I am a 35 year old male who has never been sick before in my life. I have always been very active and a hard worker. Late in the year of 2001 I started experiencing some very strange symptoms, shaking, tiredness, heart palpatations, dry itchy skin, dry sandy eyes, etc,. I went to dermotologist, eye doctors, and general pract. before I was finaly diagnosed with Graves Disease. Once we knew what the problem was the research began. I did a great deal of research on RAI, Medication or Surgery. I fortunately chose the surgical route and I feel that this has made all the differance. My advice to anyone with this menacing disease is to seek out a good Endocrynologist and Surgeon get your self leveled out and then have the WHOLE Thyroid Gland removed. Once this is done go on the medication (Synthroid) and get on with your life. The only problem I am having now is my eyes are still dry and sandy. This problem is the one that I am researching now

Glad that solved all your problems. Personally, given the enormous importance of the thyroid gland in regulation of metabolic levels, and other, more subtle processes in the body, I would put surgery as my very last option. Docs keep thinking they know more than Mother Nature, and the patient ends up suffering. And what if the economy went down the tubes and Synthroid or some of the better alternatives became unavailable or prohibitively expensive? You would be dead, dead, dead. Now you must rely on the Docs FOREVER. Good luck.

Thanks, Kahle.
I hate to burst your bubble BUT: You know Graves is not a thyroid disease! If you do not know, you should. It is a hypothalamic/pituitary disease and the thyroid is just the tip of the process. Removing the thyroid has done nothing about the actual cause and that cause will come up and bite you on the butt eventually. When you are ready to address the causes, you can go to the Grave's archives and let us know what you learn.
By the way, all the current research says that synthroid is the worst thyroid replacement available. It seems your docs are still at least 10 years behind the times.
Actually, I am amazed that you could have done all the research you say you have done and not come up with some of this stuff before this.

Doc, I hope you are doing well. Both my mom and brother have Graves and I have seen them "improve" but not actually get WELL. There is truth in your words! I have just persuaded mom to switch to natural thyroid. My brother is too stubborn, but time will tell. Take care.

I was diagnosed with i believe hyperthyroidism in 1998 and i was orgionally put on .88mg of "synthroid" and i was on it for a year and a half and i started to feel crappy again and i did some research and found out synthroid was not fda approved as of that time about a year ago so i did research and i got put on .88mg "unithroid" which is fda approved and i have felt a little better..i notice someone mentioned natural thyroid replacement what is that and where do u get it?
My naturopathic doctor mentioned something ahwile back called armour? is that it?
I told my doctor about it and she said she does not reccommend it why is that?

Yes, Chris.
We are talking about the Armour Thyroid.
In my opinion, the main reason your doc doesn't "recommend it" is because it is a lot more work for the doc to manage--she would actually have to think harder. It IS better for the patient but.......
