Dear Dr Stoll,
My wife has had treatment for hyperthyroidism for the past 5 years, including radioidine. The condition seems to have stabilised, and is kept under control by taking one pill per day.
She still has the regular symptoms of fast heartbeat, trembling, hot/cold flushes, falling hair, big eyes, etc.. However I have also noted that her moods change from one extreme to another; from quiet to angry, has fixed point of view without regard to another persons views or feelings. Does not discuss matters which effect the whole family. Makes decisions and acts without regard to the consequences.
What I wish to ask about are two things:
1. Does this condition affect the brain, in the way we communicate. Is it likely that some function of the brain has been damaged or lost.
2. What effects on the body does this condition manifest itself as my wife gets older (she is now aged 37), both psychological and physically. For example, is she likely to become paralised, loose control of her trembling, suffer heart attack, become unable to speak socially, become a recluse and stay in one room, or even die at an early age.
I would be pleased if you could predict the future based on your experiences of patients with the same condition.
Regards
Worried husband and father

Dear Worried,
I have Grave's disease. I am fifty two years old, and have been sick for several years. When I first was diagnosed, my hands were so shakey I couldn't sign my name, and my knees were so weak I feared falling when I stood over a few seconds. My heartrate was anywhere from 130bpm to 160bpm. I had not had a pulse under 100bpm for over six years! I couldn't sleep, I yelled at my family and cryed for no reason. I had buldging eyes that burned and had shooting pains without warning. I would sweat any time the room was over sixty degrees, and that was terribly embarrasing. I was told by my doctor that if I didn't use radioactive iodine to kill my thyroid, I would need eye surgery, develop osteoporosis, and die from heart failure.
I have been using the methods outlined in Dr. Stoll's book for only a couple of months. I have made amazing strides, including no longer having palipitations or hair loss, no longer having mood swings, my heartbeat has dipped to under 100bmp most of the time, and my trembling is very slight. My eyes are still buldging but less so, and the shooting pains have vanished.
Please understand what I am saying to you. Your wife is NOT STABILIZED, and does NOT HAVE THE DISEASE UNDER CONTROL. She is sick and getting sicker, and yes her emotions are effected. Stop, please, STOP BELIVING WHAT HER DOCTORS ARE TELLING HER. Get Dr. Stoll's book and read it, then start on the road to wellness. Read all the archives on Grave's disease, and encourage your wife to do the same. I know now that this disease is 100% reversible, when the REAL causes are addressed. There is no reason to accept a bleak and painfull future!

Thanks, Sherrie & CONGRATULATIONS!
It has been a lot of work but it has already been worth it, no?
While worried is waiting to read the book (Available through any lending library if no desire to purchase a copy.) he should go the the archives about Grave's.
In the end it is the person WITH the problem who must do the learning and the doing.
Since Grave's is different with every person, you must ask your specific questions of the doc who has made the diagnosis & is prescribing the treatment!
Let us know what you learn.
Walt
