Dear Jack,

Thanks for the testimonial. It is typical for those with your same condition. You know that glucosamine and chondroitin are NOT pain pills. The only way they CAN help is to actually help with actual repair. In my experience, it takes about 2 years to show improvement on a MRI or Xray. Symptomatic relief occurs MUCH sooner if it is going to help.

Of course, there are a lot more things you should know about to magnify the benefits of the glucosamine. If you have a copy of my book, there are several chapters contained therein to help you understand what other approaches would be worth your while.

Dear k,

I would be greatly reassured by looking at the resources you used to come up with your conclusion that it had to be CNS material to spread this disease.

My resources say that ANY part of the infected animal transmitts the disease. The problem started because cows are vegetarians & normally do not eat other cows. It is only by adding meat byproducts into cows' feed (inexpensively from other cows)that this became a problem.

The tape I had on GS said there were no kind of interaction with other drugs. Do you know anything about MSM? Can that be taken with GS? Over Email someone said GS and taking antinflamitories can constrict blood vessels. I have DDD. Degenerative Disc Disease in all 5 of my lower vertibra. I have been taking 2000mg of GS for 2 wks. I think I have been feeling better. Then I felt funny yesterday and had my pressure taken and it was really high. Can that be because of the GS. Or should I look some were else? Louise

I have been running for 17 years and have had a degenerative condition in my spine (neck and lower back). I generally run 5 to 6 miles per day, 6 days a week. The last two years, I have seen a general deterioration of my spine. In the neck and lower back, I've had pinched nerves and frequent searing pain. My chiropractor has helped. I've seen him 2 to 3 times a week, off and on, for about a year. He told me to STOP RUNNING. After about 1 and 1/2 months of 1000 mg. per day, I am pretty much pain free. Go figure.

I can give you the horse's mouth on this one but since I am away on a 3 week speaking tour, I do not have it at hand. Please resubmit your note when I get back (see above).

In the meantime, nearly ALL cardiac dysrrhythmias are caused by a deficiency in intracellular magnesium. It is interesting that nearly every case of arthritis, bursitis & tendonitis also has a low intracellular magnesium.

I have several chapters discussing this in my book (see link below). That would give you a good headstart as to how to GET an intracellular magnesium. A regular serum magnesium (what is available in local labs) is worse than worthless. Look at the note I have about arthritis & about fibromyositis on my home page (see link below).

Dear Ric,

If you were already scheduled for the THR, the glucosamine will likely only delay the surgery a few years. Perhaps by then, we will have even better alternatives. SO, I would not hesitate to give it a try. You can always reschedual the surgery.

TAKING something will NEVER solve this problem. Chronic problems like this are only resolved by something you DO.

You would be greatly benefitted by reading a copy of my book (to begin understanding what your other options would be for actually doing something permanent about this problem)while you are watching to see how much the glucosamine helps. Do not use the Glucosamine Hydrochloride. The chondroitin is not well absorbed orally & is very dangerous given by injection.

The dosage of glucosamine sulphate is standard and is on every bottle (1500 milligrams a day in 3 divided doses).

My wife and I have been taking Glucosamine and Condroitin since July. My wife has experienced no side effects with 1500mg glucosamine and 1200mg condroitin daily and neither have I on the same dosage.
I suffered a knee injury this past June and started taking the supplements July 1st. By the end of the 3rd. week I started to feel better but I still had bad days. As it turned out I had suffered from torn meniscus cartilage both medial and lateral. Surgery was required and I still continued to take both supplements with the surgens knowledge. About 3 weeks ago I ran out of condroitin while on an extended trip and was running short of the glucosamine so i reduced the dosage to 1000mg daily. the result showed up rather quickly. within 2 weeks pain started to reoccur in the area of the surgery. I increased the glucosamine back to 1500mg daily and the pain has once again subsided.

It probably would. However, if it were me, I would also be taking about 6 grams of esterified vitamin C, 100 milligrams of zinc and 100 balanced B complex a day at the same time. All of these promote healing of such an injury & cannot harm you in any way.

Be sure to do your recommended physical therapy & rehabilitation since that is an integral part of your healing.

The pain disappeared, I regained full mobility of my knee and the bone spar disappeared. I still use both products and had keep the weight off for two years.

Dear Maria,

No one really knows, yet, why glucosamine does what it does. However, what IS known is that there are many other factors, that impinge upon disc disease, that one can do to resolve it.

I, myself, eliminated 5 bulging discs simply by learning to practice skilled relaxation techniques twice a day. You probably could too.

The glucosamine might help this process but, in the end, it will never be enough to resolve it. Why not give it a try?

When you are ready to learn about your other options, get a copy of my book (link below). THEN, when you are well, share your experiences with the BB participants. Others deserve to know that they are not being offered all of their options by the conventional medical monopoly.

The world literature says that the glucosamine sulfate is the only effective form. The only reason that glucosamine HCL is being promoted is that it is cheaper to produce (A terrible reason, in MY opinion.).

I wouldn't worry about this coming from cows. The worry I have heard is about "mad cow disease" & one cannot get it this way. If you have other concerns, write again.

That does not mean to say that we should not take things like glucosamine that only helps pain by actually repairing tissue. Dewar Norm,

You need to have a heart to heart talk with your local veterinarian! They have used this stuff for many years & know the most about it.

First of all I am sure you mean the cartilege of the bone surface & not the synovium.

Glucosamine has been shown to do something to regenerate surfaces like this. The chondroitin has not.

With this kind of damage, you should not be doing ANY weight bearing exercise. All communities now offer a regular (3 times a week) water exercise program. You need to avail yourself of that year round.

You would be wise to avoid weight bearing exercise of all types for about a year 'till this heals. Then, gradually getting back in to your favorite sport is worth trying.

In the meantime, you should consider a gentle, daily flexibility exercise (referenced in my book)--see link below.

Let us know how you do.
