I have an eight year old student that was diagnosed with Graves disease. He received radiation and went from hyper to hypothyroidism. He is taking a synthyroid. What side affects does this type of medication have on an eight year old child. He has just been id. and learning disabled in reading and in math. Symptoms "in class" are sluggish and dazed. I'm wondering if this is caused by the meds. Please inform me of the things I can do and what I can advise the Parents. Thanks, Mrs. Smith from Seven Springs, NC

Hi, Theresa.
All of the recent articles about thyroid replacement says that Synthroid is the worst choice for ANYONE to be taking. In my opinion, his doc is not up on the literature.
Since he was rushed into destroying his gland there are few options left. He will be less functional even with the ideal replacement (Armour) than he was before this. See page 96 in my book. Your library can get you a copy if you do not want to buy one.
