It sounds like you need to read a copy of my book (link below). THEN, when you have the basics under your hat, write again with any questions you might have.

Dear Dave,
I had not heard anything like that. If you come up with any literature about it, I would be very interested in hearing it. From what I know about the action of this substance, and the causes of MD, I would be very surprised if there were a connection.
HOWEVER, having said that, the solution to macular degeneration is chelation therapy and following the directions of the chelating physician to prevent recurrence. Read "Bypassing Bypass" by Elmer Cranton, MD.

Dear Barry,
Please see the note I responded to today about this. If you do not have significant results within a month or so, it probably isn't going to help. Be sure you are taking the glucosamine sulfate form. If you DO have benefits in a month, you should get more benefits in 3 months.

Deaer Ellie,
Since good companies are interested in repeat business, they would be sure to process the glucosamine sulfate in a way as to get the best results. I would suggest you give up on the chondroitin since the world literature does not support its effectiveness taken orally.
My opinion.

To the best of my knowlege there is no evidence whatsoever that Chondroitin Sulfate and/or Glucosamine taken orally has any benefit in the treatment of Arthritis.
This is the result of extensive studies in Equine Degenerative Joint Disease(D.J.D.)
I believe that thousands of patients are being led up the garden path and given false hope for the financial gain of the companies producing the products.
Ever heard of the Trade Description act/or the misrepresentation of goods????
I look forward to any comments.

I started taking Glucosamine Sulfate at the end of July. I was able to stop using my knee brace about a month later, and used my cane much less often. At the end of September, I noticed pain in the area of my kidneys when turning over in bed or trying to sit up. I stopped using the Glucosamine, and the back pain went away. A few weeks later my knee had deteriorated, and I needed the knee brace and cane again! I started taking the Glucosamine again, and the pain in my knee is subsiding nicely, but the back pain is returning.Any suggestions?

I recently read (in "Michael Plumb's Horse Journal")that a 1000 lb horse needs 9000 mg of glucosamine and 7500mg of chondroiton to really be effective. This makes the daily cost somewhat expensive. Does anyone know where to perhaps purchase these products in bulk for a lower price?

Hello,
How is the daily recomended dosage of 1500 Milligrams of the glucosamine & about 1200 Milligrams of the chondroitin
determined? Are the two commpounds absorbed into the human system the same if they are in liquid or tablet form? How do they affect the body in order to reduce joint pain? And finally, do they actually help heal cartilage damaged areas? I know that these are a lot of questions and I would really apreciate a response. What is the name of the book? How would I get a copy?

Dear Lynn,
Although glucosamine might give you some temporary relief, It is much more likely that things like skilled relaxation, reflexology, acupuncture and balancing your trace minerals would do you a lot more good over the long haul.
Also, whoever is treating you for these related conditions should at least have told you how to stop the spur from growing by using double corn pads over the point of the spur.

As for the relaxation, I have a little blue battery powered device I bought at Radio Shack 10 years ago that makes a high pitched noise that steadily decreases as you relax. It attaches to my finger and I used to be able to relax enough to totally silence it, whereupon on a few occasions I felt as if I was floating above my body. I realize that was simply intense relaxation and not the "mystical stuff" some people believe in, but it was pretty neat. I wanted to know if this would produce the type of brain waves Dr. Stoll mentioned in one of the other letters. I have severe Graves Disease, (60 mg Propanalol a day and 3-50mg tablets propylthiouracil every 8 hrs). Shortly after something terribly stressful happened a year ago last February I started getting so tired I couldn't do my computer work for 10 minutes without having to lie down. My head shook like some sort of palsy was attacking my neck muscles and my heart beat lying down was 182 beats a minute. Friends with the disease told me it sounded lik
e thyroid problems, went to my doctor told her what they said, she tested and got hyper about the results and sent me to the specialist. He ran tests, got hyper and set me up for radioactive iodine. I didn't show up. Radioative anything freaks me out. Much cancer in my family. I know he didn't like it but after finally finding your site (I was searching info on glucosamine chondroitin for my arthritis)(I have to avoid nightshades and citrus) and seeing Graves disease discussed.....well Hallelujah! I've been searching ever since I got sick. There is nothing ANYWHERE else that I could find where anyone offers ANY kind of hope of anything other than lifelong meds and YIKES! Radiation Destruction of my thyroid. My son's previous girlfriend's mother and sister are HUGE from weight gain caused by their thyroid treatments. Another terrifying facet of typical treatment. I don't know exactly when my distrust of the medical establishment started, perhaps when I became pregnant with our first child and realiz
ing I was totally ignorant as to the whole situation started reading Adell Davis's books or perhaps earlier as a child now I think of it when my Uncle was in killing pain with his neck whom Doctors wouldn't touch and my mother cured over a few months time with reflexology. I do feel doctors have their uses when we are very well educated about whatever is wrong with us and all our options, but only if we realize that "they" are not likely to begin to know all the options. Thank goodness for the ones you are offering. I am ordering your book. Please let me know about the little machine I have. Our family has joined a fitness center since my husband has been reading a book on how to cure his diabetes with diet and exercise. He has gone from 377 to a regular reading of around 80 to 120. Also I am passing along your site to my sister-in-law with multiple problems including severe fibromyalgia and severe depression.
I also have hypoglycemia ,depression and multiple allergies. I used to be so healthy.
Maybe with your help, Dr. Stoll I'll get there again.
Thanks ever so much!

