I had my thyroid partial removed when I was 21 years old. When I was 28 years old, hyerthyroidism returned and I was treated with radiation. I have taken synthroid since I was 28 years old. I am now 59, and synthroid no longer seems to be doing it's job. Is there any other drug that can be used in its place? Is there a department of endocrinology that excells treating problems such as mine anywhere in the northeast.

Hi, Connie.
Your life and medical history are more proof of what I have been saying here: surgery and radiation destruction of the thyroid has nothing to DO with WHY this is happening. It is only putting black tape over the warning light for a while.
It is not too late to DO something about your causes: Devour the archives about thyroid and about Grave's. Now that you have had your thyroid destroyed, you may always have to take something like Armour Thyriod. Your present symptoms are breaking through from your hypothyroid and have nothing to DO with your absent thyroid or the effectiveness of your synthroid.
Let us know what you learn.

Walt, when I read about cases like that, it sure gets me bummed. How do you keep from being bummed out?
