain from it. This combination has helped me with my arthritis pain and with many little aches that i did not know were related.

Dear Elizabeth,

I hate to rain on your parade & I do not intend to do so destructively.

I appreciate your testimonial about the effectiveness of these simple remedies. However nobody thinks that your condition is due to a deficiency of glucosamine, chondroitin & manganese.

Unless you take this opportunity to learn more about WHY you got into this fix, eventually the problem will come back even though you keep taking the remedy.

My book is still the simplest opening of that door that I know of. See link on this page.

I bought Glucosamine Sulfate, 500mg. today in hoping that this may help, Could you please tell me what healing capabilities this has as an alternative to Relafen or Oxaprozin.(Daypro, which I was also on), and how long will it take to take affect? I had an MRI done already and have been to a Neurologist to see if there was any nerve damage, but appararently there was none, Thank goodness.Any help in this situation would be helpful. Thankyou.

Dear GW,

Her dose would be 1500 milligrams a day which would be 3 times a day of the product you mentioned.

There is no harm in giving it a try. If there are no results in a few weeks it is not likely to help. If there are SOME benefits that quickly, keeping it up would result in the maximun benefits FOR HER in a few months.

No one yet knows how to predict which person will get benefits. This is NOT a pain pill. Actual improvements in the tissue is the cause of the symptomatic relief. Her body is the best laboratory we yet have to see if it is worth while trying.

Let us know what happens. She has nothing to lose but her discomfort.

Dear Dr. Stoll,

At age 43, I am an active martial artist and have had problems in the past two years with severe swelling and pain in my left knee. This is the same knee which had cartilage removed as a result of a college football injury. It got to be so bad, I was contemplating further knee surgery and even joint replacement.

At the urging of a friendly health food store-owner, I have been taking 1500 MG of glucosamine per day for the past three months. During this period, I have experienced a gradual reduction in joint swelling and pain. My MA training has continued throughout this period. I had tried aspirin and ibuprophen but couldn't "stomach" them for long. There have been no harmful side-effects from the glucosamine... only results.

End of testimonial...

Just over a year ago, when I was contemplating surgery, I had the knee X-rayed. If I had the knee X-rayed again now, could there be any signs of cartilage repair/regeneration? Is it worth doing as "proof" of the effects of glucosamine?

Wha t do you think? Thanks for "listening."

It is my understanding that Mad Cow Disease is thought to be contracted by ingesting some 'brain-related' part of a cow; i.e. when a cow is processed, occasionaly part of the spinal cord or other matter invariably gets into the meat. Therefore, it would seem difficult to contract this disease by taking something made from the trachea - - unless part of the spinal cord or some other matter contaminates it.

I learned of GS and began taking it in August 1996. I take 750mg twice a day, and for me the results are astounding. My hands have gotten progressively better, and are now better than they have been in at least 25 years. I have suffered no side effects. I would be glad to discuss this in detail with anyone interested. I have passed the information to several doctors, but have no feedback from them.