Dear Dr. Stoll --
I found your information on the use of ginger juice on your website and requested a copy of your book.
Having had GERD-type symptoms for at least 2.5 years and a recent upper GI that confirmed reflux, I thought I'd try the ginger juice before I started any pharmaceuticals.
Tried it for 3 weeks, some improvement, but not earth-shattering. Kept it up for 5 weeks and for the most part (unless I wear a tight-necked turtleneck) the discomfort, lump-in-the throat symptoms are gone!
A relative who suffers from GERD (hers was so bad that she was up-chucking on a regular basis and dropping TUMS like there was no tomorrow) has switched through a bunch of medications with varying results. When I suggested that she try the ginger juice, she wasn't interested. Unless it comes from a pharmacy, she won't try it. Huh??? Some folks are amazing.
Thank you for the sound advice to quiet a REALLY annoying problem, the the book made for interesting reading!
Regards,
Pat

I had a scope of my right knee in the last two days. My doctor says these suppliments are the "Snake OiL" of the 90's. They have no good scientific data to back up their claims, but refer mostly to testimonials from users. Is there some substanial study that has been done that I can pass on to him? He has read the Arthritis Cure book and is not impressed. But, I will buy a copy and read it for myself. My doctor is a friend who has an open mind, but needs to have some scientific data to back up the claims made about Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate. His primary concern is that after the suppliments digestion by the human body, what amount of the suppliment or what compound actually reaches the Arthritis effected area. Would you be willing to shed some light on the subject. I am 52, very active in the outdoors, have a job that requires heavy lifing on occasion, and have a 15 year old that needs help with his "jump shot" . I am not interested in a joint replacement in my situation.

Glucosamine sulfate might help. I have yet to see ANY research indicating that chondroitin can be effective orally.
However, as I have said many times, the solution to a chronic problem like that is never going to be something you take but something you do.
If you are ready to put some effort into actually resolving the problem, I would suggest first reading a copy of my book (link below). Then we could discuss it further, here on the BB, at a more productive level.

Your doc should be paying you rather than the other way around. It is very likely that you know more about how to help yourself than he does.
He is not going to be "impressed" with anything not directly under the control of the licensed physician.
It is time for you to start doing your own thinking.

Dear Angela and Shawnee,
I am a great dog lover. too. I just lost my 14 year old Airdale I had since she was a puppy.
I had an interesting experience with her when she was about 7 years old. She had stopped using her left rear leg. I tried everything I could think of & finally took her to the vet who found arthritis. He suggested cortisone and NSAIDS but could give no assurance that the remedies would not be worse than the disease. In the meantime, her leg atrophied due to disuse.
While treating a holistic veterinarian's mother in my center, I was commisurating about this & he said: "You have done so much for my mother that I would be willing to come out to your home & give your Shakti a free electroacupuncture treatment which frequently will resolve this kind of localized arthritis. I will do it free."
Well, I knew already enough about acupuncture to see a wonderful opportunity when it was offered so I agreed.
He came out to my home & inserted about 10 tiny needles, attached them to electrode s & turned on his machine. I could see the muscles quiver with the current but it didn't seem to bother her at all. Aa a matter of fact she lay down & went to sleep. The vet said that the treatment was so relaxing that they often did so.
When he was done (about 4 hours) he took out the needles & said to me: "Now, don't worry if she gets worse for a few days. That frequently happens. She should be at least as good in 2 weeks as she was yesterday & be normal within a few more weeks. If she does not follow about that prediction, call me & I will come out & do it again."
Well, everything worked exactly as he said. Within about 2 weeks she was using the leg (for the first time in nearly 6 months) and all the muscle mass came back within a few months after that. She never had a bit of trouble after that. She had to be put down on her 14th birthday because of kidney failure. There was no evidence of arthritis at her death.
As you can see from the note at the top of the page, I am not at my desk so I can't give you the national numbers to find certified acupuncturists near to you. If you are interested, write again when I get back.
Let us know how Shawnee does.
Some other suggestions are glucosamine sulfate and essential oils (flaxseed is one of the best).
Give Shawnee a hug for me. Aren't dogs wonderful?

Hi,
Did you ever receive a reply to your query about glucosamine side effects, diabetes, etc?
My wide if a liver transplant recipient, incurred severe osteoarthritis as a result of taking predisone, began taking glucosamine and over time it has helped enormously.
However, her liver enzymes have recently begun to climb (ALT and AST, all others are normal), and ther transplant team opted for a biopsy which showed a slight fatty buildup. We have been searching for why, and wondered if glucosamine may have contributed to this.
Thoughts if you have received any feedback on your end?
