Good news, and a question about dry eyes

Posted by Sherrie on April 12, 2002 at 04:14:36:

After only a few weeks of following Dr. Stoll's book's advice on Grave's disease as well as I can, I am showing real progress in my health. For the past day or two, I noticed myself feeling calm, for periods of about an hour or two. Today, during one of these periods, I took my pulse. It was 82bpm! At other times it was 96bpm and 98bpm. This is an awesome result! Little by little, I am getting better.
I have a question about my eyes. My husband woke me up about a week ago, to tell me that I sleep with my eyes somewhat open. I'm sure that this is contributing heavily to my eyes being dry and swollen when I wake up in the morning. Any suggestions on what I might do to keep my eyes moist during the night? I have tried artificial tears before bed, a washcloth dipped in distilled water over my eyes and a sleeping mask. Nothing has worked that well. Thanks guys. Hugs, Sherrie

Hi Sherrie,

IF it's a result of dehydration, then drinking lots of water should help within a few weeks.

Just a thought! By the way - CONGRATS to you on your path to wellness!!!!!! Keep up the great work.

Sharon

Sharon, You can buy an ointment to apply to your eyes before you go to sleep. It consists of mostly petrolatum jelly, I think. This provides a protective film on your eyeballs to protect them from drying out.

You can find this in the drugstore with the eye products and the artificial tears. Opthalmic products are specially made to be sterile so that you won't get an eye infection.

I have tried this product, and it causes your vision to be blurred. You only need a little bit.

Congratulations, Sherrie!

And you have only begun reaping the benefits of wellness!

Since Carol B. & Sharon R. have already solved your eyelid problem I can tell you that your docs should have already told you this since this is an almost universal problem with Grave's, The eyelid does not grow to cover the bulging eyeball. It takes a conscious blink to wet the entire eyeball and nighttime ointment is needed to save the person's sight.

Let us know how you do. Remember, until this is resolved you will still, likely, experience remissions and exacerbations as you go. It is just that your remissions will be more profound and last longer, while the exacerbations will be further apart, not so severe and last shorter and shorter times. A diary would help you see your progress.

Namaste`

Walt

Thanks Doc! Well, I'm not too suprized I didn't hear about this. I was only told that I would need eye surgery, after my thyroid was removed. Oh well.
Good idea about the diary. Thanks for everything.

Thanks Carol, I bought some yesterday and used it last night. It seemed to make my eyes more comfortable, although I think it will take a few days to really feel a difference. Thank you for your advice.

Thanks! I will increase my water. I haven't been keeping track of how much I drink, so I'm starting that too. Thank you.
