Thyroid Problem

Posted by Jean on February 06, 2003 at 21:00:58:

Hi Walt and everyone,
I lost about 10 pounds in about 1 month. My doctor did blood tests and everything came back normal except my TSH level. It was .01 where normal is .4 to 5.5. Now she is going to check my T3 and T4 levels to see what is going on. I've been reading the archives and I plan on getting the book "THe Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook". I have been dealing with anxiety issues for about 3 years, and I'm sure this hasn't helped my thyroid.
About 2 years ago, thru a hair test, I discovered my iodine levels were below normal, but my thyroid was normal. I started taking about 1/4 tsp kelp in my health drink every morning. Actually I started feeling better, less fatigued. My naturapath at the time said that amount was fine. Dr. Stoll what do you think of seaweed supplements? Do you think the kelp was okay for my thyroid? Actually, ironically, I have not been doing the health drink very often lately because I decided to stop using soy milk ( I decided this way before I knew about my thyroid). At this point I am so sensitive, I am concerned about taking anything unusual. DO you think seaweed or iodine is good or bad for hyper-active thyroid?
I'll let you know when my other tests come back.
Thank you so much!

Jean

Hi, Jean.

The seaweed is OK. However, if your doc did not know that you were using it, the test results might have been altered.

IF you are tested, after at least 6 weeks of not using it, the tests might be accurate.

If your tests still are out of whack, remember that all thyroid conditions (except cancer which is too far gone to be cured this way--even though it still will help) can be reversed by SR.

Hi, Deborah.

I use TVP with my cooking and use soy as often as I can work it into my mostly vegetarian diet. I eat eggs and dairy & occasional meat (although I do better without the dairy).

I agree with HY that fermented soy is best but also think that it cannot be blamed for what the environment and the rapidly increasing incidence of LGS is causing (See "The Second Brain" by Gershon.)

Hope this helps.

Walt
