Need advice on Graves troubles

Hi, Dr. Stoll and everyone on this board, I need your advice since I am not sure what to do at this moment.

I was diagnosis as Graves a month ago, and I had lost 15 pound already, and I was so skinny right now. The doctor said I had very severe graves he never seen, so he wanted to start on me with RAI immediately, of course I refused after reading some info here.

Here is my test results,
Free T4 5.0 (normal: 9.5-1.3)
TSH 0.03 (0.34-4.8)
Tyroid antibody 45.8 (< 0.34)

Iodine uptake:
4h 71% (normal 3-20)
22 hours 92% (normal (10-35)
Scan shows homogeneous uptake.

Are these results suggesting very severe graves? I did not feel so bad, I just had fast heartbeating and muscle weakness.

I immediately try to follow a more healthy diet, and try to do SR (although I am not sure I doing right). I have taken Methiomazone for about three weeks (30 mg a day). I have felt much better (my sleep pulse reduce from 100 to 85, and my muscle weakness is much better). Now I got a serious problem, I developed skin rash (very itching) due to the side effect of the drug. Even if I change another ATD, I may have the same or more side effects. Besides I have heptitis B before, my liver level is already high (FERRITIN 647 (normal 20-350).

I really not sure what to do now besides relax. I don't want to do RAI. But I am worried about the side effects of ATD as well.

Any advice in my situation would be appreciated. Thank you so much

Weijun

Hi, Weijun.

The most important and quickest path to reversing your runaway thyroid is SR. Put all of your effort into learning what works for you and do it at least 3 times a day. See the home page and the glossary about SR to get started the quickest. Be sure to check your technique with biofeedback at the end of 2 weeks to make sure this will work.

Within 2 weeks of achieving the correct technique for you, you will begin to see your symptoms reverse. Within a month you could get your blood tests repeated and then you can watch your doc's face when he sees that they are improving without the RAI. Get the tests repeated in 6 months and they should be normal.

Then the rational response by your doc should be: "How did you do that?" Do not hold your breath for THAT to happen.

When you are normal, you should mark the calendar and 6 months later you could cut your SR to twice a day. If no recurrance of symptoms in a few months you might try cutting to once a day. I would keep that up for the rest of your life.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Hi, Doc,

Thanks so much for you advice. I will try to do it as good as I can. I will let you known. I have still one quick question. I heard people with hyperthyroidism should not be any excercise, is this right?

Thanks
Weijun

Thansk, Weijun.

Mild sustained exercise (walking) is OK and good for this.

Mild rebounding is also helpful and perfectly safe. See the archives.
